“I Disown your Film” : Kashmiri Pandit Woman Breaks Down,Lashes Out at Vidhu Vinod Chopra at Shikara screening

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Shikara: The Untold Story of Kashmiri Pandits starring Aadil Khan and Sadia released in theatres on Friday, February 7, 2020. The film faced a box office clash with Mohit Suri’s Malang and has been receiving mixed reviews from the audience and critics. 

However, things turned ugly at one such screening in Delhi at a theatre in Connaught Place, Delhi, where a woman, belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit community, broke down after watching the film and lashed out at the director as well.

After the film’s screening, director  Vidhu Vinod Chopra came to interact with the audience, where the woman lashed out at him and accused him of commercializing the plight of Kashmiri Pandits. The video of the same has been surfacing online.

The woman claims that the film Shikara doesn't portray the actual suffering of the community including the genocide, mass rapes and mass murders committed by Islamic radical groups. "Ye aapka commercialism aapko mubarak ho (Congratulations on your commercialism). As a Kashmiri Pandit, I disown your film, I disown it," said the woman.

Further, the woman also raised questions on the director's decision to cast Muslim actors to play the lead roles in the film. She said, "You could have cast Kashmiri Pandit actors, but you chose to take Muslim actors. Why did play these politics?"

Reacting to her accusations, Chopra said that he will work on the sequel to the film. He said, "Truth has two faces. People have different perspectives on the same issues."
