The name of the film comes from the name of the nightclub 'Bombay Velvet' in the film. Ranbir Kappor is the manager of Bombay Velvet and Anushka Sharma is a jazz singer there. The film revolves around the nightclub, where a lot of important events take place.

Anurag Kashyap has recreated Bombay of the 60's and has made sure that everything is in sync with that era.
