Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has finally opened up about a passion project he has held close for years—an ambitious retelling of the Mahabharat. While promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, the actor revealed that he will turn his full attention to the epic saga after its release. And if things go as he envisions, this could be the concluding chapter of his cinematic journey.
In a recent interview with entrepreneur Raj Shamani on his podcast, Aamir shared, “It’s layered, it has emotion, it has scale, everything you find in the world, you will find in Mahabharat.” According to him, the scale and complexity of the tale have always fascinated him. It’s the one story, he added, that has stayed with him across decades and one he dreams of bringing to the big screen with justice.
He even hinted at the possibility of Mahabharat being his last film, saying, “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that.” He added thoughtfully, “I hope that I die with my shoes on, but since you are asking, this is the one thing I can think of. Perhaps after this, I will feel that I don’t need to do anything else.”
Earlier, in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Aamir had admitted the project is among his “biggest ambitions” and noted that even writing a solid script could take years.
He is yet to decide whether he will act in the film himself. “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part,” Aamir said, indicating that casting will depend entirely on the fit for each character. Directing duties, too, may be distributed. “I don’t think you can tell the Mahabharat in one film, so it will be multiple films. I am looking at the large scale,” he explained.
He further added that more than one director might be needed to manage the scope. “To complete it within a set time, we will need more than one director,” he said, underlining the scale of what could be one of India’s most ambitious cinematic projects.
