Right on the brink of the monstrous hit that was Lagaan, director Ashutosh Gowariker decided to take an entirely different route altogether with his next film. From the scale and ensemble that Lagaan presented, Gowariker went on to plan and execute a simple but effective story in the form of Swades.
The film starring Shah Rukh Khan as the lead went on to become one of the most critically-acclaimed films ever even though it was not successful at the box office. Even more, the film has now recognised to be a cult and only gathers more and more fans with times and generations passing by. Today marks a special day as Swades completes 17 years. On the eve of this, Gowariker went on to share a fascinating and special anecdote from the film that will make you the film even more.
His caption read, "On this 17th Year of Swades, sharing a BTS image -
8 of the 30 women that I auditioned for the character of Dadi Setu. All had to look up at the camera and say one word – BIJLI! The woman who said it with the most emotion, got the part. She was 102.
If you have seen Swades, you would remember that moment really well and indeed that one word went on to express a thousand emotions to one and all.
Swades continues to be one of our favorites, isn't it?
