Yo Yo Honey Singh questions double standards in music, calls out Gulzar's lyrics for Misogyny

Yo Yo Honey Singh has been a major force in Punjabi music, taking it to new heights both in India and globally. His bold and often controversial lyrics, however, have attracted criticism, with many accusing him of being disrespectful to women. In a recent interview with the Times of India, Singh addressed these allegations and questioned why he is always the one being blamed when other legendary artists like Gulzar, who have written similar songs, are never called out.

Singh openly shared, "I don’t give a s*** but I think I should answer this." He referred to Gulzar's famous song ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se piya,’ questioning why lyrics like these are never questioned. He asked, "Jigar kahan hota hai aurat ka? ‘Zuban pe laga namak ishq ka,’ why is he talking about the tongue of a woman? Sirf main hi kyun galat hoon? This is misogynistic for me." Singh expressed his frustration, asking why only he is criticized when other similar songs were widely accepted without issue.

He also brought up the famous song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai,” pointing out that even though it was controversial, its creators are still respected as legends. Singh added, "Par Honey Singh ko hi kyun gaali di jaati hai aur unko aap legend bolte ho? Main bhi bolta hoon. Hum dual personalities leke chal rahe hain aaj ke daur mein. Modernise bhi ho rahe hain par backward bhi soch rahe hain." He reflected on how society has double standards, modernizing in some areas while still holding onto outdated thoughts.

Despite facing a break in his career from 2014 to 2021 due to personal challenges, including mental health issues and substance abuse, Singh is now back in the music scene. Although his recent albums haven't been as successful as his earlier hits, he remains a significant figure. Additionally, his upcoming Netflix documentary will explore his journey, offering fans a closer look at both his professional and personal life.
