Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya Claims Rival Stars Mocked Shah Rukh Khan as ‘Hakla’ Behind His Back

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, known for delivering several chart-topping tracks in Shah Rukh Khan's films, recently made headlines with his remarks during a podcast conversation on Subhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. The singer opened up about his professional relationship with the Bollywood superstar, his selective approach to playback singing in the 90s, and a shocking incident involving Shah Rukh’s contemporaries.

Abhijeet’s Allegations Against Rival Stars

Abhijeet claimed that during his career peak, he chose to focus exclusively on singing for Shah Rukh Khan’s films. “I had become choosy, and I became a little too mindful on this and decided that I will not sing for anyone else but Shah Rukh,” he said. However, this decision allegedly drew flak from rival actors, some of whom mocked the actor.

“That became a problem, because many of his contemporaries called him ‘hakla’ (stammerer),” Abhijeet revealed. He recalled an incident at an award ceremony in Dubai, where he had won an award for the song Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha from Main Hoon Na.

“When I was getting down from the stage, there was one star who came forward and said, ‘Aye! hakle ke liye gaa raha hai na tu (You are singing for that stammerer)?’” Abhijeet shared. He added, “Two people said this together. I was shocked! I was like why are they feeling jealous? I got the award for my singing.”

Moving Away From Playback Singing

Following the incident, Abhijeet admitted he lost interest in playback singing and began focusing on his live shows and concerts. “After that experience, I kept losing interest in playback singing and started focusing on my shows and concerts. Even today, I am very happy doing that,” he said.

Abhijeet’s illustrious career includes several hits for Shah Rukh Khan, such as Tauba Tumhare Ishare from Chalte Chalte, Chaand Taare from Yes Boss, and Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Mein from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Despite moving away from playback singing, the singer remains a celebrated figure in Bollywood music.
