GHKKPM's Aditya Deshmukh on being judged for his looks and weight: 'I have gone through...'

Aditya Deshmukh, known for his performances in Ziddi Dil Maane Na, Lag Ja Gale, and Suhaagan, and currently seen in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin, believes that an actor's appearance plays a key role in the casting process. While talent is essential, he acknowledges that looking the part often becomes a deciding factor.

“At the end of the day, face value plays a significant role. When people invest in you, they expect you to align with a certain image or persona. In the entertainment industry, this is particularly evident. The casting process involves multiple parameters, and it is the job of a casting director to present potential candidates to producers and directors who are searching for a specific look or persona that fits the character. While talent is crucial, the visual aspect remains,” he says.

When asked if he has ever been judged based on his looks, weight, height, or clothing, he admits, “I have been judged on my appearance multiple times. One of the common remarks I receive is about my fair complexion—people often comment on how fair I am. As for weight, I have gone through fluctuations over time. In the television industry, maintaining a consistent fitness routine can be quite challenging due to the demanding schedules. Unlike films or web series, where actors often get time to focus on their physical well-being, television requires continuous work, leaving little room for gym sessions or structured fitness routines. However, within the industry, people understand these challenges. There is an unspoken acknowledgment of the demanding nature of our work, and fortunately, outright body shaming is rare. The industry is evolving, and while appearance matters, there is a growing acceptance of different body types and looks.”

Despite this, he prefers to keep things casual when stepping out. “I am never overly conscious about my appearance when I step out. I prioritize comfort over style, and I firmly believe that one should wear what makes them feel comfortable rather than adhering to societal expectations. Fashion, for me, is about feeling at ease in my own skin rather than dressing up just to impress others. Only when I am comfortable can I truly enjoy life, and that is what matters the most to me.”

He acknowledges that good looks have always played a role in the industry but notes that things are changing. “Good looks have always played a role, but the industry is evolving, and talent is now taking centre stage. The emergence of actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the late Irrfan Khan has reshaped industry standards. These actors proved that talent, depth, and a strong screen presence can outweigh conventional beauty norms. They have transformed the narrative by using their performances and personalities to create an impact. While appearance still holds some importance, it is no longer the sole criterion for success.”

He further elaborates, “Today, audiences seek compelling storytelling and powerful performances. If we look at the recent trend of re-releasing old movies, it is evident that audiences are craving good content. The lack of strong storytelling in some of the recent releases has made people question the direction in which the industry is headed. Viewers are becoming more discerning, and they now appreciate depth and substance over just glamour. This shift is encouraging, as it allows for a more diverse range of actors and stories to flourish.”
