Shakuntala - First Week Review!

Shakuntala, an ageless love story of Kalidasa is the first mythological show of Star One. Let's see how it fared in its first week...

Shakuntala, another mythological drama from Sagar Productions on Star One. Riding on the success of their previous periodic and mythological shows, Sagar Productions have tried their hands at the ageless Love story of King Dushyant and Shankuntala, daughter of Saint Vishwamitra and Celestial Apsara Menka. The show is based on Abhignana Shakuntala, Kalidasa's greatest Creations. Let's see how it fared in its first week and what promise it holds for future…
Story Adaptation: Shakuntala was the daughter of Vishwamitra and Menka. The story is of King Dushyanta, who was the founder of the Paurav Dynasty, and Shankuntala and how they meet in the forest and fall in love with each other. However, soon after their marriage, Dushyanta goes back to his kingdom as he has forgotten all about his wife due to the curse of Saint Durvasa, which happened when Shakuntala was dreaming of her husband. One day, Saint Durvasa made it to the ashram, but Shakuntala lost in her thoughts about Dushyanta, fails to greet him properly. Incensed by this, the Saint curses Shakuntala, saying that the person she was dreaming of, would forget about her altogether. But due to a royal ring given by King Dushyant to Shankuntala, she helps him remember their love story even after many years.
Actors: The first week went in showing the birth of Shakuntala and how Saint Karnav saves her from Shatanand. Saint Shatanand is doing his job fantabulously well, his expressions, every dialogue is worth an applause. So is Saint Karnav who after a weekly show on Star Plus Lucky makes a comeback to small screen with a bang, and what's more, he is tailor-made for the role. Every actor is doing their bit giving the story a pretty picture. Child Shakuntala looks sweet and acts well too. Viewers are now awaiting Neha Mehta and Gautam Sharma to arrive on the scene.

Set and ambiance:  If we leave out the spoon and dish shown while feeding milk to baby Shakuntala, rest of the sets looked fake and not even close to that era. They are beautiful to watch, but gives you the feeling of a fairy tale rather than Kalidasa's divine love tale. Shakuntala is a story which existed before Mahabharata times, but in clothes they looked inspired from Buddhist monks. The most hilarious part was when they showed Saint Shatanand packing his belongings while leaving the ashram on the orders of Saint Karnav. He also packs his book, but in those times manuscripts used to exist and were written on tree's bark, not on paper. Paper was discovered by Chinese people, many centuries later and not by Saint Karnav or Shatanand.

On the whole, Shankuntala's success will depend hugely on the actors and how they will carry forward this tale of love. They are lagging behind in set and ambiance department as of now, and there will be a ray of hope if they pay attention to this! So watch Shakuntala as an ageless and timeless love story and forget which era it actually belonged to!
