Ok guys this is great - thanks for playing! Here are some facts:

1) The picture of this dress apparently made the social media rounds about 6 years ago and thousands of people couldn't agree on the color. About 70% of people thought the dress is white and gold, and 20% thought it was blue and black (we're pretty close here). About 10% people could switch between the two colors depending on when they looked. Another 2% saw something entirely different.

2) This isn't an optical illusion, it has nothing to do with how the eyes perceive the picture or colors. But rather how the brain processes the input from the eyes, based on what it thinks is the CONTEXT of the input (called top down processing). The idea is people who are LARKS (morning people, who spend a lot of time outdoors or in the sunshine) see the picture as white and gold because their brain assumes the picture is taken in outdoor light and that the blue/black is a shadow it subtracts automatically from the retinal images. People who are OWLS (who stay up late, work indoors a lot) contextually assume the picture as being taken in artificial light and their brain retains the blue/black color.

3) The actual dress is in fact blue and black (with the picture taken indoors). However while the majority of people might seem to be factually wrong by picking white and gold, they're only incorrect because of how their brains perceive the SUBJECTIVE REPRESENTATION of the dress (not the real dress itself) - so their perception of this image is their reality.

Some people's neurocircuitry is flexible enough or different enough that they can switch between the contexts or come up with a different context depending on how they look at the picture or when they look at the picture (that's Ambajee, Anusha, Ekahriz and her parents, and Zenab here).

So what am I getting at with this? Honestly nothing really - I just wanted to see if our little population here could reproduce the results of the scientific paper my class is studying and it was close enough (i find that very cool).

But also, dudes, if we cannot agree on the COLOR OF A DRESS because of how differently our brains process the context of a subjective image, no wonder we can't agree on fictional tv characters whose subjective reality is constantly being filtered through whatever lens the writers chose on any given day! 🤣

Different people process the same set of sensory inputs completely differently because of the contexts (environmental, social, whatever) hard-wired into their brains. So some of us dislike Abhimanyu, some of us love him (he's a subjective fictional character). We all seem to love HC (he's the true blue dress😆). We all do different top down processing - ultimately no one's right and no one's wrong but everyone's perception of these characters is THEIR reality and what's valid for them...
