Kamal Haasan's comments spark controversy; Kannadigas demand ban on film, 'Thug Life'

Actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has come under fire for a comment made during a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai. Speaking at the event, Haasan referred to Kannada as a language that “originated from Tamil,” a statement that sparked criticism across Karnataka and led to protests by pro-Kannada organisations.

While addressing the audience, Haasan opened his remarks by declaring Tamil as central to his identity. He then made a reference to Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, calling him “family from another state,” and linked this sentiment to his belief that Kannada has linguistic roots in Tamil. Shivarajkumar was present at the event, which was held to promote the Mani Ratnam directorial venture.

The statement triggered a strong reaction from several Kannada groups, including the Kannada Rakshana Vedike, who accused Haasan of undermining the history and status of the Kannada language. The group also warned of escalated protests if the actor continued making such statements.

In Bengaluru, activists tore down Thug Life promotional material and staged demonstrations, accusing Haasan of disrespecting the local language and culture. According to some protesters, the actor was expected to attend a promotional appearance in the city, but changed his plans after learning about the planned protest, which included an attempt to throw black ink at him.

Praveen Shetty, a prominent voice from Kannada Rakshana Vedike, criticised Haasan for what he described as an “insult” to Kannada, warning of possible consequences, including a call for a ban on the upcoming film in the state.

Political voices have also entered the conversation. BY Vijayendra, the BJP’s Karnataka unit president, denounced Haasan’s comment online, calling it a slight against Kannada’s long-standing literary tradition. He demanded an apology and questioned the actor’s continued business interests in Karnataka given the backlash.

The controversy has now shifted beyond cinema, raising larger questions about language politics and cultural sensitivities between neighbouring states. As of now, there has been no official statement from Haasan responding to the criticism.
