P.s.Very very special thanks to dearest Nyna (Nynaeve) for showing me this treasure island!

PYRE

People said his heart knew no fear, the daring commander of Garhwal, Vikrant Singh Chauhan. He fought like his home was where the battlefield was... He was cruel towards his foes, loyal to his king. His body bore the proud adornments, the scars that he had won from various opponents, over the years he had served the Royal family.

"Don't you ever fear of death,Vikrant?" His reflection on the mirror often questioned him,"Your sword caused many hearts to stop beating, many hopeful eyes to lost their gleam, many wives to lose their right on vermillion forever! You filled them with anguish, set their world on fire! You've wails, bloodbath and curses behind you... Won't they chase you to the Hell, when you're going to die ?"

"Why to cower, why to be shy
From my dark angel,as she seems..
Too keen to evade, back to the sky!
Her icy lips don't touch mine even in dreams,
Leaving me alone in glory, all high and dry!"

He recited cynically as he sipped the amber coloured liquid from goblet ... That colour reminded him why his existence was a living pyre... Those eyes...Those tantalising eyes...

And there were the eyes and there she stood... looking him through the mirror, like she could see his bare soul...

"Why're you here,Princess? You shouldn't be here at this odd hour... at least not on your wedding night!"He said in a nonchalant voice, masking his awestruck but ached expressions seeing Princess Mayurakshi in her crimson bridal attire and royal Rajput jewellery, looking breathtakingly beautiful...

"And you shouldn't mouth those wretched lines again!"Her amber eyes were brimming with pearl droplets, threatening to pour down any moment.

"Save those precious pearls for the farewell ,Princess! You're not supposed to cry before an ordinary soldier!"He turned from her, turned deaf and blind...

"You're heartless,Vikrant!"She lashed in despair... Why he can't react as a lover like he used to do once?

" How I wish I never had one? That stupid heart dared to thump for someone, betrayed by leaving my cage and never came back! That reminds me! You should go back, I think Prince Indrajeet is waiting for his new bride!" He felt every inch of his body caught in fire as he uttered those words. Life was very unfair sometimes. Why the love of his life couldn't be someone ordinary? Some village belle, whose world revolved around him and vice versa. Why heart got fixed on an "inamorato" who was almost like a mirage instead?Whereas whole world revolved around her and she was supposed to be the sunshine for all.

His soul had been imprinted by hers forever since their eyes met for the first time. He wasn't the only prey of this unquenchable love, yet they never sought their elixir, as shackles of royalty and loyalty kept them chained. Until...

One day Princess Mayurakshi's carriage had been attacked by a large group of bandits when she was returning from Chamoli,a neighbouring province and her maternal uncle's home. Vikrant saved her when all other soldiers was killed. He got injured and they both had to stay in the forest. That night princess became healer for her saviour.Under moonlit night, in front of fire, their all pent up emotions came out. Words were spoken that the ears yearned to hear... Steps were taken first time without any fear... Soul touched the soul... Eyes met the eyes... Bodies melted to become one...

His trance was broken by her scorned reply, " Husband! You know very well this marriage is nothing but a mere part of my father and Indrajeet 's pact!"

"He'll come to love you soon, I'm sure! And soon he'll be the King! Be rational Mayur!I don't have anything for you to give... no Kingdom... perhaps no love..."His voice was harsh as frantically attempted to put some sense into her. Only he knew how much he hated himself to lose the reign over his heart and desires that night. He had sinned... He broke the trust of his King and turned a traitor. He couldn't do more blunder and elope with the Princess as she had suggested before.

"One last drink? You can offer that at least!"she grabbed the goblet Vikrant was holding, added more liquid into it."You needn't to be tensed, this is the last time I'll meet you. And I'll be faithful too... More than you tried to be... Goodbye Vikrant!"She finished the drink, hugged him like never before, pecked his lips and left the room.

================================

Next day Vikrant met her again. Not only him, entire Garhwal had come to bid a teary farewell to their loving princess. But instead of palanquin she slept on a pyre ready to embrace flames...

Vikrant had a piece of parchment in his hand.

"Your Dark angel couldn't leave me...
As she knew I'm as faithful as her...
More than ever you could or would be!!!"

Mayurakshi had lied, yet kept her last promise...
