Kapil Sharma's recent joke about director Atlee on The Great Indian Kapil Show has sparked a wave of backlash, especially from singer Chinmayi Sripaada. Kapil’s comment, which some viewers saw as a derogatory remark about Atlee's appearance, was made during the grand finale of the show. Atlee was present to promote his upcoming film, Baby John, alongside the film's stars, Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi.
While interacting with Atlee, Kapil made a subtle joke, asking, "When you meet a star for the first time, do they ask, 'Where is Atlee?'" This comment was met with an uncomfortable response from Atlee, who calmly said, “In a way, I understood your question. I’m very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir for producing my first film. He asked for a script but didn’t judge my looks or my capabilities. He loved my narration. The world should learn not to judge by appearance, but by the heart.”
This clip quickly went viral on social media, leading to widespread criticism of Kapil's joke. Among those who expressed their disapproval was Chinmayi Sripaada, a well-known singer in the Tamil and Telugu film industry. Chinmayi didn’t hold back and took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her thoughts.

Chinmayi’s remarks resonated with many social media users. One Twitter user shared their thoughts, saying, “Kapil Sharma may be a nice person otherwise, but he makes racist, sexist, body-shaming, homophobic jokes all the time on his show.” Another user pointed out, “His silly question reflects the fair-skin obsession of North Indians.”
As the controversy continues, neither Kapil Sharma nor Atlee has responded to the backlash. However, many fans of Atlee’s work, particularly after Jawan, have shown their support, condemning the comedian’s insensitive joke.
