Review: 'Selection Day 2' gets a LOT better from the first installment; there is a BUT though!

But it still doesn't entirely grasp your attention...

The second part, well not exactly the second part but the continuation of Netflix's Selection Day was released a couple of days ago and after six episodes in the first part the second installment of the next six episodes were released. Unable to find its stride in the first quarter, the show's return has several things to look forward to this time.

The Highs

The biggest high that the show has his time is the fact that there is a genuine story arc that gets better. After a rather bland and single-layered plot in the first installment, the plot explores even better this time around. The characters finally have something substantial for the viewers to actually be invested in.

The pace of the show is not only better this time but keeps you glued not willing to switch the show off. The first installment took a while to have fans get actually have an interest but that wasn't the case this time around. With the speed of the show and the movement of the storyline getting better, the show only goes uphill.

The whole revelation of Javed and Manju's friendship-cum-love affair takes the case in terms of being a major reveal. Not many would have anticipated a storyline about same sex affection
coming in the show.

The little moments matter. The very small scene between Ratna Pathak Shah's Principal Weinberg and the actress who plays Mahesh Manjerekar's wife was absolutely fabulous. The banter between them wasn't just funny but really deep in its own manner when the latter reveals that she doesn't have much time left to live. It is scenes like these that make a show what they are.

The Lows

Even though the storyline has gotten better, the show still lacks that X-factor that any presentation needs. Even with its moments and twists and turns, the story doesn't elevate enough to make it an instant and most-recommended watch for the viewers.

While Rajesh Tailang's character is truly fabulous as the cunning, unforgiving father of the two cricket prodigies but it becomes so one-toned over the spread of over eight episodes. His ruthlessness doesn't stay as menacing as it was in the first few episodes. Does that change in the last chunk of episodes? Maybe.

The Verdict

The lows are such that cannot go unnoticed but one thing is certain and that is how Selection Day indeed picks pace and gets better then the first installment. So, if you are one of those viewers who saw the whole first six episodes or a couple of 'em initially and thought that it is no more worth it to see the rest of the episodes anymore, I assure you, that isn't the case.
