The Trunk Review: Gong Yoo, Seo Hyun-Jin meet in an unexpected manner in the Netflix show around secret contract marriages

The Trunk is the big Korean show of the week to come on Netflix. The show is about a secret marriage service that aims to help people solve relationship issues through temporary contract marriages. The show is based on the novel by Kim Ryeo-ryeong. It is directed by Kim Kyu-tae who helmed the show Our Blues for Netflix. The Trunk is a dark brooding angsty thriller with an element of mystery.
What is it about…?
We are introduced to Han Jeong-won, a music producer played by Gong Yoo. He is super rich, a talented music producer but dealing with painful traumas from his past that have led to insomnia. He takes pills and is just escaping from being put in jail. His architect wife Lee Seo-yeon (actress Jung Yun-Ha) has left him to be married to a much younger man for a year. She has full intentions to reunite with her husband Han Jeong-won after a year. Seo-yeon gets Jeong-won married to In-Ji (Seo Hyun-Jin) a woman who works in the corporation of temporary marriages that aim to solve relationship issues. In the middle of all this, the cops find a trunk that has some sinister secrets.

Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-Jin have that intense unspoken chemistry needed for a show like this. The back story of the two characters have an element of mystery, which keeps you hooked. Gong Yoo is in fine form as the reckless but enigmatic Han Jeong-won. He brings on the character’s desperation, angst and cocky attitude on screen with panache. Seo Hyun-Jin’s eyes speak volumes in every frame. She is proving why she’s one of the best in the first two episodes itself. The Trunk is also shot in a beautiful manner. The sprawling mansion in muted colours is the perfect setting for the two characters who are stifled tormented souls.
