Aamir Khan Says He Became an Alcoholic After Divorce from Reena Dutta, Calls Himself ‘Devdas’

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently opened up about his emotional struggles following his divorce from Reena Dutta. In a candid conversation with Instant Bollywood, Aamir revealed that he went into a deep depression after their separation and turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism.

During the interview, Aamir shared that he isolated himself for almost two to three years after the breakup. He admitted that he didn’t work or listen to scripts, spending most of his time alone at home. “When Reena and I broke up, I was in mourning for almost two-three years. I wasn’t working or listening to scripts. I was alone at home, and for almost one and a half years, I drank a lot,” he said.

Aamir, who was previously a teetotaler, revealed that his drinking habits changed drastically during this phase. “You will be shocked to know that I was a teetotaler. After the split, I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t sleep at night, and I started drinking. From someone who didn’t drink at all, I went to being someone who drank an entire bottle in a day. Main Devdas tha! (I was like Devdas), exactly Devdas. Someone who is trying to destroy themselves. I did that for one and a half years. I was in a deep depression," he confessed.

Reflecting on his journey, Aamir emphasized the importance of facing losses. “You have to accept how important it was for you. Accept that what was once yours is not there now. Also accept how good it was when it was there, and how much you will miss it when it isn’t there anymore,” he shared.

Aamir and Reena Dutta tied the knot in 1986 and have two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. They divorced in 2002. The actor later married Kiran Rao in 2005, but they also parted ways in 2021. Recently, Aamir introduced his new girlfriend, Gauri Spratt, at his pre-birthday bash, revealing that they have been dating for 18 months.
