Vicky Kaushal, who played Sardar Udham Singh in the recently released Sardar Udham, has reacted to the film not being sent as India’s official entry for the Oscars. He stated that the jury members made the decision, and that 'we have to respect that decision.'

In an interview, Indraadip Dasgupta, a member of the jury that decided on this year's official Oscar entry, described the film as "lengthy," adding that it "projected our hatred towards the British."

Vishal has now told Mid-Day, "Everyone has the right to their opinion. We have a jury made up of film experts. They made a decision, and we must respect that decision. I haven't seen the Tamil film, but Shoojit Da (Sircar) has and is very enthusiastic about it. I am confident that putting Indian cinema on a global stage was the best decision made. We should now root for the chosen film and hope that it brings us glory."

"Sardar Udham is a little lengthy and harps on the Jallianwala Bagh incident,” Indraadip previously told a leading daily. “It's a sincere attempt to make a lavish film about an unsung hero of India's freedom struggle. But, in the process, it re-projects our hostility toward the British. It is not fair to hold on to this hatred in this day and age of globalisation."

"Many have loved Sardar Udham for its cinematic quality, including camerawork, editing, sound design, and depiction of the period," said another jury member, Sumit Basu. I thought the film's length was an issue. It has a climax that is delayed. It takes a long time for a viewer to feel genuine sympathy for the Jallianwala Bagh martyrs."

In response to the decision, Shoojit Sircar was quoted by News18 as saying, "It is a personal opinion, it is very subjective, I have no comment on that." I have faith in the jury and their decision. I am aware of the film that was eventually chosen, and I am pleased that it was chosen. I follow the verdict of the jury."

The Tamil film Koozhangal, directed by debutant PS Vinothraj, has been selected as India's official entry for the Oscars in 2022. Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan co-produced the film. The film follows the journey of an alcoholic father and his son on their way to reclaim their estranged wife-mother. Karuththadaiyaan and Chellapandi play the lead characters.

Vicky Kaushal had previously congratulated Nayanthara and Vignesh on Instagram, writing, "Congratulations Vignesh Sivan, Nayanthara, and Team #Koozhangal! "Go for the gold!!!"

Sardar Udham, Vidya Balan's Sherni, Yogi Babu's Tamil film Mandela, and Martin Prakkat's Malayalam film Nayattu were also nominated for India's official Oscar entry.
