The Bollywood industry has long been criticized for perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards, often promoting a narrow and unattainable definition of beauty. The emphasis on flawless skin, perfect features, and lean physiques can create unrealistic expectations and contribute to the prevalence of beauty-related issues. Bollywood diva Vaani Kapoor too faced intense scrutiny early in her career, with her appearance being under constant spotlight. Hailing from New Delhi, Vaani took a bold step by relocating to Mumbai to pursue her dreams in the film industry.
Vaani Kapoor shares a personal account of facing skin color bias in the film industry. "I haven't been told directly, but information reaches via other people. A filmmaker had once said that I wasn't fair enough to land a role. He said that I wasn't 'milky white'," she reveals while talking to News18 Showsha.
She added further, “I told myself that it is what it is. If that’s a requirement, I don’t want to be a part of his projects. The feelings are completely mutual there. He can find his milky white beauty or his fair and lovely woman. I know that I can find a better filmmaker for myself. This happened ages ago. And that filmmaker wasn’t from Mumbai."
Vaani mentioned that although she has handled past criticisms with poise, she still occasionally faces body-shaming comments. She added that people often tell her she's too skinny and should gain weight, as some prefer women with fuller figures. However, Vaani expressed her self-acceptance, stating that she likes herself just the way she is and doesn't feel the need to change. She emphasized her focus on being fit and healthy, rather than conforming to others' opinions.
Vaani Kapoor's career is thriving with projects like Mandala Murders on Netflix, where she plays a strong-willed investigating officer. Other films include Badtameez Gill and Raid 2. Known for her roles in War and Shuddh Desi Romance, Vaani continues to showcase her versatility as a talented actress.
