More than two decades after Mohra hit theatres, Suniel Shetty has finally addressed an old remark made by Anil Kapoor about the film’s lead pairing. At the time of Mohra’s poster release, Kapoor allegedly referred to Shetty and Akshay Kumar as “50% waale heroes” — a comment that has resurfaced in a recent interview.
Speaking to Radio Nasha, Suniel confirmed the comment was indeed made. “Yes, there was this type of dialogue—I had saw it in the newspaper too,” he said. Reflecting on the context, he added, “Lekin voh star the toh bol sakte the.” According to Shetty, the remark stemmed from the idea that a solo hero should have headlined the film instead of a two-hero format.
He didn’t deny that the comment stung. “Toh bura toh lagta hi hai,” Suniel admitted, though he balanced the sentiment with a sense of acceptance. “Lekin kahin na kahin hume bhi pata tha ki hum voh stars bane nahi hai unke jitne bade nahi hai.” He acknowledged that Kapoor was a much bigger star at the time, and that such remarks were part and parcel of the industry, especially in the media-driven film culture of the '90s.
Suniel also noted that youthful egos often led to such statements. “Jawani mein hum sab ne kahin na kahin dialogue mara hai and media ko maza aata tha usse pick karne mein.” Still, he was clear that there was no lasting grudge. “He is someone whom I have always admired… a very good human being once you get to know him.”
Released in 1994, Mohra became a commercial success and a turning point for Shetty. The film featured a large ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Naseeruddin Shah, and Paresh Rawal. It marked one of the earliest team-ups between Akshay and Suniel, who went on to collaborate on multiple hits.
Looking ahead, Suniel Shetty will be seen in Kesari Veer, releasing on 23 May, followed by Hera Pheri 3 and Welcome to the Jungle. Despite past jibes, his career has found steady ground—just as he once hoped it would.
