Bollywood is currently witnessing a surge in the re-release of classic films, giving audiences a chance to relive cinematic masterpieces on the big screen. Adding to this trend, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavat is set to return to Indian theatres on January 24, 2025. Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor, the 2018 period drama has garnered cult status over the years and remains one of Bollywood's most celebrated films.
The announcement was made by Viacom 18 Studios and Bhansali Productions on January 22, with a collaborative post on Instagram. The poster featured the iconic characters of Alauddin Khilji, Rani Padmavati, and Maharawal Ratan Singh, played by the stellar cast.
Padmaavat is based on the legendary story of Rani Padmavati of Chittor. The film chronicles the struggle and sacrifice of the Rajput queen and her kingdom as they face the ruthless ambitions of Alauddin Khilji, a tyrannical ruler obsessed with Padmavati's beauty and power. The climax, which depicts the queen and countless Rajput women performing jauhar (mass self-immolation), remains one of the most impactful moments in Indian cinema.

Initially titled Padmavati, the film faced opposition from various groups who claimed it distorted historical facts. The title was later changed to Padmaavat following legal and political challenges. Despite these hurdles, the film achieved massive box office success, earning critical acclaim and widespread appreciation for its performances, music, and grandeur.
The trend of re-releasing films is becoming increasingly popular. Recently, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), starring Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor, hit theatres again, earning over Rs 5.45 crore during its limited run. Other notable re-releases include Tumbbad, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Satya, and Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, each drawing fans eager to relive cherished cinematic moments.
With Padmaavat returning to the silver screen, audiences are set to experience its opulent visuals and gripping narrative once more.
