Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has found himself at the center of controversy after a video of him drinking water during India’s semi-final match against Australia went viral. The debate has divided opinions, with some religious clerics criticizing him for not observing a fast during the holy month of Ramzan, while others believe professional commitments allow exceptions.
Amid this uproar, veteran lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar came forward to support Shami. Taking to social media, he wrote, "Shami saheb, don’t give a damn to those reactionary bigoted idiots who have any problem with your drinking water in a burning afternoon at a cricket field in Dubai. It is none of their business. You are one of the great Indian team that is making us all proud. My best wishes to you and our whole team."
Shami’s actions sparked criticism from Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat. He claimed that according to Islamic law, fasting is an obligation, and skipping it without valid reason is a sin. "In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal, he should not have done this at all," he remarked. He further advised Shami to follow religious practices diligently, emphasizing that it is the duty of every Muslim to respect and adhere to the rules of Shariat.
However, many people, including Shami’s fans and supporters, argue that athletes have physical demands that may not allow them to fast during tournaments. Islamic teachings also provide exemptions for those engaged in strenuous activities.
Shami is currently in Dubai as part of the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Despite the controversy, he continues to focus on his game, with many standing by him, insisting that religious choices are personal and should not overshadow his contributions to Indian cricket.
