Outdated Ideas Regarding Motherhood

I was very disappointed that Akshara said that ultimately every woman would like to be a mother. This idea that that is a woman's only and ultimate purpose is very backwards. If a woman wants to be a mother that's fine, but if she does not want to be one that is fine too! It should be her choice. Women are not born to simply be mothers. Their identity is not simply to be a mother.

It's disappointing that these serials perpetuate such ideas, almost as if this represents all women. I honestly don't understand how actors and actresses agree to say such lines...yes it's their job but if they weren't on board with these ideas, would they really carry out saying them? 🤔

It would be nice to see a drama for once that fights back against such a narrative. It's simply unfair and sexist.

Akshara belongs to the category of people who want to become a mother. What's wrong with that? Especially because she was deprived of a happy childhood. She said any women who wants to become a mom will feel upset that she couldn't become one. She never said women's identity is all about being a mother. She is even working on her career.

No problem is that अक्षरा the character made a blanket statement implying that women of whatever generation does ultimately have a deep wish within themselves to become mothers.

If she wants to be a mother no problem that'a good thing but she didnt just said that "hey! Abhi I really wanna be a mom "no she made a general statement how women of every generation ultimately have this wish to embrace motherhood.

Now problem is that it's a very famous series watched by common man where already such ideas like the ultimate role of women is to be a mother is already well prevailed then such dialogues from female leads who are already seen as ideal women does not help the case of women who wants to have an independent identity apart from motherhood.

It's true many women wants to be mother but guess what this generation of women are not only interested in just being mothers and many even wants to have child free lifestyle wanting to have comfort in their career or traveling.

Even many women who wants to be mothers wants to take different approach from traditional pregnancy like adoption or surrogacy.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to be a mother and no doubt अक्षरा would be an awesome one but when such characters make such blanket statements about motherhood it does not help women who wants to have different path from traditional lifestyle.

They want trps and 10k episodes so obviously they would want kids..unless they follow Tata family 👪 every heroine of theirs desperately want to have kids but can't have them but still have them ....naksh and akshara took 500+ epis to be born ..the emotional scenes where a woman can't conceive , then magically she does , n she separates by then and reappears with a child post leap , trp audience love it .

The day when our heroine would say "I don't want kids bec it's my choice " , we can confidently say we have progressed. But currently, 99% of the women relate to this statement of akshara . In yrkkh world women are desperate for marriage and children , taunts of mil , mistrust of husband , and setting right the dysfunctional family. They want all of it they love it. Can't help it .

Yes if we look at it even abhimanyu never asked akshara's opinion whether she wants to become a mother...he straightway went till her delivery and telling her kids will happen ..it's basic his expectations from akshara are sex and babies

I think what she meant was with respect to her mother and grandmother. That women of any generation want kids. it's a simple callback, not an identity. The whole monologue was just to make Abhi feel bad and establish that they both want kids. It's not a general statement on what women should or should not do.

If they want to write a story about a woman not wanting kids it will have to be its own separate show and they can explore that more in-depth. It's not valid for a show like yrkkh. They want multiple generations.

She belongs to the category of people that do but she made a generic statement which you clearly missed. You might be attached to a character so you would like to justify it, but there are problematic things these serials push. And it's about time that people (including yourself and the two that liked your comment) start understanding that.

Things will never change if we don't start pointing these out smfh. And also, I explained what's wrong with these blanket statements. I think you may need to rewatch the scene.
