Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa's highly anticipated film, "Phule," has faced a setback with its release being postponed by two weeks, now slated for April 25, 2025. The delay stems from multiple controversies surrounding the film, primarily centered around allegations of promoting casteism.
The Brahmin community, through its federation president Anand Dave, has expressed strong disapproval of the film, claiming it perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Dave, after viewing the trailer, demanded recognition of the "black Brahmin" community's contribution in supporting the Phules.
In response to the controversy, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has mandated significant edits to the film before its release. These edits include the removal of a voiceover referencing the caste system, the exclusion of terms like "Mahar," "Mang," "Peshwai," and the "Manus system of caste," and the alteration of certain dialogues to ensure appropriateness for the audience.
Former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal has engaged with director Ananth Mahadevan and producers to address the controversy, but the film's release remains shrouded in uncertainty as the makers navigate these sensitive issues.
Despite receiving a U certificate from the censor board, "Phule" has faced scrutiny from organizations like the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj and Parshuram Aarthik Vikas Mahamandal. Director Ananth Mahadevan has engaged with representatives of the Brahmin community, highlighting the historical support certain Brahmins provided to Jyotirao Phule's endeavors, including the establishment of 20 schools and the Satyashodhak Samaj. He insists that the film is not driven by any agenda and solely presents factual information, supported by documentary evidence. The film's makers have submitted relevant documentation to address the concerns raised.
"Phule," a biographical film directed by Ananth Mahadevan, tells the inspiring story of social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. Pratik Gandhi portrays Jyotirao Phule, also known as Mahatma Phule, while Patralekhaa embodies the role of his wife, Savitribai. The film delves into their tireless efforts to champion equality and advocate for education as an inherent right for all.
