She hit the redial button again and again as her attempts got desperate. Silent tears ran down her cheeks. "Pick up the phone Raman", she whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she glanced at the clock over and over again.
Raman leaned back in the seat of his car, letting his phone ring with his fist clenched, his heart pounding and with a dreadful headache. He would not let himself go weak. She deserved the happy and simple life she led before he came into it and destroyed it completely.
Ishita was trying to reach Raman frantically. Something was wrong!
He had been very lost of late after the Ruhi incident. It was as if he had withdrawn into a shell.
His eyes!
They were always the windows to his soul and they were showing so much pain and sadness lately.
What was wrong with him?
Was he still upset with the way she had yelled at him? Was he still hurt by her words spoken out of anger and fear?
No! Ishita was sure Raman knew and understood what she was going through at that time.
*flashback*
- I can't believe this Raman! How could you be so irresponsible? How could you Raman? In Ruhi's school! In front of the Judge! And till how long did you plan to hide it from me? You even made Ruhi lie to me? I don't believe this! I swear Raman. If anything happens to my daughter, if anybody tries to snatch her away from me, I will...
-Ishita! Listen to me!
-No! I will not listen to you. I don't care what you have to say. I want my daughter with me! Ruhi merl zindagi hain samjhe aap? I can't live without her.
- Ishita! Please listen to me. I am sorry. I...
- Mujhe aap ke sorry nahin chahiye Raman. I only want my daughter in my life, with me. BAS!! I care for nothing else.
Shattered she let herself fall on the bed with her head in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably unable to hold it anymore.
- Ishita!
- Leave me alone Raman.
She screamed, completely out of herself, pulling her hand away, pushing his chest as she gazed at him with bloodshot eyes.
- It is all YOUR fault Raman. You and your gussa! It always gets the best of you...
I...You...A...Anything happens...and my daughter is snatched away from me!
Unable to see her in such state, unable to control himself any longer, Raman pulled Ishita up, holding her firmly by her shoulders and shook her with all his might.
- Enough Ishita! You now listen to me. Ruhi is MY daughter too. I am not letting anybody taking her away at any cost.
SHE. IS. NOT. GOING. ANYWHERE.
You understand!
Without a word, her pain evident on her face, her fears reflecting in her eyes, she clutched to his shirt, crying...wailing in pain... as she clung to his chest.
- Raman!!
As she cried his name and buried her face in his chest to muffle her cries, Raman could not stop his tears. He tightened his hold around her as his heart squeezed in pain. But it was not the time to feel weak. He pulled her away and looked in her teary eyes.
- Do you trust me Ishita?
She only nodded back, breathing in between her sobs.
- Bas! Don't worry. I will set things right. Tumhari aur hamari beti ke khushi mere liye sab se important hain. Nobody and nothing will separate you from your Ruhi. This is my promise to you.
*flashback*
No it couldn't be that. If that was the case, he would have left angrily and wouldn't embrace, reassure and console her like he did.
And then after that...
Ishita smiled lovingly at the pic set as her wall paper on her mobile.
It was a selfie of the joy and love of her life...the father and daughter duo, smiling at her lovingly.
Her favourite pic of the two. The one they sent her when they went for a picnic with Adi and his mom.
That pic with both of them smiling adorably at her had made her forget all the tensions and insecurities she was feeling at that time when they had went away...
Her two babies...
She chuckled.
Yes he was also a child just like Ruhi and she would say the one who would keep her on her toes the most.
No it couldn't be that.
She sighed, holding the pic near her heart. She leaned back on her armchair and closed her eyes as she reminisced the cherished moments they had spent together after her outburst.
*flashback*
He was still holding her and she was still wiping her tears away when their bundle of joy and innocence had entered the room with a plate in her hands.
- Ishima, papa! Agar aap donon ke fight khaatam ho gaye ho to kya mujhe khanna milega. Mujhe bahut bhuk lagi hain.
The two immediately pulled away from each other and smiled at their adorable daughter.
- Awww. Sorry baby. Ishima ne apni baby ko bhuki rehene diya.
As Ishita bent down and kneeled in front of her daughter to take her in her embrace, Ruhi signaled her father to kneel down too.
- Chalo, aap donon kaan pakdo. Now...Jaldi se Ruhi ko kissy do.
Raman and Ishita both smiled in between their tears as they pecked their daughter's cheek. She was always there to lift their mood. Always there to bound them together when the risk of breaking down and falling apart was high.
- Chalo lets feed this bhukkad!!
- Hawww!! Very wrong papa!!
They all laughed as Raman picked his daughter up and sat on the bed with her on his lap. Ishita took the plate from Ruhi's hand and sat on the mat in front of them to feed her hungry daughter as Raman looked on fondly. Taking in a morsel of rice and dal, Ruhi said innocently holding her ears.
- Ishima I am sorry. Please don't be angry with papa. We love you na! We can't see you upset. Isliye hum ne aap se school waali fight nahin bataya.
Teary eyed, too choked with emotions, Ishita only shook her head and brush away the tears on her cheek to indicate that she was not angry. She smiled lovingly at her daughter.
- Thank you Ishima. We promise that we will never lie to you. Hain na papa?
Raman nodded and squeezed her daughter to him.
- Ok beta. Now eat. Don't talk with your mouth full.
-Ok Ishima...Ishima, papa ko bhi khilao naa! He must be hungry too. Hain na papa?
This time Raman only looked awkwardly at Ishita who looked back with the same expression. He was to say something but stopped as he saw her tear a piece of roti and dip it in the dal to lift it back to his lips.
With a lump in his throat, he took in the food as Ruhi looked on with a huge smile. And then just like his carbon copy did moments ago, holding his ears, he muttered:
- Ishita...Sorry...
- Aap ko bhi batana padega! Don't talk when your mouth is full.
Ruhi chuckled cutely as Raman and Ishita shared a soul searing eye lock. When Raman took the plate from her hands to feed her, a touched and emotional Ishita took in the food with a smile. She blushed profusely when he touched her lips with his thumb to wipe away some curry at the corner of her mouth. Stuttering, she muttered:
- Thank you and...sorry for...
- DONT TALK WHEN YOUR MOUTH IS FULL.
Raman and Ruhi said in unison!!
All three burst out laughing as Ruhi pulled her parents to her, side hugging them tightly.
*flashback*
Ishita sat up with the smile still lingering on her lips and sighed as she heard a knock at the door.
The security guard was standing with a big envelope in his hand.
A courier has just come for her.
Surprised she stood up and took it from him.
As she opened it, Ishita's face turned white and she felt like the ground has just slipped from under her feet. Clutching the armrest for support, she finally dropped herself heavily on her chair as the envelope fell from her hand.
No this could not be true. He would not...
A shiver ran through her. Trying desperately to stay calm, she muttered mentally to herself. "Everything is now fine. The tsunami which had threatened to engulf our life was behind them. They have again conquered it with their sincerity, trust and an unwavering support system. It is just a...a...nightmare ".
But it was not. It was real. And Ishita had the proof in her hands.
When Ruhi's custody case was reopened, they had all stood together. Her daughter in her arms, her husband besides her, her whole family behind them, they had finally won the case. Two days back they had all hugged each other with tears of joy! Ruhi was not going anywhere. Her family was safe and complete again. She was happy. HE was happy too. Well it had seemed to her that he was.
But...apparently he wasn't.
Why?
Incomprehension all over her face, Ishita looked into nothingness.
Raman was not happy with her...that would explain why he was so distant and so dull these past two days.
But why?
She loved him so much. And she had never let an opportunity went by without showing him how much she cared for him. He knew he could count on her, open up to her...
If only he would tell her where she had been lacking...
Raman!!
His name escaped her lips as a painful whisper as she looked down at the papers on the table.
It was only then that she noticed the small orange envelope. Her name was written on it.
Raavan kumar's handwriting!
She would recognize it anytime.
She ripped it opened and read with tears pricking her eyes. As she went through the letter, her anger started mounting.
- Mihir! Where is your brother?
She listened as Mihir stuttered on the phone and answered her back.
Within minutes she was in her car heading for the airport, fuming inwardly
- Mr Raman Kumar Bhalla, you are not going away with this one!!
The last passengers were being called upon to board the plane. The Mumbai flight was to take off.
With a heavy heart Raman was marching towards the entrance when he felt his arm being yanked from behind. As he turned around, he came face to face with his wife. Without notice she started beating him up with the paper which she was holding in her right hand. They were at the airport with hundreds of people around and she was creating a scene. Flabbergasted, trying to escape her blows, he asked:
- What happened? Maar kyun rahi ho?
His question had her fuming more than calming her down. She pulled him to her only to push him away unceremoniously.
- You ruthless man! You...Heartless...Coward...How dare you! Kya hua? How dare you send me the divorce papers? Who will bear you if you leave me? You will end up all alone. Who can bear such a rude, moody, complicated and tantrum throwing man like you?
- Nobody!
...
- This is why I am leaving...
He never completed his sentence as he felt her palm on his lips.
- Not a single word Raman. I read your letter. How can you even think that I would be better off without you? How can you say that you gave only sorrows and pain to me? Peek inside my heart Raman and you will know what you have given me, what you mean to me...
...
- Why are you breaking my heart? Why are you leaving me? What will I do without you? Can't you see I love you? Is it not evident in my eyes Raman?
She had said it finally.
Without any fuss, without any hesitation.
She pulled her hand away from his lips and stared at him for some moments before reiterating what she had said a minute ago as he listened with his breathing hitched.
- I love you Raman. I LOVE YOU. Mein apni beti aur pati ke bina nahin reh sakti.
- Tumhe chod kar kahin nahin jaa raha houn...paagal madrassan.
As he pulled her to him, he finally muttered what he had been trying to voice out for weeks.
- I love you too.
He felt her arms snaking around him. With her palms on his back and her chin on his shoulders, she kept squeezing him to her.
Raman had never felt so light and so...blessed.
He finally understood how it felt really to be in love and to get that love back.
The woman he had fallen in love, loved him with equal passion and intensity.
The happiness inside him manifested outside by itself in the form of a huge smile. He snuggled further to her, tightening his grip around her, never to let go.
Love has finally conquered!
