Known for her iconic role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the 2017 film Raees, Mahira's recent interview sheds light on her personal struggles.

In a heartfelt conversation on the FWhy podcast, Mahira revealed her journey through the labyrinth of mental illness. She opened up about her ongoing battle with bipolar disorder, a condition that has silently accompanied her for the past six to seven years. 

The turning point arrived after the 2016 Uri attack, which led to a ban on Pakistani artists working in India. Mahira expressed how this tumultuous time had a profound impact on her mental well-being. The abrupt halt in her cross-border career left her grappling with emotions beyond her control. 

The aftermath of starring in Raees, coupled with the ensuing backlash, acted as a catalyst for her struggles. Recalling the moment that changed everything, she shared, "I ended up in a psychiatrist's office, and she said, 'We'll talk about everything later, but I need you to know that you have manic depression.'"

She admitted to attempting to discontinue her medication for a brief period last year, only to find herself sinking into an abyss of darkness. As Mahira shared her journey, she stressed the significance of clinical depression as a genuine condition, not just a fleeting emotion.
