The Cannes Film Festival, known for its glamour and high fashion, has set new guidelines for red carpet attire in 2025. These rules prohibit dramatic gowns, revealing nude dresses, and excessively long trains, aiming for a more streamlined and less ostentatious aesthetic. But for Vir Das, rules are merely suggestions. The comedian and actor humorously poked fun at the festival's rules.
Vir Das posted on Instagram what seemed to be a picture of him at the French Riviera, wearing a voluminous, nude-colored outfit with a lavish train, appearing to break every dress code rule the festival had announced. But, it was a fake.
Capitalizing on the new red carpet policies, Vir Das captioned his post: “Large, voluminous, nude, long train. In your face #cannesfilmfestival you don’t know what you’re missing." His humorous take on the Cannes fashion debate highlighted that, while absent from the event, he remained a relevant voice in the discussion.

In a previous post, he humorously wrote, It is with deep regret that I announce I will no longer be attending the Cannes film festival because of the new red carpet rules. For multiple generations nude voluminous gowns with large trains have been culturally specific to the comedy community…"He continued, describing a faux couture outfit he had planned—complete with a 78-foot-long train and sleeves that “gently showcased the heart of [his] s*****m."
Beyond the humor, Vir Das also used his platform to challenge the elitism within Bollywood concerning influencers at the Cannes Film Festival. In a post, he defended the presence of digital creators, writing, "Look. I work largely with new unknown designers. So I get the appeal and eyeballs that a red carpet brings… I also respect the hustle that it takes to get yourself there."
