Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who sadly left us at 90 on December 23, will be laid to rest on December 24 at the Dadar funeral at 2 PM. Friends, family, and colleagues will come together to pay tribute to the legacy of this true trailblazer of Indian cinema at the Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai.

Shyam Benegal, known as the father of India's Parallel Cinema Movement created impactful movies in the 1970s and 1980s that resonated with audiences for their realistic and socially relevant themes. Some of his notable works include Manthan, Bhumika, and Junoon.

He breathed his last at 6.30 pm in Mumbai's Wokhardt Hospital, as confirmed by his daughter Pia Benegal. Born into a Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family in Secunderabad, Shyam Benegal received the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his remarkable contributions to the arts.

He was also the cousin of the legendary Bollywood filmmaker Guru Dutt. Naseeruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Divya Dutta, and Shabana Azmi, among others, had gathered to celebrate his birthday on December 14. A graduate of Osmania University, he founded the Hyderabad Film Society and commenced his career in 1959 at Lintas Advertising in Mumbai as a copywriter. Over his career, he crafted over 70 documentary films and served as a professor at FTII in Pune.
