'The Empire' compared to 'Game of Thrones'; director Mitakshara opens up on it

Disney+ Hotstar is all set and rolling to be presenting what is touted to be the biggest show to be coming out of Indian space in the form of The Empire. The show that has an alluring ensemble cast with TV actor Drashti Dhami also making her web debut. However, apart from all these factors, there was one thing that was instantly talked about when the trailer of the show was out.

Having had a look at the trailer, the fans would immediately start talking about how there is an apparent and obvious inspiration from the mega show Game of Thrones. Be it the giant scale at which The Empire is being shot or be it the kind of look Dino Morea's character of Shaybani Khan has, it was all being conversed and many seemed to be thinking that the show has indeed taken a lot from Thrones.

To be honest, I had never seen Game of Thrones. I only saw it recently, like a couple of months ago

So, Mitakshara Kumar, who has directed and helmed the show was asked about the same. In an exclusive conversation with India Forums, Kumar was asked about this, to which she said, "To be honest, I had never seen Game of Thrones. I only saw it recently, like a couple of months ago. When we shot and made The Empire, I had no idea what Game of Thrones looked like or was about. So, I have no idea where did the comparison come from."

She added, "I was actually told by everyone to watch the show for the longest time. People made me do it. Now that I saw the show, I actually didn't understand where did the comparison come from. Game of Thrones was more about fantasy drama while The Empire is a part of our history. But considering how huge GOT was, so if people are comparing the same to The Empire, I take it as a compliment."
