Laxman Utekar Issues Apology

Vicky Kaushal’s film 'Chhaava,' which honors the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has resonated with audiences across the country and is performing exceptionally well at the box office. However, it has recently ignited controversy. The descendants of Maratha warriors Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke have raised objections, claiming that the film misrepresents their ancestors. They have threatened to file a defamation lawsuit for Rs 100 crore.

In light of this, director Laxman Utekar has publicly apologized. A pivotal scene in 'Chhaava' depicts Ganoji and Kanhoji, trusted allies of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, betraying him by aligning with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, which ultimately leads to the Maratha ruler’s demise. This portrayal has upset the warriors’ descendants, who feel it unjustly tarnishes their legacy.

Following the film's release, Laxmikant Raje Shirke, the 13th descendant of Ganoji and Kanhoji, criticized the filmmakers for what he described as a clear “misinterpretation of historical facts.” He expressed his disappointment, asserting that the portrayal damages his family's legacy. The Shirke family formally sent a notice to Laxman Utekar on February 20, requesting clarification on the film’s depiction of their ancestors and urging him to make the necessary corrections.

According to recent reports, Laxman Utekar took the initiative to personally contact Bhushan Shirke, one of the descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji, to express his apologies for any unintended distress caused to the family. He also clarified that the film does not specifically mention the last names or the village names associated with Ganoji and Kanhoji.

We have only mentioned the names of Ganoji and Kanhoji in Chhaava, without referring to their surname. We’ve also made sure to not disclose the village they belonged to. Our intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the Shirke family. I sincerely apologise if Chhaava caused any discomfort

- Director

The Shirke family has made it clear that if their concerns are not addressed and their demands remain unmet, they will escalate the matter with statewide protests.
