I was crying out of anger: Nisha Nagpal of ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ on exposing Parth as a woman beater

Star Plus show ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ has kept the fans glued to the TV screens. The current tracks of the show revolve around Abhimanyu learning about Parth beating Shefali and that she is physically abused several times. He tries to expose Parth but Shefali doesn’t let the truth come out for the sake of her son. However, Abhimanyu motivates her and tells her that she needs to put across a better example for her son Shivu so that he grows up to respect women.

Shefali gives it a thought and plans to expose Parth. In the upcoming episodes, Shefali will be seen narrating her ordeal to Birla family members. India Forums got in touch with actress Nisha Nagpal who essays the character of Shefali in the show and asked her about her experience shooting for the scene wherein she finally reveals that she has been a victim of domestic violence. She said, “Experience of shooting the exposing Parth scene was unreal. I got so involved in the scene that I was crying out of anger. One can never feel or imagine the pain that a domestic violence victim goes through. It was a heart-wrenching situation for Shefali but was a very performance-oriented scene for Nisha as an actress.”

When I got to know about the track, I was very excited but also, nervous at the same time. It is a performance-based track on such a sensitive issue. I was a little worried if I’d be able to do justice to the track or not. I’m sure more people will be able to connect with me post the track.

When asked if the sequence affected her personally, “Honestly, as an actor, I can’t let what happens in the reel life to affect my real life. I have to perform many shades of a character and I can’t let it affect my personal space. But, yes, after playing a domestic violence victim, I have realized how strong a woman can actually be if she decides to take a stand for herself.”

Sharing a message for all such victims, Nisha said, “I got goosebumps while performing this sequence. I just want to say to all the domestic violence victims that they should take a stand for themselves. Nothing is more important than their dignity. There’s no shame in talking out and walking out on your abusive partners. Please put an end to this shameful act.”
