In a deeply tragic turn of events, an Air India flight bound for London crashed just five minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose death was confirmed hours later, sending shockwaves across the nation.
As the country grapples with the heartbreaking incident, Bollywood actor Salman Khan made a respectful decision to cancel his scheduled appearance at a brand event in Mumbai. Khan was to be announced as the brand ambassador for the Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL) in a grand ceremony on Thursday evening. However, the organisers and the actor mutually decided to call off the event in light of the national tragedy.
In an official statement, ISRL said, "As you all know, a tragic incident occurred earlier in the day. It's a sad time for everybody. ISRL and Mr Salman Khan stand united with the nation in these tough times. We have taken a responsible joint decision to reschedule this event as it's not a time for celebration."
The organisers further extended their condolences, saying, "We stand by the nation united. All our prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones."
The flight, AI 171, had taken off at 1:38 PM and was en route to London when it crashed into a residential area, triggering massive panic. Dark plumes of smoke were seen billowing in the sky, with visuals quickly going viral on social media platforms. Rescue teams and emergency services rushed to the spot while authorities cordoned off the area. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has confirmed a detailed investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the crash.
With 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese passengers on board, the accident has sparked an international wave of grief and concern. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed on the situation, and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has rushed to Ahmedabad to assess the aftermath personally.
This tragic event has not only shaken the nation but also brought moments of silence and solidarity from public figures, underlining the seriousness and sensitivity of the loss.
