Deepika Padukone will be essaying the character of an acid attack survivor in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhappaak. Based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, the film also stars Vikrant Massey and highlights the life and struggles of acid attack survivors.

The trailer and first posters of the movie have received an overwhelming response and Deepika’s adaptation of an acid attack survivor seems authentic and evokes a bunch of emotions as well. Chhappak is going to be a voice for change, however, even before this movie, Shah Rukh Khan launched an initiative called Meer Foundation for the betterment of acid attack survivors.

While the star cast is on a promotional spree for their upcoming movie, Deepika, in a recent interaction with Times of India recalled that SRK had expressed his wish to do something good for the survivors during the shooting of their film, and she is glad that the actor actually worked on the idea and launched the foundation.

Deepika revealed that she got to know about SRK’s Meer Foundation after she started shooting for Chhapaak. “He (Shah Rukh Khan) had already started doing it at an individual level and I think he has been doing it for years, he just never spoke about it. I think he has been financially supporting survivors at an individual level and I remember him mentioning to us that he would like to do this at a much larger level. And then, I haven’t seen him in a while. It’s almost a coincidence that I started hearing about the Meer foundation almost around the same time when we started filming ‘Chhapaak’.

The actress expressed how happy it made her know that Shah Rukh acted on his wish and actually launched the foundation for acid attack survivors. “Then, it made me feel like - Oh, Wow! Something like this he would talk about has actually taken shape and is actually there in the form. It’s nice to see that something that he felt for and something that he believed in is actually followed through and that they do such incredible work” shared Deepika.

Deepika also shared that she hopes that the film makes people see and deliver the right message that they want to convey. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak is co-produced by Deepika and is slated to release on January 10, 2020.
