A tragic turn of events unfolded outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025, as massive crowds gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic IPL 2025 win. A stampede claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals and left over 30 others injured, according to official reports.
RCB had just ended an 18-year-long wait by clinching their first-ever IPL title, defeating Punjab Kings in a gripping final in Ahmedabad. The win, powered by contributions from veterans like Virat Kohli and young talents such as Rajat Patidar, sparked euphoric celebrations across the city. However, festivities turned grim as overcrowding outside the stadium led to chaos and loss.

Another victim succumbed to injuries at Manipal Hospital. In total, 33 individuals have been reported injured, many of whom are still receiving treatment. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each bereaved family and assured that medical treatment would be provided free of cost to the injured. “Such a tragedy shouldn’t have happened,” he said, after visiting hospitals treating the victims. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry and promised accountability: “Action will be taken if anyone is found wrong.”
In response to the incident, RCB issued a formal statement expressing deep sorrow and concern. “We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival,” the team noted. “The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.”
The statement, shared by Virat Kohli on behalf of the franchise, added that the team had amended its program as soon as the situation became clear and was cooperating with local authorities. “We mourn the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families,” it read.
With a stadium capacity of only 35,000, the gathering of an estimated 2-3 lakh fans overwhelmed all arrangements. Karnataka Governor Thawaar Chand Gehlot has urged a thorough probe into the lapses.
While the city hoped to rejoice in long-awaited victory, it is now grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
