Wilson at the Academy

Wilson Louis may not be a well-known name in the film industry here, but he has found critical acclaim in the west. His movie, Ho Sakta Hain, based on the paranormal, has been selected for the Academy Awards library. And this makes him a happy man.

So why did it not get the praise it deserved in India? "It was released late, and the publicity was not satisfactory," Wilson says. Of course he was disappointed, but he also realizes that "the absence of masala, songs, and big stars hampered its success." With this movie, he has joined the likes of Shimit Amin and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, whose movies have also made it to the Academy Awards library.

And now he is back with his next film, Ghat. From what he tells us, it is a horror flick, and, even better, a true story. Wilson is from Pune, and frequents Lonavala, which is his favourite hang out place. This time Wilson is going to make sure that he does not repeat his mistakes. He will edit two versions of Ghat – one for the international market, to be distributed some time next week; and another a Hindi version, complete with songs and the desired spice, for the Indian audience. The latter will be released a month after the first version.

Does that mean he will restrict himself to the horror genre? "Not at all," he emphasizes, "I want to be known as a film maker who can make a movie in all genres." His next, after Ghat, is a comedy with Rajpal Yadav, titled Bunty Ka Mamma. He has a commercial film with Gemini Studios, in the pipeline.

Doors that were earlier shut seem to be opening themselves for this contemporary director. Looks like he has a busy schedule ahead.
