CHAPTER 23
Kripa huffed to Angad's house, no one was home. She threw herself across Angad's bed and inhaled his scent. She needed him right now but she didn't want to face reality. Angad's eyes were the mirror that she saw the world clearly through. She sobbed into the pillow that she wished she could suffocate herself with. She sat up, still sobbing. She stared at the clock, 11:59. Oh great, it'll be the day in 5…4…3…2…1. Happy birthday, Kripa. Happy friggin birthday.
Her phone rang, Angad she thought. She picked the phone up. It was her dad, she picked up.
"Hello?"
"Happy birthday Beta. Many…happy returns of the day."
"It's the anniversary of my being born. That's okay, you can mourn your mistake later on…when I'm dead."
"Kripa, why do you say that? You know your life wasn't a mistake. I love you."
"Sure Papa, whatever. You blew your chance. Growing up, you were the one to tell us. Remember that poem you used to read us? It was about fallen angels. It went:
Cast out by their single choice,
Their mouths are silent; they have a voice,
Unrecognized by quick glances,
There are no such things as second chances.
Remember that Papa?"
He was silent on the other line. She wondered if he had hung up.
"Well Papa, before you can do it…I'm disowning you. Don't feel bad, even though I know you won't. I just wanted to tell you Maa taught me well not to be a hypocrite. If I don't get a second chance, neither do you."
"Beta, I just wanted to…" Wanted to what? Kripa hung up. The phone had rung again, somewhere she wished it was her father again. Asking for a second chance, just once had he asked…she would have gave it to him. A chance to be a good father, a chance to know Kripa like her mother had…But it was too late. It was Angad on the phone now.
"So birthday girl, how does it feel to be OLD?" He laughed, he recognized her tense silence, "What happened Kripa?"
"Nothing. I just hate the sound of being…OLD." She laughed mockingly.
"Kripa…"
"Yeah?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yuppers." She said overly-excited. He didn't believe her but knew it was probably not wanted to be talked about. He let the topic of conversation die.
"I love you." He said, sighing.
"I love you too." She said, falling back onto his bed. She inhaled his scent again. It was better than any drug.
"Was I first?" He asked excitedly. Kripa paused.
"You're always first, Angad." She said.
