T H E E V O C A T I O N

A small lane, with grey walls stained with a greener tint of moss and growths. Suddenly, some remains of an old palatial building over the right corner were seen. I ran towards it, while brushing through the unhygienic boundaries.

The bricks there were monochromatic. I could see no colour, save the green tint of the fungi spread in substantial parts of the floor. Through a crevice, I spotted a some light. White in colour. I turned towards the door and heard a soft song playing in the room. To my delight, the door was kept ajar and I quietly tip toed in, not intending to disturb the musician.
I traced the light source to a chandelier, hanging on the ceiling. Beneath it, was seated a lady, dressed in yellow. A beautiful flowing dress, from her fragile neck to the floor. I frowned, for the face of the enchanting mystery wasn't visible.

Out of nowhere, she got up, with her back against me and exited the room through the door at a far corner. My heart wanted to follow her but mind didn't comply. My heart was in my mouth, it was palpitating so fast. There was silence yet again. I could see her form against the window now. And in a captivating moment, she turned towards me and I spotted her mystified face through the bars of the rusty window. Her smile etched itself into my memory. It was the most perfect, delicate and the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.

...

Tring... Tring... Tring...

The darn alarm clock started ringing. Sweaty, weary & tired, I woke up. Yet again, my dream had ended at the exact same moment as in the past few months. I looked at myself in a mirror. Eyes, red. Hair, untidy. And throat was dry. After a quick gulp of water, I removed my canvas, paints & brushes. With them, tumbled a sea of pictures from the inside of the cupboard. There were 50 of them, my failed attempts to capture my memory. With a renewed vigour, I started painting again. Somehow, I couldn't bring down on paper, that smile of hers. Those eyes couldn't be reproduced, which had such depth in them, as a deep valley with no end. That wavy, yellow dress couldn't be painted, which flowed like a river of lemon clouds and milk.

It was Eight by now, three hours since I'd begun my expedition. Sharp at quarter past eight entered my old faithful servant, carrying my black coffee.
"Did you get it Baba?", He asked me. Dejectedly, I hung my head. He too, look troubled. After gathering some courage and hesitantly, he spoke up -
"Baba, are you alright? Your health is deteriorating day by day. Just look at you, you've grown so thin, these dark circles beneath the eyes, these cracking dark lips. Should I call Memsaab?"

"Huh! No. I'm okay Kaka. Mom will unnecessarily come here and create chaos out of nothing."

But enough was enough. I was determined to catch this lady one day. I tried to recall if I'd met such a lady in reality. If I'd really seen those beautiful eyes and that yellow dress. I pressurised my mind but in vain.

...

In no time, I was in my gallery, conducting a workshop.
"Alright students! Shall we do something different today?"
The class chimed in enthusiasm and determination.

"Well then! Here's a task for you. Today, I shall not tell you what you've to do. You're free to paint any face you want you. It could be your mother's, your friend's or that of any random passerby. Bring out the artist in you and just materialise your thought on canvas. Are we ready?"

The class boomed in affirmation and there was a loud clatter of wooden boards and soft rustle of brushes.

I too, began painting my dream, my lady. Suddenly, my nerves jerked as I felt her around. For the first time in real dimensions, I'd sensed her presence. I leaped to the window and amidst the heavy crowd of passersby, I saw her. In a glimpse, I saw that face again. Abandoning everything, I ran behind her. I was on the pavement, pushing through everyone to see my beauty. My heart was beating extremely fast, as if in the next moment it would tear my chest and fall out. I ran till the signal. Finally, just a few inches away from her. I extended my arm to touch her but she moved ahead to cross the road. A fleet of buzzing vehicles came between us. Through the cars, I could see her escaping form. Her wavy yellow dress and her black flowing curly hair. My mind could blast in the next second, if I wouldn't see her.

I felt her stop. And just as at the window, she turned at me. I gasped to see her face yet again. Those...
In my next blink, ... BANGG!

A car had run over her, just a microsecond after I'd seen her face. My heart stopped in a deafening scream that I uttered.
And then, blank. My head was pounding in pain. Blurry images, first of my students, then some blue bed and finally, I could clearly see the sobbing form of my dear servant. I opened my eyes heavily.

...

A week after

Doctors say that it had been a nervous breakdown. My blood pressure had shot up tremendously and I had passed out. But ask me, it was the shock of seeing that lady run over. On asking my students, they told that there had been no accident whatsoever. I had merely fainted on the pavement outside my gallery, fifty metres away from the signal.

It was difficult but I'd started accepting that I'd gone crazy. I was illusionary, hallucinating every now and then. But then, the root cause prevailed. Who was she? Why was she ruining my life, my sleep, my mind. Had I met her in real?

Lying on my bed that day, I made a genuine attempt to recall that face that was so patched on my memory. I named everyone who I knew, I'd seen or just casually encountered. No, but not that lady. The thought that I'd just missed her by a whisker the last time was maddening me.

Although advised bed rest for a month, I sneaked out of my house at around 5.30 am. The breath of fresh air hit my moist face as I strolled on the beach. It was pitch dark still and the rhythmic rise and fall of waves soothed my strained nerves. I walked for a while and then exhausted from the exertion, I sat down on the sand. I felt calm and peaceful. The horizon turned red as the Sun signalled it's moment of arrival. The moon faded away with the approaching dawn.

And then, it happened. With every inch of the rising Sun, she became clearer and clearer. She was walking towards me. My heartbeat was on the rise and it thumped against my weak chest. She came closer and closer and sat a few inches away from me. I couldn't speak, her raw beauty had paralysed me. I was incapable of reacting or talking. The chase was over, she was here, right beside me. I was wondering, what next. It was just a moment that I withdrawed my eyes from her and whoop!

As I turned to that spot again, she was gone. In the distance, I could see her shadow trotting away. I got up, literally running. The sand didn't allow me to pick up speed. Every effort I made to move faster ended in my legs thrusting deeper into the sand. Heavily breathing and feeling rather suffocated, I ran up to the outskirts of the beach. The sand had given way to the rocks. Hardly able to walk, I managed to come out on the road. I saw her get into an autorickshaw. I caught another from the stand and followed her in hot pursuit.

After about a kilometre, she stopped the auto. It looked like a construction site which was empty in the early morning. I stumbled out of the auto. She was standing across the road, stretching her arms out to me. I realised it was a 'Now or Never' situation and without thinking twice. I ran up to her but ...

Something hit me hard. I fell down with a thud. The world was spinning around me. I could feel the lady laugh in the distance. A soft laughter, like the soft music of the dream. And then, silence.

...

I woke up dizzy.
Beep. Beep. Beep

The sound of the pulse machine was disturbing the silence. Faded images of two, no, three people appeared. One was an old woman, crying. Another was an old man, looking worried. And third was a coat cladded young man, maybe a doctor. I looked around, puzzled. My head hurt, I touched my forehead to feel a bandage. My leg too, was fractured. I was unable to recall anything.

"Son..?", She asked.
Her face looked familiar but I couldn't understand who she was. Why was she calling me Son?

I turned at the window, highly confused. I couldn't remember anything. Who was I? Where was I? And why?
As I looked out of the window, I saw a lady. Yes, I could remember, that same lady. In her yellow dress, she was smiling at me. Slowly, her image faded away, into thin air and I could no longer see her. She was gone, probably forever.

***

The human mind is the most complicated machine we've ever come across. Although scientists have a control over most of it's theories, there are still some mysteries which lie undeciphered. And one of them is the coding of faces. It's still unknown how our brain manages to capture and recollect so many faces that we see and how some of them are bounced back by the subconscious. For this same reason, we feel sometimes that we've seen people before, although it's a true fact that we're meeting them for the first time.
The human brain is the most complicated of everything we've seen.

A very interesting os Mahi. It's just out of the box concept and really enjoyed reading it. Human mind is an interesting thing isn't it? 😉
At first I thought it was supernatural, that maybe he was seeing deads or something 😆 but was surprised in the end as you related it with science. Well this was a cliffhanger and I am really interested to know what happened next but I guess this is the end. 😆
An obscure os but brilliant way of phrasing the situations. Keep writing more such pieces! And thank you for pm,
Sam
