Netflix’s latest hit Adolescence has taken the world by storm, becoming one of the most talked-about limited series in recent times. Released last month, the show impressed audiences with its intense storyline, unique one-shot filming technique, and the breakout performance of debutant Owen Cooper.
Despite minimal marketing, Adolescence became a global sensation. It has now secured its place among Netflix’s most-watched English-language series of all time. The show earned 96.7 million views in just 17 days, surpassing Stranger Things Season 3 (94.8 million views) and pushing Bridgerton Season 2 (93.8 million views) out of the top 10 list. Given its rising popularity, the numbers are expected to grow even further in the coming weeks.
The Netflix rankings are calculated based on a 91-day viewership window, meaning Adolescence still has over two months to climb higher. This remarkable achievement highlights how the show has resonated with audiences worldwide.
The four-part drama miniseries is based on true incidents and revolves around a shocking murder case. The official synopsis states, “A 13-year-old is accused of the murder of a classmate. His family, therapist, and the detective in charge are all left asking what really happened.”
Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie Miller, delivered an exceptional performance, especially in episode three, which was filmed in a single continuous shot. Despite being his first acting experience, Cooper left a lasting impact on viewers and critics alike. The series also stars Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, Ashley Walters, and Faye Marsay.
Directed by Philip Barantini, Adolescence explores the effects of social media and peer pressure on young boys. Co-writer Stephen Graham explained, “One of our aims was to ask, ‘What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?’”
The show’s powerful message has even caught the attention of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has supported Netflix’s initiative to stream the series for free in UK secondary schools. This move ensures that more teenagers can watch and learn from the gripping drama. With its compelling storytelling and deep social relevance, Adolescence has truly made history.
