T H E F O U R T H D I M E N S I O N

The Ravenclaws made their way through the rusty gate. It creaked with a certain moan. A flock of bats flew past their heads, in an ominous occurrence. The mansion was grand, yet secluded. It had a peculiar heart sinking aura and a feeling of a different dimension.

Mr. Richard Ravenclaw felt an air of pride in owning the revered ancestral house and confidently walked into the building that stood magnificently in front of them. They were shown in by a Butler, Jones. He'd been acquainted with the Clemenson's Mansion, as it was called, since 20 years. The man showed slight signs of ageing, yet, he was quite energetic and agile with the luggage.
The Ravenclaws were a simple clan of aristocrats, until Richard took a fancy for old houses. After hunting and searching for about 40 days, which was too much for his patience, he settled for this ancient Mansion. Though warned of its ghastly past, he rubbished all rumours of super natural existences and moved in, the very next week. He had a pretty wife, Ms. Catherine Ravenclaw, a beautiful daughter, Susan and a set of naughty twin sons, Gilbert & Albert.
Susan blankly stared into the large walls. They somehow fascinated her. They were large and uncannily smooth. As soon as she set her foot in the enormous hall, she sensed something that she couldn't see. The presence of something not earthly, the presence of a wandering soul. She was a quiet and calm girl otherwise. Hence, she chose not to speak about it. She was on the verge of 24 but was too mature for her age. Her thoughts and opinions often went unnoticed and unheard-of. Yet, she never complained or grumbled. The rooms were alloted. Mr & Mrs. Ravenclaw decided to take the largest room on the ground floor. The twins and Susan were on the first floor, in two rooms along the same corridor.

The clock struck 8. It was supper time and the family assembled for the first time in the day and sat to dine. The food was silently served, eaten and cleared away at sharp 8.45. Everyone retired early today as they were heavily exhausted by the travel to the countryside.

The next morning, everyone woke up after a peaceful sleep. There were no signs of any evil spirit around, or else it would've haunted them in the night. Mr. Ravenclaw's eyes sparkled with surety and belief. He was seldom wrong with his decisions and he took pride in the fact. He peacefully read the Headlines in the newspaper which stated their shifting in to this ancestral house, as the smoke puffed out his pipe.

The next evening, the twins woke up to a profound degree of chaos in the house (It was their habitual routine to get up around evening and stay awake the whole night). The few members of the house were on such a grave mission that it felt the house itself shook and rumbled. On prodding the Butler, they realised that there was a party tonight, a rather forced one. Mrs. Ravenclaw's friends had come to know of their newest house and they were miffed with the fact that they hadn't been invited, which resulted in the announcement of a quick bash. Following which, everyone was running helter skelter in the preparations. Mrs. Ravenclaw was busy dressing up Susan. She feared that Susan might get expected suitors to see her tonight and she'd to look the best that she could. Susan wasn't fond of such events at all. She preferred solitude and peace. The hustle bustle and chattering of noisy women irked her deeply.
Yet, she stayed mum and quietly bore with her mother's blabber about materialistic property called 'looks'. In her opinion, looks didn't matter at all. It was the inner happiness that made ones face glow in eternal beauty. Alas, only if she bothered to dive deep into the souls of humanity!

Time slipped quickly and the guests started to arrive one by one, in the falling light. The twins were strictly asked to behave themselves thoroughly and that Mrs. Ravenclaw wouldn't tolerate any of their pranks pulled out in guests. After a round of drinks, Mr. Ravenclaw took the the spotlight and raised a toast to the new Mansion.

Entirely disinterested in the proceedings, Susan sat by the window, admiring the silver moonlight sparkling and playing amidst the flashy water of the fountain outside. She felt her family was vain for they never took time to admire the nature or appreciate it's marvellous beauty.
"What are you thinking, young lady?", Came a voice.
It was too shallow to be of a human. It was somewhat a hissing sound which resounded from the walls. Her pupils dilated in astonishment and her face went pale. But the next moment, she glanced upon the glinting faces of her brothers and sensed that it was one of their pranks. Still, she remained bewildered by those words.

The long long tables were laid in the magnanimous hall as everyone sat for supper. Susan took a corner seat, for she didn't want to be the sizzling subject of gossip. She spoke too little to be noticed by anyone. Even the lady seated beside her could scarcely discover her presence.

"The wine tastes too sweet, isn't it?", Came the same hissing sound. She accidentally dropped it on her dress, in the fearful moment of surprise. The people's gaze shifted to her as Mrs. Ravenclaw chided her for her careless act. It didn't go down very well with her for she didn't like to be reprimanded in public. Without much of argument, she rushed off to her room, to clean the mess. The clock struck 10 as she scrambled up the long staircase, with a slight tear stricken face. She lightly brushed off the wine off her smooth silk dress, deep purple in colour. The stain prevailed even after two thorough washes so she decided to change her gown. Besides, she couldn't move back into the gathering with a water streaked apprearance. Suddenly, her eyes fell onto the desk. It was empty and gleaming. With a slight worry, she moved to find her poetry. She'd worked hard upon it since a few weeks. Her drafts had been left behind by her in the afternoon on the table and she regretted not keeping it safe. A sudden urge of anger overtook her senses as she ran back to the party, to enquire of her writings. She pulled her mother aside and questioned
"Mother, where are my poems?"

Mrs. Ravenclaw was in for a bit of shock. The state she was in, had triggered instant mumbles in the crowd. Managing to keep up her smile, she asked her to go and change. But Susan was adamant to get her answers.
"Maybe I'd asked the Butler to clear them off", she admitted meekly. Her gaze became sterner as she ran back into her room.

"What a heckless mother she is!", She cried. Already, she wasn't valued much by her family and had no friends. She was as lonely as the Sun in the afternoon sky, as the moon in the night.
"They were really nice", came that familiar voice.
"Show up, will you!", She bellowed fearlessly.

In what seemed too extraordinary to describe in words, there came a flashing stroke of light. Through the highly illuminated walls, emerged a form. A spirit it was, without a body. The glaze slowly reduced to a sparkling young man.

He held her hands and went down on his feet, like a gentleman and kissed them.
He strode ahead and waved his hand over the table. Mysteriously, the drafts of scribbled poetry returned again and in the exact same fashion as she had left them that very afternoon.
"Who are you?", She mumbled in a lost tone.

"Beyond time I lie,
I can neither live, nor die
I'm a tale that cannot be told,
I'm the one to whom you behold"

"What are you saying? I cannot understand"

"I'm the one who you want to see,
Let your thoughts, my existence be"

She was smitten by his chivalry and his looks. He was the perfect outcome indeed, of her thoughts, the form of her dreams.

"I'm the reason of your gloom and glee,
Away from this world, will you with me, flee?"

He extended his hand and time stood still for her. She could vividly see her childhood, lost in loneliness. The burden of not being able to bring fame to her family. The condemnation of her imaginations and the pressure to lead a life she didn't want to. She was confident that her parents were soon going to marry her off to a man as worthless as them. That disregard for her feelings and thoughts had pinched her mind but she was never free to express it.That anger that had accumulated inside her made her want to leave everything behind. The clock stroke 12 and there was a click on the door latch. Someone was about to enter.

"I trust you, spirit. Whoever you are, whatever you be. But you must certainly be better than the stone hearted people of this land and soil. O beloved, let's run away from here. Let's move into the land which has no past, present or future."

She grabbed her hand and in an instant, they were sucked into the wall. The twins, upon entering the Room didn't find a trace of their sister. That was the last they had seen of Ms. Susan Ravenclaw.

Sometimes, things lie beyond the imaginations and understanding. Away from logic, is a land that has no time or space. The undefined room of existence is a nature's miracle which stretches ahead of human theories. It is, the Fourth Dimension.

A/N : This was a long pending shot. The setting is inspired by The Canterville Ghost, though the concept and the thought is totally different. I'm writing after a gap of nearly two months so please excuse me if it's not turned out very good. If you find it too sudden, kindly understand that I was bound to write an OS.

Cheers,
Mahi

Such a short and sweet OS! But you totally got me in first line! I seriously thought it was a different kind of a HP FF!
But yes, this was a lovely one! The end was a bit unpredictable, but sweet! Love how this ghost takes Susan Ravenclaw across the dimensions to a better world! <3
