Gujarati filmmaker Mahesh Kalawadia, also known as Mahesh Jirawala, has been confirmed dead following the recent Ahmedabad plane crash. Concerns arose after he was reported missing near Shahibaug on the day of the incident.
Recent reports indicate that a burnt Activa scooter registered to Jirawala was found at the crash site, raising suspicions of his involvement. His mobile phone's last tracked location matched the crash site before it went off, suggesting he was among the victims. These findings ultimately confirmed his tragic death in the accident.
DNA test results have confirmed his identity, resolving initial reluctance from Jirawala’s family to accept the body. The family, initially in disbelief, agreed to claim the body after police presented strong evidence, including his Activa’s registration and the DNA report, confirming his tragic demise.
The Gujarati film community and fans are shocked by the confirmation of Mahesh Jirawala’s death.
Mahesh, who was also the CEO of the production house, Mahesh Jirawala Productions, was well-known for his work directing advertorials and music videos. His portfolio included numerous music videos, primarily in the Gujarati language, showcasing his creative versatility. In addition to his work in music, the filmmaker had also ventured into feature films, directing the 2019 film "Cocktail Premi Pag Of Revenge," which starred Asha Panchal and Vruti Thakkar in the lead roles. This film further highlighted his ability to bring compelling stories to life on screen, solidifying his reputation within the Gujarati film industry.
On June 12, Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANB), crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, resulting in the tragic loss of 241 lives out of 242 on board, with only one survivor.
Air India confirmed the accident in an official statement on X and wrote, “UPDATE: Air India confirms that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in an accident. The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital."
The victims included individuals from various nationalities, highlighting the global impact of the tragedy. The sole survivor, 40-year-old British businessman Vishwas from Leicester, is in critical but stable condition, according to reports.
