Chapter 2
When Kuhu had called Mishti a dukhi-aatma before, she had surely never imagined her in this state.
She was aware that Mishti had gone to meet Abir, the night after the entire fiasco. Mishti had taken her time, giving herself a pep-talk and Kuhu had watched from her sleeping position on the bed, wondering if her sister was going to be heartbroken yet again or would she be lucky this time.
Her questions had been answered almost three hours later, when Mishti had walked in through the door, looking lifeless. Kuhu could feel her own eyes tear up. While she had began to not believe in love, it was watching Mishti and Abir that she realised, love did exist. Kuhu had just gotten it wrong. So when, Mishti fell on the bed, choking back on a sob, Kuhu feel a part of her crack a little. She lay still, waiting to see what Mishti would do.
She observed. Mishti sat there for a long time, her back facing a sleeping Kuhu. Her body racked with muffled sobs. When Kuhu couldn't take it anymore, she sat up and scooted closer, wrapping her arms around her elder sister. As Mishti realised, she let go of her attempts to be quiet and turned around and broke down in Kuhu's arms.
All Kuhu could do was rub her hands against Mishti's back and let her cry. She knew Mishti needed to.
“Why did he do this Kuhu? He has to have some reasons. There has to be something. Why give me hopes and then...”
So Kuhu sat there, listening as her dear sister let it all out.
---
Two days after the show that Abir and Mishti's pre-wedding ritual was, Kuhu sent Kunal a simple text message.
I am ready for divorce. Make new papers I misplaced the previous ones. Don't talk to the families before I tell you to, everyone is still mad...
Kuhu waited. He had read her text and not replied for a long time. Kuhu wondered what it was, what was taking him so long to jump on the opportunity he was dying to have?
She doused the little flicker of hope before it could grow into a full blown fire. She had to. If there was anything these last couple months had taught her it was that love wasn't real.
---
Almost two weeks later, Kuhu and Kunal met. They had been waiting for the perfect time and when Mishti flew to London for her studies, Kuhu knew it was best to get it over with. The last thing she wanted was Mishti to have to even hear about them, much less have her interact with them. Mishti's state was too fragile for it.
Kuhu and Kunal went and talked to her mother first and explained everything, right from the beginning. Kunal ferverently apologized and walked out of the room to give Kuhu and Varsha space. Then, her mother had said the words Kuhu did not want to hear.
“How can you say he doesn't love you? I saw it in his eyes myself, Kuhu.”
And Kuhu had shushed her mother just as quick as she shushed her heart. There was no Kuhu and Kunal. There was only Kuhu. Only Kunal.
Right outside the door, Kunal got a moment of introspection. His mother had gone as far getting him married to a woman he did not love. Just because of her dislike. Gone as far as breaking Kuhu's heart (not that he didn't realise his own part in this drama). Kunal realised, his mother would do anything. That she hated Mishti too much to see reason and for the first time, Kunal realised how his brother must have felt. The exact same way Kunal felt when she asked him to swear by her and marry Kuhu, despite every cell in his body telling him to not do it to her. That it would break the fiesty Kuhu and leave her a non-believer.
Just like how they had broken Mishti. For the first time, Kunal felt absolutely terrible for ruining their lives. They should have simply let Ketaki choose a guy herself. None of this would have happened and the lovely Maheshwari girls would have been saved from heartbreak. Also his brother, most definitely his brother.
---
Three months later, Kuhu waited for the Skype call to connect, excited to tell Mishti all about her day. As soon as it connected, she frowned to see a man on the other side.
“Tum kaun?”
She checked the number dialed, it still read Mishti. Even the email address was hers.
“Oh I am so sorry. Mishti and I were studying and woh apna phone class mai bhul gayi.” Kuhu resisted the urge to smile at his accent, she had more persisting matters.
“Yeh ladki kitni careless hai.” Kuhu mumbled.
Almost immediately she heard Mishti panting. “Thank God you have my phone.”
Mishti frowned as she adjusted the screen to mke it face her. “Why did you pick up the call? It's only Kuhu, Badi Maa ya Bade Papa hote na, toh sab gadbad ho jata.”
“Oh hello, don't think I am letting you go easily. Since when did you start having study sessions with boys?”
Mishti awkwardly smiled, eyes focused behind the phone. Kuhu bit her lip as she realised the blue-eyed boy was still around. She heard him laugh and bid bye, before looking at Mishti curiously.
“Well, I managed to make one friend. I miss you though.”
Even though she noticed the obvious attempt to change the topic, Kuhu was glad Mishti had a friend all the way across the world. Someone around her. Maybe she could even move on.
---
About seven more months later, Kuhu excitedly waited for the Skype call to connect, yet again. It had become their thing, to call each other once in a week and check on each other. Mishti knew of the divorce but Kuhu kept from divulging in the details. She knew that the blue-eyed boy, who she later came to know was called Nishant, has become one of Mishti's best friends ever. She had even talked to him a lot of times now, he was funny and smart and did care about Mishti. Kuhu told her about the event planning business, Mishti told her about the firm she and Nishant were working on. Their conversations were now more easy-flowing.
“I am so glad you'll finally be in Rajkot. I am missing you so much.”
Mishti faked a shocked expression before laughing a little. “I miss you too drama queen.”
“Main bhi!” came a voice from behind Mishti. “I am so excited to meet you.” he winked at her. “And so excited to meet your family Mishti. Thank you so much for letting me stay at your house. I am going to explore Rajkot so much!”
Mishti shook her head. “Yes, we know. I have seen your itineary and I know you will toss it aside within a day.”
“You want to bet on it? Oh, also, my bestest friend is getting married. Who knew, Mishti will give me housing options right where she is planning to get married. Thank you so much for saving my hotel expenses.”
“Oh hello, who said there are no expenses?” Kuhu broke their conversation. “If you want to stay here, don't forget all those gifts I've asked for.”
“Yes meri maa.” He bowed for effect making both the ladies laugh.
“Now hurry up, we have our flight in 3 hours.”
Nishant was gone, muttering about booking a cab when Kuhu saw Mishti frown.
“What event are you currently planning?”
“Oh it's a friend's birthday.” Kuhu did not like lying but she couldn't help it either.
“Kunal's?” Mishti prompted and Kuhu looked at her in shock. How could she possibly know? As if reading her mind, Mishti shook her head. “He is standing right behind you.”
Kuhu whipped around to find Kunal standing there, smiling sheepishly.
“I am so sorry, I didn't mean to but Mami was looking for you-”
“Hi Kunal!” Mishti softly spoke, blinking a little too much.
“Hey Mishti! Kuhu told me about your business idea. I am sure it will be a success. If you need any help you can tell me.”
Mishti smiled. “You don't have to.”
“Oh, I am genuinely interested in the idea.”
An awkward silence loomed around as the three flitted glances.
“I am sorry Mishti.” Kunal looked at her with a guilty smile. “Whatever happened—”
Mishti cut him off before he could speak, “It does not matter anymore. It was for the best.”
Kunal nodded awkwardly and walked away.
“Kuhu?”
“Mishti, I swear I didn't want to hide but—”
“I don't want you getting hurt.”
“We are good friends now. The marriage was doomed even before it happened. I like this friendship. He is a good friend.”
“And your smile tells me you still love him.”
“And you know love just doesn't vanish that easily. It was baseless and meaningless but he is still the first guy I loved. Would be a little hard to get over that. But I have come to terms with the fact that there is nothing in our future. This is just a happy extension I could manage.”
Mishti smiled sadly. Not liking the sudden change in mood, Kuhu promptly added, “Now come soon, I am baking a cake and I promise it won't have salt instead of sugar this time.”
Mishti laughed and disconnected, leaving Kuhu behind with a heavy heart. While Mishti had correctly guessed Kuhu was lying, she hadn't understood the truth either. Kuhu looked at the list lying on the table in front of her.
Abir weds Neha.
---
So, changes changes. Nishant is not Nannu, simply because I don't want that name anywhere near Vatsal🙃 Helly has a more prominent role than she did in the show and there is angst :D
The first two chapters were outsiders' perspectives. Next in line: Mishti Agrawal.
Oh oh, and I got requests for sending PMs. All those interested in PMs, could you please send me a buddy request so I can simply send a bunch of PMs together? :D

As always, absolutely phenomenal. This insight into Nanko's mind is amazing. I hope we get to see more chapters from his POV in the story. The little cues he's picked up in this are amazing. I absolutely love how he's so perceptive. After all, Abir has all but raised him, and with such a perceptive guardian, it's good to see Kunal is the same.
I love that bit where Abir says he loves Kunal more than Kunal can even imagine and how Kunal picks up on it. That's just such a heart-breaking moment but so poignant yet the same.
I'm really looking forward to read more of this. I'm so excited! And, as far as I know, Helly's character is Neha, and Vatsal's is Nannu. Ugh. I hope that's a nickname and he has a better real, actual name.
Thank you so much!💓 I am glad you like these nuances.
Well, he isn't Nannu here, I have fleshed out too much of the story to go back and make him Mishti's brother-like-figure now :P
