T
he Deafening Silence

The faint sound of thunder resounded in the quiet valley where she stood, taking shelter under a large tree. She found it hard to tear her eyes away from the lake a foot away from her, mesmerized by the rain drops plopping into the water. Call it a moment of insanity or freedom, she found herself walking towards the lake and stopped at the very edge. She peered in and saw her own reflection staring back at her.

Her eyes, a light brown, almost looked orange among the withering autumn leaves, now stuck to the ground, soaking wet. She felt a tear slide down her cheek and watched the reflection in the lake remain emotionless as it had been several minutes ago. Many Christmases, many Halloweens and many Thanksgivings had gone by. Seasons had went and gone, but she was still there, stuck in the past.

The rain pounded against the ground, quickening, finishing off what it had started. She bowed her head, allowing the rain to cleanse her mind of the ghosts of her past.

"I've told you over and over how much I hate it when you're sad." She spun around, a bright smile appearing on her otherwise sullen face.

"You're back!" She gasped, eyes brimming with unshed tears. She ran over to him and threw her arms around his wide neck. "I thought you'd never come back."

"Sweetheart, I'm always with you." He whispered, patting her back gently. He pulled away and grabbed her hand, caressing her fingers with his thumb. She closed her eyes finally feeling at peace.

"I dread the start of winter. I'll miss these leaves, the rain. I'll miss you." She muttered. "You'll be gone. I don't want you to go away." She tightened her fingers around his hand and he squeezed, offering her comfort.

"I have to. I have to go away. For you." His words tore through her heart, causing her to double over in pain. She fell down onto her knees and shook her head vigorously.

"No, please. Please don't go away. I need you." She begged. He leaned down and gathered her in his arms. He pulled her back, allowing them both to lean against the tree behind them. She lay her head over his chest and listened to the strong beat of his heart.

"Do you remember, yesterday, when I told you to stay in your room?" He asked, pressing a kiss to her wet head. She merely nodded in response. "Why didn't you listen then? It's pouring. You're so wet now."

"Sometimes, when you're not around, I wonder if you even exist. I felt scared, like I was losing you. I needed to come out and experience this again. I needed to see you again." She replied, her voice cracking with the withheld emotions desperate to be let out.

"You need to trust me. You need to listen to me. Please." He said rubbing his hand up and down her arm gently. "Will you do that for me from now on?" She nodded and he smiled, satisfied with her answer.

The rain began to stop as it mellowed down to a slight drizzle. The sky began to clear, the greyness slowly fading away. His grip on her loosened and she relaxed instead of tensing. She tiled her face upwards, towards the sky and watched as the clouds began to move aside, revealing a dazzling rainbow. A smile broke out on her face once again and she closed her eyes, basking in the warmth of the sun on her face.

"Keep smiling like that." He said to her brushing his lips against her cheek softly. Gently turning her face, he pressed his lips to hers and she knew it was the end. It was goodbye and it hurt but she felt an odd sense of peace.

"Do you have any idea how worried I have been?" A voice snapped from afar. She turned her head and found herself staring into a pair of light green eyes. Her psychologist. "Just when I think things are starting to look up, you go and - "

"They are." She interrupted. "I had some unfinished business. I'm ready to head back." She stood up, and turned around to stare at the tree once more. She touched her lips and felt another tear slide down her cheek. "He's gone. He was never here." She whispered.

"I'm glad to hear you're acknowledging your hallucinations now." The doctor stated, putting his hand on her shoulder. "He really is gone. He's been gone for almost three years now. It's time to move on."

She nodded, motioning for him to lead the way. He began to walk away and she watched his back for a moment before taking a look around the valley one last time. Finally, she turned her back on the tree that held so many memories. As she walked away for good, she felt the tight grip her hallucinations and her mental disorder had on her give away. She finally felt in control. She felt alive.

Buried Passages

The chill in the air whooshed through Daniel Stone the instant he set foot out of his car. Closing the door, he tugged the lapels of his coat together with one hand and looked skyward.

An overall picture of gloom stared him in the face. But he knew, hidden behind those generously voluptuous gray clouds were the many shades of blue that composed the seamless sky.

How fitting, he mused and heard his mother's words echo loudly in his head.

"Understand that darkness can be a place of silent nurturance, Danny. Embrace it. Plough through it. Go beyond it. You'll find that the light you seek is just out of reach a little ways ahead."

The memory of her soothing, melodious voice sent a pang of sadness through him. His mind conjured up the last image he had of her and a stinging sensation throbbed behind his eyes.

Blinking away the feeling, he walked upon the long carpet of copper autumn leaves, listening to the way they crunched underfoot.

"Sense more than just the gloominess. Think beyond loss and death. See beyond the seasons. Something awaits beneath all this, Danny. This is only the end of the beginning. Remember that."

"I remember, Mom" Daniel muttered in response to the remembered words. "And you were right," he conceded aloud.

A sudden gust of wind hit and the leaves on the ground fluttered about. Others from the surrounding trees quivered its way to the ground. And then all movement stopped, except for the disorder his own steps caused.

Passing, precious, poignant. The words bouncing around in his head brought forth more memories of that long ago conversation.

"Nothing remains forever. There tends to be a fleeting nature to most things."

The words echoed in his mind as he came to stand before his parent's gravestones.

"I miss you, Mom and Dad," he said making his voice carry in the otherwise quiet cemetery.

He then crouched low and placed the flowers he brought down. He spent a few moments to give his respects and share a few things. Then, he turned and headed towards his bench. Well, the bench he usually sat on.

Taking a seat, he allowed himself to get lost in the silence. A silence that took him back in time to this very place.

***

Ten years earlier...

"I thought we were heading straight home, Mom?" Daniel asked.

"I'm glad to hear you still consider our place home, Danny" Sydney Stone said grimly. Reminding him without words, just how much of a distance he'd created between them.

"I'm sorry" he replied knowing exactly how inadequate that was.

He'd caused her lots of grief in his teen years. Unable to deal with the aftermath of a car crash that had taken his father's life, Daniel had acted out. The sudden loss of the man he idolized had done a number on him. He'd struggled to get passed it. His mother had tried to help. But in the end, getting away had been the answer.

He'd left town, choosing a university miles away from home and staying there to work once he'd graduated. He'd created his whole life away from the place that brought forth such painful memories.

But as he looked at his mother's profile now, he wondered for the first time, if he'd made a mistake. She didn't look like the strong, steady woman he remembered.

Instead, she looked tired. She'd lost a significant amount of weight. Her hair was a lot shorter. And she looked very vulnerable, almost fragile.

"Mom, is everything okay?" he asked truly concerned for her.

She glanced at him and smiled weakly as she made a turn. He glanced forward and recognized immediately where they were heading.

She was taking him to his father's grave. He hadn't been there since the funeral.

"Mom!" he protested staring towards the road.

"Please, Danny. I...we need to go there" she said quietly.

Something in her voice had him straightening and biting back a retort. This wasn't just a weak attempt to make him face what he'd run from. Something was up and he hated that he couldn't read his mother enough to know what.

It was in that moment he truly felt the void he'd left between them. Sure they'd kept in touch. But more often than not he'd kept their conversations short. Talking to her reminded him of all that they'd lost. He loved her. He did. But along the way, his studies and career became his priorities. With the distance, it hadn't been hard to grow apart and keep it that way.

His mother parked the car and got out without a word. He followed suit. Both of them fastening their coats against the chilly autumn weather.

She led them down a path covered by dry crusty leaves. And just when he thought she would lead him straight to the gravesite, she headed towards a bench and sat down.

He took a seat beside her and stared ahead at the mess that was this season.

He then tilted his head in his mother's direction.

"You okay?" he asked for lack of a better start.

She looked up and met his eyes. He noticed her watery eyes.

"Mom, what's wrong?" he slid closer and put his arm on her shoulder.

"What do you think of this season?" his mother asked randomly.

"What?" he asked, the question coming out of left field.

"When you think of autumn or the start of winter, what comes to mind?" she asked again.

"Mom" he said shaking his head. What on earth was she on about?

"Just answer the question, Danny. I'll explain in a minute" she said patting his cheek.

The gesture caught him by surprise. She hadn't done that since before his father died. And probably only because he'd made himself unapproachable.

"I don't know, Mom. I haven't really thought about it" he told her honestly.

"Then take a moment to think about it and tell me" she said determinedly.

He sighed.

"Alright, let's see. Fall. I guess I think about the end of summer exuberance. The end of holidays or vacation. For some it's the time to go back to school. Shorter days, colder nights, a sort of gloomy mood befalls the season. It's messy. And generally it feels as though we're closer to the end." He said the first things that popped into his head.

"On the surface, I suppose, that's how it appears" his mother replied with a nod.

Daniel was lost.

"Mom, what's this about?" he asked.

"Maybe this season is about more" she said and looked somewhere to the far distance, deep in thought. "Maybe you need to see all the possibilities planted to bear fruit in some season yet to come."

He furrowed his eyebrows unable to understand what this conversation was leading to.

"Maybe it's about more than the end. Maybe it's about silently seeking new life."

"O-kay..." he replied unsure what to say.

"You don't have a woman in your life" she said suddenly.

Daniel's head was spinning at the jump in topics. He shook his head.

"Geez, Mom. Not again. I told you I have no intention of..."

"Ever marrying" she finished and looked at him sadly.

"You need to face your demons, Danny. You need to realize that nothing remains forever. There tends to be a fleeting nature to most things. Son, we all die one day. But the important thing is to make sure you live it fully till that day. I don't regret loving your father. Yes, it was painful to lose him. Yes, I still grieve for the loss. But I have the pleasure of knowing I got to share my life with such a wonderful man for however long I could..." her voice cracked.

Daniel felt a lump form in his throat. He didn't know what to say.

After a long pause, "I'm dying, Daniel" she said calmly.

It took a moment for the words to register but when it did, his first instinct was to deny any such thing. His mother was fine.

"No" he said

"Yes, I'm sorry," a tear slipped down her cheek. "There is nothing they can do"

"What do you have? We'll find doctors! We'll see specialists. You're not d-dying..." he stuttered frantically.

"I have cancer. It's bad. I've seen specialists. I've done treatment. And I'm not going to continue with the treatments"

"What!? No!"

"There is no cure for me. I can only potentially delay my death. But, I can't live the remainder of my days cooped up in a hospital room vomiting and losing all my hair. I refuse to end my life that way. I want...I want to spend the remainder of my time at home. Where my heart is. Where the memories of my beloved husband are and where I can spend time with my son" his mother looked at him with a strength and determination he'd never seen before.

He closed his eyes against the stinging behind them. He had this overwhelming urge to let out a scream. Lose another parent? He didn't even recover fully from losing one!

"I want you to take a good look at your life, Danny" she continued.

He opened his eyes and met her clear gaze. She wiped away the wetness at her cheeks.

"I don't want to die knowing you're going to live the rest of your life alone, neck deep in work. A career is important, yes, but your life will never be complete without someone to share it with. Someone who you'll love and laugh with. Someone who will hold you and cry with you... "

He shook his head, still reeling from the news. His mother, the one he'd spent a better part of his life far from, was dying. And it sounded as though he couldn't fix it.

Again, he was helpless in the face of fate's plans. He grimaced as images of his father's body flashed before his eyes. Images he'd tried to keep at bay.

"I know you saw a lot of darkness in your life when you lost your father. For a teenager that was a harsh reality to face. But, understand that darkness can be a place of silent nurturance, Danny. Embrace it. Plough through it. Go beyond it. You'll find that the light you seek is just out of reach a little ways ahead."

Oh, God! The tears he'd been trying to hold back finally spilled over. And he growled aloud at the unfairness of it all! He didn't want to lose his mother!

True to her strong and steady self, she put her arms around him. Comforting him when really he should be comforting her. But she seemed to have accepted her fate. And he, well he didn't think he could ever possibly accept this.

He buried his face in her shoulder and hugged her.

What had he ever done for her? The thought caused more grief.

"I'm sorry, Mom. I'm so sorry. All that time lost...I wish..." his voice choked as he leaned back. "I wish I could've been a better son to you"

She smiled and patted his cheek, wiping his tears in the process. "I'm proud of everything that you are, Danny. Don't you ever doubt that! All I've ever wanted as a mother is for you to be happy. To be who you are and be the best at it. Whether that happens while you're right beside me or far away from me is irrelevant. You've done well for yourself, Son. I'm proud...your father will be proud of you."

Daniel sat up, faced forward, and hugged his mother close to his side. Maybe hoping if he hung on tight enough, she wouldn't leave.

In trying to recover from losing one parent he'd essentially lost the other when he'd left. He'd missed way too much of her life. And now that life was slipping away.

"I still wish I'd spent more time with you over the years..." he said.

"I know" she replied, nodding. "But it is what it is. No point holding onto what's already done," she said.

They both sat in comfortable silence. Then, after several minutes,

"You know, this season's gained a new appeal for me," his mother began bending down to lift up a copper colored leaf. "We may have lost the exuberance of the summer. But, perhaps autumn and winter is a time of reverence and perseverance. A time for slow, steady growth. A time to reflect, accept, and let go. Because soon it'll all begin again"

She handed him the leaf and he twirled the stem between his fingers. Taking note of the various colors upon it. His mother leaned on his shoulder but gestured towards the sky or maybe the open space before them.

"Sense more than just the gloominess. Think beyond loss and death. See beyond the seasons. Something awaits beneath all this, Danny. This is only the end of the beginning. Remember that. You change your thinking, you can change your experience."

He nodded. And for the first time, he reflected on his life. Realized there was so much he should've done. But also knew that he couldn't change any of what has passed. But the future? He could change that. He could make sure that his mother wore a smile for the rest of her life. And maybe he could figure out a way to move forward too.

His mother lifted her head and gave him a pointed look.

"Find what I had with your father. I promise you won't regret it" she said brightly. "The beauty still remains in the silhouette of a leafless tree, Danny. I may not be around much longer but I'll always be here." She tapped his heart and then met his gaze steadily, "in your heart and in your memories. Don't think because some things end or things feel like their falling apart that that's the end of the world. Life is like a fruit in the winter, no one would think it'll blossom again one day. But it will..."

***

And it did, Daniel thought with a smile.

His life had changed a lot since that one conversation with his mother. But the most important of all was that he'd been there for her. He'd shared laughter with her. Had shed many tears for them both. They'd created everlasting memories. And he'd supported her all the way through to the end.

He missed her tremendously. But he consoled himself that she was in a better place. That she wasn't far at all. How could she be when he felt her close just by being home?

She lived in his heart.

She was there in all his memories

And he saw her in...

"Guess who" a singsong voice sounded from close behind him as little hands covered his eyes.

He grinned. He had a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving and he'd be forever grateful for having been blessed with the best mother in the world.

Thanks, Mom! You're here in the very essence of my life, he said silently.

"Heavens? Who could it possibly be" he said in mock seriousness.

"Daddy, it's me. Your Sydney" his daughter ran around from behind and stood before him giggling.

"Oh you got me" he said tickling her then hoisting her up into his lap.

"Sorry we're late" the sweet voice of his wife, Abby, reached him a second before she slid onto the bench beside him and kissed his cheek. "Traffic" she told him then smiled lovingly at him.

"Mommy, I want to place the flowers" his daughter jumped off his lap, took the large bouquet of flowers in her small hands, hugging them to herself as she skipped ahead towards the gravestones.

Daniel stood and held his hand out for Abby. She took it and stood beside him. He smiled down at her then leaned in a pressed a kiss to her lips.

"I love you" he said because he just couldn't help himself then tugged her a step closer. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and they both followed their daughter.

Thank you, Mom! I wouldn't have made this step without you...

Just Another Day

It was indeed a beautiful day. As she walked to the place which she would love to call as a home', with hands plunged deep into the jacket pockets and the scarf that fluttered slowly with the gentle breeze, she felt unusually light. It's been five months and twenty-six days to be precise. She had taken the same route everyday. She had seen the seasons changing day by day. The trees in the park that she crossed daily showed how her different each day was. How different every moment is. But she knew well. All do not see it. There is no time for anyone. Everyone is in a hurry. But she was not. Her usual ten minute walk from the nearby bus station to the home was a regular routine. The one that gave a meaning for her once-empty life.

As she walked in, Mrs. Parker smiled behind the reception desk. When she smiled, her eyes go hidden behind her chubby cheeks. "Good morning dear..." She waved as she came closer. "Morning Mrs. Parker, how's your day?"

"Oh, it's great. And what's not there it to be so?" she winked friendly.

Of course, the one thing that she had learnt in past few months was this very important secret of life. What's not there around us? Everything is around us; we just need to look for it with a right mind. And not everyone is blessed with a mind that thinks in the right way. And she lived with that truth everyday.

She walked closer to the room. It was a warm bedroom with a bed that was closer to the wall, and faced the window which was now open. The bed was neatly arranged with a white bed sheet sprinkled with yellow polka dots. The side table had a flower vase with a single white dahlia. And there she was, sitting by the edge of the bed and allowing a mid-aged lady to adjust her gown. She sat with a little annoyance in her face.

She knocked at the door and took the attention of the members inside the room. "Ah, my dear. Right on time!" the lady who was helping the other, beamed and asked her to come in. "So Mrs. John, I would leave you at her care. Have a wonderful time. Would you like something more?"

"Yes..." the lady had a withered voice. "Please close the door when you go. And yes, did I tell you, that I don't like you?"

"Of course Mrs. John. You already told me thrice today. Ok I will leave. Good day."

The helper walked away giving an assuring smile. And then she turned back to her, Mrs. John. Aged 76. She had silver hair which was now neatly brushed by Angela, the one who just left now. She had a flowery gown that went down to her knees. Her skin was now wrinkled. And her face tells everyone that once she was a beauty.

"How are you Mrs. John?" She asked casually as she walked closer to the bed, placing her bag on the side table. "Oh, I am great. But do I know you?"

"Lord!! Where are my manners? Sorry, let me introduce myself. I am Naina. And we will be spending the whole day together, and maybe have some fun too."

"Thank you Ms... Um... Naina, right? Strange name, my love? Does it mean something?"

"yup.. it means Eyes."

"Eyes!!! Lovely!! And you do have a lovely pair of eyes. And I think I like you too. And maybe you are right; we may have some fun, isn't it?"

"Of course. So, did you have your breakfast?"

"Yeah..." her voice was weary. "I hate that oat meal. It's yuck. I want something... like barbecue..."

"Barbecue? Right in the morning? No... let's see by evening. Maybe we can have it."

"That's lovely my Little Eyes. And that lady who went away when you came in, she calls herself Angela. Like an Angel and she say I can't have a barbeque. Isn't it horrible?"

"Oh yes it is. But don't worry; I will make sure we have a barbeque today evening. But what would you like to do now?"

Mrs. John thinks hard for a while and looks out of the window. "The weather looks perfect. How about a walk to the garden?"

"That's a great idea. Let's go"

Naina wraps a shawl around the lady who was now as eager as a kid for a school trip. She helps the elder one to a wheelchair and gently pushes her out of the room. The corridor had some inmates walking or helped to walk or wheeled out by their individual care taker. St. Louis Home was indeed a home for people like Mrs. John.

The garden infront of the home was vast. It was away from the mad crowd. It was a silent and well kept part of the world. "Let's sit there." Mrs. John pointed at a place where there was a wooden bench too. Naina puts the brake on the wheels and made sure Mrs. John was in a good place; content and happy.

By the time Naina settled on the seat near to the wheelchair, Mrs. John had a faraway look. Naina followed her line of sight and reached the autumn leaves that was scattered around. It looked like the golden sprinkles on the green grass. This is one of her favorite seasons in the whole year. As someone had already said, "Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower". And it looks like Mrs. John too loved this season.

Naina bent down to pick a leaf that was close to her feet. The leaf felt so light when she twisted the twig. For a moment she missed Mrs. John's eyes on her face and the leaf; as she was slightly taken away from the present to the past.

A young girl was hopping up and down as she walked past the road that was covered with dried leaves. They were not dead leaves; instead they had a glow of its own, as if stating that even the end was beautiful. She could see a pair of open arms waiting for her as she hoped straight to her. She had a beautiful smile as she plucked the little girl from the ground. "Welcome home my Angel? How was your day?"

"Mumma... it was great... I just want to go back to school... It's just fun at school..."

"ohk... so you don't want to stay with your Mumma, huh? You didn't miss me?" It felt so cute when her Mumma acted to be upset. The little girl hugged her Mumma so tight and gave a loud kiss on her cheeks. "Aww... Mumma I missed you too..."

"What's it Little Eyes?" Naina was shaken back to the reality with Mrs. John's voice. "Oh nothing. It's just..."

"Please don't lie to me. There is something in your eyes. And no you can't rub it off. It's something deep... like sadness...Like you are missing something"

"Ummm, it's nothing. It's just..." she sighed and stopped for a while. "I just miss my Mumma."

"oh... it's ok to miss someone my dear. Even I too miss some people at times like..." She tries to think of some names. Naina knew it will be difficult for her to try to remember anything. "Well... I just miss them... what's there in names, right? I just miss them." She gave an unsure smile to Naina.

Naina gently pressed her palm assuring everything would be fine. She passed the leaf to Mrs. John who kept on looking at it for a while. "The fall is almost over Naina... It's soon going to be the start of winter. Do you like winter?"

"I love winter. All white and cold. I always wished to make a snowman. What about you?"

"I love the fall, Little Eyes. Just like this leaf. See, it's almost dead. It has fallen down. Still, see its color. No fallen leaf is like the other. Every another leaf that stays on the trees will have to fall down one day. And why should one just fall down as such? Why not leave with a style?"

Naina didn't have a reply. The elder one had said a life statement. Even in the counted last days, she wants to leave an impression. And what have she done till now?

When her Mumma passed away a year back, she had stopped everything around her. The once full-of-life book store that was owned by her Mumma was now in the verge of shut down. For the past one year, she had stepped in three or four time. Thanks to James, her Mumma's best friend, it was still open. She felt the book store so empty without her. She couldn't breathe inside that store that was once her sanctuary. The Naina who used to love to burry herself behind the books, was missing. It took more than four months for James and his family to persuade Naina to step out of her home. And once she stepped out, she could hardly breathe again. She felt like a fish taken out of a filled glass bowl. After a lot of talks she agreed to work in an old age home as a day caretaker of the inmates.

"You look lost again Little Eyes. And you don't seem to be too old to be lost."

Again Mrs. John took her by surprise. She looked at the leaf again before turning back to Naina. "Whatever it is, try to move ahead Naina. Else by the time you wake up, you will be in a wheelchair like this and maybe a girl called Big Eyes will be beside you." Her wrinkles smoothed when she laughed at her own jokes.

Soon the day passed to noon as they talked and laughed, at times on the popping jokes and at times on the statements that had a deeper meaning within. Soon Angela joined them and the smiling Mrs. John disappeared. "Here comes the Cruela. I am not sure who named her Angela. She loves to pull my gowns wherever she feels so. She makes me eat and acts as if she owns me."

"Oh that's so cruel." Naina acted surprised and winked at Angela. Mrs. John was speaking as if Angela couldn't hear her. "And did I tell you that I don't like you?"

"Of course Mrs. John." Angela said as she wheeled her into the room. Mrs. John insisted that Naina should feed her as she didn't want Cruela anywhere closer. Naina agreed and fed her with porridge and then the tablets. "Read me a book Little Eyes" And Naina took a book that she loved to hear. It had poems on the seasons. The verses where lovely. But somewhere close to the end, Naina was stopped by a hand. She looked up to the elder lady who was about to get sleepy.

"Little Eyes... your Mumma miss you too. And do you know why? It's because she can't see her girl anymore. You are her shadow. Come out to the light, and be her girl again." She paused to look at her side table and tried to reach the leaf on the side table. Naina helped her to get that leaf. "Remember Little Eyes, this fallen leaf may be a dead leaf, but when this one was outside, it was an autumn leaf. It had a glow on it. It was shining out in the sun. It was taking your breath away when you saw it. Go out... live again. You are no Mrs. John to pass this day. Live again. It's not just another day always..."

Naina could see her eyes getting droopy. She smiled at Naina. "Goodnight. Will you come tomorrow?"

"Yes I will. Goodnight Mrs. John."

She stayed till the elder lady slept and beyond that. She could still feel the words around her. For a moment she felt it was like her Mumma talking to her. She slowly grabbed her bag and walked out remembering those words. The leaf that was in her hand felt heavy. She let it fall onto the other leaves. When it hit the ground, she saw it glittering back in the sunshine.

She walked away slowly. She took a bus mechanically. She walked again. Soon she was infront of her bookstore again. She was feeling different. After a long time the store felt as her home again.

James was surprised as he saw Naina walking in. Jenny, his wife stopped him from going to her as Naina walked past them to the inner racks of books. She let her fingers glide through the rows of bound books. The smell of new bound books was haunting from the past. She entered a small cabin that used to be her Mumma's. The simple leather chair behind the desk was empty. But today she didn't feel it hollow. There was something different in the air. She sat facing the chair for a while. After sometime she felt a palm on her shoulder. It was James with Jenny.

"You ok Naina?"

"Actually, I am feeling fine; James. After a long time, I am feeling good."

"That's great Naina. Your Mumma will be peaceful now."

"I know that I took a lot of time. But now I will try to make it up. I will come back to the store every afternoon. Let's bring back the book store to its previous state. Mumma won't like it this way now. Isn't it?"

"Exactly my dear. And don't worry. We will do it together."

She smiled confidently this time. Jenny was too pleased. "So that means you will join us for the thanksgiving? Please Naina, after all, we are family."

It used to be an occasion for get-together when she was alive and this time Naina was not looking forward to it. But now she was ok with it. "of course, I will be there."

Jenny squealed in joy and gave her bear hug. Soon all three were back to their self as it used to be.

Next day morning Naina walked the same route and reached at Mrs. John's door. She knocked and Angela welcomed her in. Mrs. John was back in her grumpy state. "Did I tell you that I don't like you?"

"Of course Mrs. John. Ok I will leave you with her."

Naina walked in to the room placing the bag on the side table. "Good Morning Mrs. John."

"Morning. But do I know you?"

Naina smiled at her. For the past five months and twenty-seven days, their day started with the same question as Mrs. John didn't have the liberty to remember. For all these months, Naina and she had a new day. But yesterday was very different. It changed Naina's life forever. This fall was special for her.

Naina smiled at the old lady. "Sorry, Let me introduce myself. I am Naina. And today we will have some fun."

Before I Sleep

"Sarah, sit still, sweetheart," said Aniksha, as she deftly braided her daughter's hair. "You'll be perfectly in time for school." The four year old huffed. "Mummy, I'm going to be late!" "Of course not," said her mother, still smiling as she finished doing Sarah's hair. "How could you be late? It's your birthday, after all." "I know!" said the child happily. She skipped down the stairs, bag in hand, as Aniksha followed her, sending a smile to her in laws, who were having tea. "Bye, Grandma! Bye, Grandad!" Her grandparents smiled back, but they turned concerned eyes towards Aniksha, whose smile got even brighter. "Bye, guys," she said smoothly. "See you!" She followed her daughter out and helped her put the bag in the car.. "I want to do the seatbelt myself," Sarah announced. "I'm a big girl now." Aniksha smiled, let her daughter do the seatbelt wrong, then gently put it on herself. She listened to her daughter's chatter on the way. Her daughter was her life, even if Sarah didn't know it. Aniksha had dropped Sarah off to her class and was about to go , when her daughter caught her hand. "Mummy? Do you think Daddy could come today?" Aniksha's smile faltered, but only for a second. "Even if Daddy can't make it, you know he'll still see you, right?" Sarah nodded. "Of course." At the wheel now, Aniksha made no efforts to stop the tears she had been holding back all morning. Her vision blurred, but she didn't care if she had an accident, not right then. Thankfully- or unluckily- the road was clear, and Aniksha finally stopped at a church. The autumn leaves crunched under her feet as she made her way to the grave, and laid down the bouquet she'd brought. Kneeling down on the cold ground, she traced her fingers over the words etched onto cold marble.

" Forever Beloved.
Advik Mendes
1983-2012"

The tears came harder now. Because Aniksha Mendes had lost her husband in an unfortunate car accident twelve months ago...on the same day of their daughter's third birthday. The body had been so badly mangled that she'd hardly identified it.

She began talking then, to the slightly chilly winds that were characteristic of the start of winter.. The graveyard was deserted and silent. There were no birds around on any of the trees, which had begun to shed their leaves. "I miss you, Advik. Funny how it's been a year, isn't it? Because it doesn't seem a year to me. Does it feel like a year to you?" She brushed off a few yellowed leaves from the top of the grave. "Sarah's better now. She believes you'll be back some day. But you won't, will you? Will you?" She swiped her tears away with the sleeve of her coat. "God, but I love you, Advik. I can't stop. Please tell me you're okay. Something. Anything. Your mother sees you in her dreams all the time. Why won't you come in mine?" She choked on sobs as she continued to talk, in that soft voice. Advik had loved her voice.

When he'd asked her out on a date ayear later, he'd told her he'd fallen in love with her since the first time they'd talked. Half the college had been jealous of her when they'd made it official. Not because Advik belonged to one of the most influential families of the city, but also because it was obvious to everyone that he was serious about Aniksha. And without even realizing it, Aniksha had fallen in love with him, this man with the brutal honestly and the ability to make her laugh at the drop of a hat; the person who'd held her when she'd been at her most vulnerable, when her ailing mother had died, and she'd been orphaned. It had been the day he'd asked her to marry him. Not because her mother had passed, but because he didn't want her shutting herself from him.

Back at the house, Aniksha threw herself into work : making the preparations for Sarah's birthday party. In the evening, she kept up a constant stream of snacks and games with the twenty-odd children - Sarah and her friends, then clearing up after they'd left. So when she went to sleep at night, she was so exhausted that she fell asleep almost at once. But suddenly, she woke up. She sat up and blinked, trying to understand what it was that had woken her up. She glanced as Sarah, who was sleeping soundly beside her. And then she heard his voice in the darkness. "Ani?" Advik. The voice was low and hoarse, but he was the only one who called her that. She almost called out his name before remembering that no, Advik was dead, and he'd never call her again. "Who's there?" she said, voice quivering. She groped for her phone and switched it on, letting the light from the screen dimly illuminate the doorway, where a figure stood. Heart beating fast, she jumped out of bed. "Who is it?" She said sharply. The figure moved a step closer. "It's me. Advik."

"No," she said. "No. Advik is dead. Who are you?" But as she moved forward, she could see his face clearly. And this man had Advik's face. He was dressed in a dark tux, with a white shirt and tie. She'd helped him wear that, the day he'd died... "I'm sorry, Ani," said the man quietly. "I'm so sorry." Aniksha steeled herself. "I don't believe in ghosts, you know. So you can leave, with whatever scam you're pulling-" "Do you want me to go?" he said sadly. "I will leave at once if you want me to. I only came because I thought...I thought, maybe you still missed me, too..." An unknown terror gripped her. "You're dead. Aren't you?" "I'm not a ghost," he told her. "Yes, I have been dead...till now. You make me come alive." And because she was an idiot who didn't believe him, she reached out to touch him...and felt solid skin and bone beneath the clothes he was wearing. Advik had gone very still, his eyes closed, and she was reminded, absurdly, of a child dancing in the rain after years of drought... It was him. She knew it now, by some instinct, that it was him. "Oh, God," she whispered. "Oh, God, Advik- you're alive." His eyes flew open, and he - almost hesitantly- drew her to him. "Ani," he whispered, stroking her hair as though she was a porcelain doll. "My Ani.I missed you so much..." At that, she raised her head. "Why didn't you come?" she whispered. "Why didn't you tell us you were alive? Why did you take so long, Advik?" "I was too weak," he said, in a voice of shame. "And I was afraid of hurting you...hurting Sarah...I see her go to to school, every day. And I see you too, but you seemed happy." "I had to be," she whispered.

"Sarah needs me, Advik- she needs us. Come back to us. Stay. Whatever it is- don't go. Please. I love you." "I love you, too," he said quietly. "But I can't- mustn't stay, no matter how much I want to. I can stay the night, and that is all." Aniksha stared at him. "Advik, what is wrong?" She said, looking scared. "Is someone threatening you?" He smiled then, a little sadly. "No. Go to sleep, Ani.You need it." "But I want to talk..." She trailed off, her eyelids drooping. She was vaguely conscious of Advik lifting her on to the bed, then covering her. She felt his hand cover hers, and sleep claimed her again.

A dream. She had to have been dreaming. How else would she have seen Advik? He had gone by the time she woke up. As though he had never been there. She told herself it had all been a dream, but it didn't help the sinking feeling in her stomach. If it had been a dream, it had been a strikingly lucid one. There was no other alternative- ghosts did not exist. Even so, as the day progressed, she found herself often turning her head, wondering if she was being watched, even as she passed the church, with the woods behind. She had actually stopped the car and got out once. But there was nothing, except the wind and falling leaves.

But he came again, in the night. This time, it was the touch of his hand on her forehead that woke her. Her eyes flew open, knowing even as she scrambled to switch on the bedside lamp that it was Advik, and so he was, kneeling down beside her bed. For a long time, neither of them spoke. She was busy staring at his face, checking for differences or signs of fakery. But he was just the same. She touched his face. "I can't believe you're real." He mimicked her action, sliding his fingers down her cheek, making her blush. "Sometimes, I don't know if I am." "Why did you leave?" "I can't stay," he said, looking anguished. "Ani, you can't tell anyone about this...I can't meet them. And they'll think you're crazy." "Sarah-" "She deserves better," he said softly. "Better than me. So do you. Promise me you'll move on, Ani- promise me you'll find someone good enough-" She was shaking her head before he'd finished. "No. I'd rather have this, with you. Whatever you can give me." He looked torn, even as he kissed her, gently. "I love you," he murmured. "I wish I could give you more. Stay forever with you. I promised to keep you happy forever..and now, I'm giving you more sadness. I can't stay away from you, not anymore, no matter how it hurts-" "It pains you to be with me?" "Too much so." He looked into her eyes, and she saw he looked pale and haggard. "But I will come to you as long as you want me to."

"Then," she said,"I want you to keep coming to me."

He said nothing, simply brushing his lips over her forehead. He'd always been gentle with her, even when he'd been- "Why did it happen?" she whispered. "The accident?" His face was bleak. "I was driving too fast. I was late for Sarah's party..." She didn't want to know if he was a ghost or the figment of her imagination, or real.So she didn't ask how he'd survived. Whose body it was that she'd identified. "Go to sleep," he murmured. "I'll be here for a while." But not when she woke up, she realised. As she drifted off, she murmured, "Please come back...for however long you can...please stay..." There was no reply.

Yes, Aniksha was happier. Her friends and her in laws had noticed, and they spoke about it with each other. But Aniksha herself didn't realise it till one day, two weeks later, her mother in law took her aside to ask if she had met someone nice. Baffled, it had taken her a full minute to understand the question, whereupon she had shook her head vehemently, refuting the idea. But this gave Mrs Mendes the idea that Aniksha had now stepped out of mourning and therefore should be introduced to new people.

Mrs.Mendes urged her to at least go out with a few people. While she appreciated the sentiment, it sent her into knots. How could she tell Advik's mother that Advik met her every night? She would think Aniksha was insane. She herself had thought that she was .Didn't some people have split personalities? But Advik seemed real to her. The touch of his skin, the brush of his lips, the smell...everything felt real. Advik could not be dead. She'd seen the stark fear in his eyes every time she'd tried to ask him how he'd survived. Who'd saved him. Where he was living now. Several times, he'd told her that it hurt him to meet her. And that was the reason he didn't want to reveal himself to Sarah, or his parents. And every night, he'd ask if she wanted him to leave. Every night, she said no. But two weeks had passed, and Aniksha was already starting to feel what she had known she would- that just having Advik for a few hours were not enough, would never be. That night, she coerced him to lie down beside her as she talked about Sarah. Advik listened, lying quite still. He was always motionless when she spoke of their daughter, but she knew it was not because he didn't care- it was the opposite, because she had seen the naked pain in his eyes. Real pain, that he was missing out on Sarah. And not for the first time, she wondered if she ought to let him free. What good was it doing for both of them, this half life? But she couldn't - because she knew that if she did, he would never come to her again.

As the days passed, his mother kept setting her up with people. After a month of outright refusals, she finally agreed to met Rahul Sengupta, an NRI who worked in the States. She decided she'd jilt him after the date and prove to her mother in law that no, she was not interested and would never be in acquiring a husband. On the night of the date, she went to an open air restaurant with him. Contrary to her expectations, Rahul was not a bore. He was in fact quite funny, and he kept her laughing with his jokes. But he wasn't Advik. Every time she looked up at him, her heart panged as it realised it wasn't Advik. But it was when they were leaving, and Rahul had offered his coat for her to wear, when she got the strange feeling that she was being watched. As she turned, she saw him in the darkness, clearly silhouetted against the light of the darkness. She blinked, and he was gone, as though he had never been there. But still the back of her neck prickled. "What is it?" said Rahul. She forced herself to smile. "Nothing. I just thought I saw someone." The prickling on the back of her neck did not leave her, and she just knew that Advik was there. Watching her for God knows how long. What would he think? That night, it was on the tip of her tongue to ask him if he'd seen them, but he didn't let her. Advik didn't seem to be in the mood for talking.

He disrobed her entirely and worshipped her, body and soul, whispering again and again that he loved her, as Aniksha's heart broke. She could not speak, even as she clung to him, could not tell him anything besides the fact that she loved him, too. She would have stayed awake the entire night in the hopes that she might have been able to explain it all to him, but strangely, she found her eyelids drooping. She fought the strange sleepiness, but it was a losing battle, and she was defeated in a few minutes. When she awoke -a few minutes or a few hours later, she was not sure- he was gone. The moon still sparkled, bathing the room with the faint light, but he was gone. Gone before morning, which meant that he was gone now...lost forever. Something burst inside her. The desire to see if Advik was real. The impulse to hunt him down, scream at him and force him to come back. Perhaps it was insanity, but Aniksha dressed quickly, tied back her hair and made her way out of her house in the dead of night, at three o'clock. She drove down to the cemetery, fully intending to scream his name , over and over again till he replied. Till he came back to her. But then she heard it. A rustle of leaves, then a squeak. In the direction of the woods. She stopped dead. Was it possible, that he was here after all? Making as little noise as she could, she went in the direction of the sound. She didn't have to go far. On the ground, a few metres away from where the cemetery ended, a man was kneeling, bent over the body of a large animal. A bear? She climbed over the stile and tried to make her way to him, intending to ask if he'd seen Advik- but she tripped. She fell, sprawling in the cold ground, as he slowly looked up at her, and her blood chilled. No, there was no possibility of a mistake. The moonlight was bright here, and she could see it clearly : Advik, half kneeling, half standing, with eyes that glowed like burning coals, and large canines that were protruding out from his lips. Blood dribbled down his chin, staining that white shirt. She screamed. Within a second, he was next to her. Her eyes grew wide and her scream died out as she felt those large canines pierce her neck, drain her of blood.

She began to feel peaceful, otherwordly. As if she was floating in a dream world. Dimly, she knew she was dying. But it didn't matter. She was dying in his arms. Even if he was a monstrous creature now. "Advik..." she whispered, as her vision began to dim. It was that voice, weak and faint, which suddenly hit his brain. Advik let go of her, watching with dawning horror as she hit the ground, her eyes closed. "No..." He knelt down beside her and took her in his arms.

"No!"

Aniksha's eyes fluttered open, even as her body began to turn cold. "I love you, Advik." And then her eyes closed, and Advik held her in his arms as the last of her body heat dissipated away, as his had done...when he'd fallen off that cliff in his car.

It Has Always Been You

"Here is your order, Gentleman" She placed the tray on the table, alerting the guy who was engrossed on his mobile.

"Arjun?" She exclaimed in shocked disbelief unable to believe the scenario happening in front of her. Infact it is not any scene but very much real, the guy who had haunted her dreams so long was actually sitting on the chair, that too here in a foreign land. Is this another brutal game of destiny?

"Dr. Anya Gupta?? What a surprise! You are here? WOW! Can't believe this! What are you doing here as a waitress? And when did you come to San Francisco? Anya? Excuse me! Dr. Anya Gupta! Hellooo!" He finally completed his series of questions at one go; waving his both the hands to bring her out of abstraction.

"Heyyy! Arjun! Hi! I can't believe this! Be seated." Quickly coming back to earth, she indicated the chair while he gave her the 'Not before you' look.

After sitting on the chair opposite to him, Anya confirmed this definitely as one of the cruel game of destiny. How much she wanted to run away from him! As if Shimla was not enough, now in San Francisco? And this round table seating arrangement reminded her of something else.

Anya Gupta, a successful obstetrician always had only one weakness in her entire life and that is the man sitting opposite her. The distraction', she concluded about him years ago. As her first real crush in school, her world would start and end with Arjun Verma. Her thoughts went back to schooldays, where once she sat across from him in this same manner, and instead of food tray there was a chess board.

It was another rainy day in Shimla, and as usual their Physical Training hour was disrupted. However, their Trainer cheered the pupils with the announcement of indoor games. And chess was the main attraction that day. Whoever competed in the match returned to their places within minutes as the opponent was none other the National Level Chess Player Arjun, the pride of St. Peters school. The whole class gave up the idea and engrossed themselves in other indoor activities like table tennis. And that was when Anya decided to try her hand in the board game and adjusted the chair to sit while focusing on the eight-by-eight grid. She tactically moved every piece with full concentration and finally she did the unbelievable. She won the match by attacking the king, leaving no chance for Arjun, but to accept his defeat, leaving everyone in shock. But her happiness was not in winning the match but in those minutes she sat across him. It was an achievement for her. Only she knows how she managed to survive those forty five minutes having the whole class witnessing the nail biting match.

"Anya? Back to the earth?" Arjun snapped his fingers to get her attention.

"Sorry. What were you asking?" Anya replied, mentally pushing her thoughts aside.

"Ermm.. I asked you many things, first being what are you doing here in this restaurant, in this city? I thought you are a physician, in India." Arjun again asked in surprise.

"Uh.. Yes I am. Actually, this is my Aunt's restaurant and I am just helping her here."

"Cool! It is so pleasant to see you in SF." He replied sipping the coffee he ordered.

"And what are you doing here?" She asked him finally.

"Well, I was craving for some good Desi food and checked for the best Indian Restaurant in this locality and here I am."

"No. I meant your visit to US. Any work or holidaying?"

"I wish. But definitely, not for a vacation! I'm here for a business deal. It's kind of an amalgamation with an organization here. Hopefully it will be finalized before Halloween or at least by Thanksgiving public holidays, so that we will be able to export goods here for the Christmas vacations or early next year. So every day I'm attending two-three meetings with the firms here and numerous video-conferences with Dad to update the details. When required I travel to other places in California. And my team will do the rest of the work." He sighed explaining the structure of his work to Anya.

"Phew! That's really a tiring one. Totally a business man in action, eh?" She smiled.

"Yes, Totally. A busy man! And what about you, Doctor?"

"Actually, my cousin is expecting her first child and besides my Bua just went through a surgery. So I took three months off from the hospital and came here to take care of them. But, here they are not letting me do anything. My brother-in-law takes complete care of everything. So I came here to the restaurant today. I feel so bored without work."

"So, a Doctor is missing her action, eh?"

They spoke for another few minutes but soon the customers started to pour in and they had no other option but to end their conversation.

Later that night, sleep was the last thing to reach Anya. She had a tough time trying to forget her meet with Arjun. But it won't go at all. Her thoughts went down the memory lane remembering all those events happened in Shimla years ago. Anya sure had a crazy crush on Arjun since her 8th grade. Initially she rubbed it off as a teenage infatuation. As the years moved on, her infatuation started to grow into unknown feelings. Something made her realize that, Arjun is not just a mere crush anymore. Though she tried to focus on her studies and maintained the topper stature in class, He was always a distraction for her and she was totally obsessed with him. She remembered her saving all those school magazines which had his photographs, back in her Shimla bedroom. And those exam halls, she always looked forward to them just for a crazy reason. Having both their names starting with A, and being his previous number on roll, she always sat on the front bench. Like every time he used to copy the answers from her, she had absolutely no complaints in displaying the answer sheets. It felt good. Since Anya was a topper and Arjun being the school player, no one doubted them.

After getting into the medical school, she tried a lot to forget him and move on. She even tried dating the guys from the university but it never crossed more than one dinner date. She compared every guy with Arjun, thus the relationships ended up as quickly as it formed; it never lasted more than one week. Although he was always in her thoughts she never let the sadness of missing him take over her. After years' concentration, when she was all set in her career and fully focused in her job, she met him last year again in her friend's wedding.

After eight years of schooling, she had hoped all her crazy teenage hormones will be gone. But it became worst than before. After seeing him as the man he has become, she was left breathless. A young business tycoon managing his father's empire and getting the "Young Entrepreneur of the Year" was no joke. If all that was not enough, the destiny had to play a cunning game and make her meet him again today after a year. From Shimla to San Francisco! What an improvement!

In the next two weeks, Anya met Arjun more often than she would imagine. Since it was fall, the colour and fallen off autumn leaves, gave a beautiful vision to human eyes. It totally added a romantic touch to the whole atmosphere. Anya and Arjun bonded quickly and ended up visiting many places and beaches in the city together. Her favorite was the drive with him across the Golden Gate Bridge. They hung out a lot and he became a regular customer to her Aunt's restaurant, visiting it every evening after his work. Anya finally friend zoned her feelings and tried to maintain a composed stature around him.
---
"So, are you in a relationship? Do you have any boyfriend?" Arjun asked curiously looking at Anya, who was busy adding pepper to her soup.

"No. Why?" She asked and continued her work.

"Just asking" He shrugged his shoulders and concentrated on his food.

"And you?" She asked him with a curious look on her face as well.

"Me? I have many boyfriends." He laughed.

"I meant girl friend." She replied sternly not encouraging his lame joke.

"Nope."

"Liar. I won't buy it."

"Why so?"

"Umm... 'Cause you always had a huge girls' bandwagon back in school. Even in our class, girls were crazy about you." She replied, quickly regretting what she said.

"Really? Who were they?"

"That, I cannot tell you. It's a girls' secret. Well, umm.. forget it. Forget that we have ever discussed this."

"Ahh.. Now who is lying here?"

"Not me." She said and when he gave her a not convincing look, she had no other go but to reveal a little. "Ohkaayy.. There was this girl named Preeti who studied with us for only six months. She had a huge crush on you. Enough?"

"That South Indian girl? She was hot man. If I had known before..."

"Stop right there. She is married and a mother of 3 year old now. And that was just a stupid crush. Now, she might not even remember you."

Damn! Anya clearly knew that she was blabbering now. She has breached the rules of friendship of revealing someone's secret to someone without seeking that someone's permission. She remembered how Preeti, her bench mate and friend, had a big crush on Arjun. Since they were backbenchers, they had a fair chance to stare at him across the classroom without getting caught. They used to notice his every action. Like partners in crime! One second, wasn't it supposed to be Preeti who was doing the staring business? Fortunately, No! Preeti was that awakening factor in her life. When Preeti left the school coz of her father's infamous transfer, Anya realized that whatever she feels for Arjun cannot be considered as a crazy crush anymore. Mainly it was during the flood camp in Himachal Pradesh. St. Peters' final year students joined together to help the victims of the flood in the nearby villages. They volunteered in a medical camp and that is when she saw the other side of Arjun, the generous side, the aiding side, the humanitarian side. No one would have believed that this bratty son of one of the richest tycoons' in India would come out and serve the needy in the muddy and sloppy hill side, as if that hefty amount of donation by him wasn't the huge thing. How he shrugged it off as nothing and focused only on work, when he almost slipped in elevation point. From then, nothing could stop Anya. Slowly, day by day, Anya fell so deep for him. And now She knew that this time she fell even more for him and cannot retrieve out of this intense feeling. Maybe that is the reason; she couldn't come out this distraction.

"H-e-l-l-o-ooo" He stressed out every letter, waving his hands to get her attention.

"What do you think about all the time, doctor? I asked you something. Never mind! Half the time you live in your own off world" He shrugged, sipping the coffee.

"Uh Nothing. What did you ask?" She replied, fiddling with the hem of her shrug.

"I asked is there any other girl off the record? You know, the girls."

It's me idiot, Open your freaking eyes and see. "No. None! Don't consider yourself as some heartthrob please." She snapped and looked at the other side of restaurant.

"Damn!" Anya shrieked and lowered her head to hide herself, but the damage was already done.

"Anya, what are you doing here? Am I missing something?" Nisha, Anya's cousin asked curiously looking between Arjun and Anya.

"Hi!" Arjun greeted the pregnant woman and an American guy standing next to her.

"Arjun..She is Nisha Didi, my cousin and he is George, my brother-in-law. Didi and George, he is Arjun, my friend.."

"Boyfriend, Anya. I'm Anya's boyfriend, Arjun. Glad to meet you both. Please join us." He greeted with a warm smile leaving the other three totally shocked.

"Arjun, behave yourself! Didi, he is kidding. Please sit down." She ushered, giving an angry stare at Arjun.

"Oh come on! What's there to hide, sweetheart?"

"Oh My God! Is this true Anya?" Nisha exclaimed and looked at her husband to see the surprise reflecting on his face as well.

"There is nothing, didi. Arjun, I'll kill you." Anya muttered with anxiety clearly written on her face.

"Ouch. Why do I feel that I am on the process of getting dumped by my girlfriend? Do you see any storm coming?" Arjun, with a painful face asked George and Nisha, who were suppressing their laughs; totally enjoying the scene unfolding in front of them.

"What the hell! I'm warning you the last time Arjun." Anya gritted her teeth and glared at him.

"Yes. Stop bothering my sister, Mister. And what's the proof that you are her boyfriend? Tell us your love story and we will believe you then." Nisha was enjoying every single moment of this.
"Yeah. Tell us your story. Then we will decide." George too joined his wife.

"George, there is no story at all. And Arjun, Go to hell. I'm leaving." Anya stood up in her place, ready to leave when Arjun stopped by holding her hands.

"Wait, until I finish my story darling and then we shall leave together."Anya sat down in haste and looked totally disinterested on the prank he was playing.

"Dude, you haven't started the story yet to finish it!" Nisha corrected Arjun while Anya looked at the other side, not want to hear any cooked up stories.

"Well, actually we were classmates in school. She was that topper of our class, who would put down everyone in grades. And yeah, our Class Monitor and head girl too. Phew! Too many posts..."

"Stop! This sounds more like the description of Anya and less of any love story" Nisha complained, not liking the pace of the story.

"That's pregnant woman's mood swings for you. Don't mind." George added, beckoning Arjun to continue with his story.

"Oops! Okay. Where was I? Yes, she was the popular girl in school but a level headed one. Though she was around the class all time, I first noticed her closely when she came out and challenged to beat me in chess. Though, initially she moved her pieces totally in wrong directions, I couldn't see her lose the match, I couldn't afford to see her walking away from me. I dodged the game as much I could and when I saw her happy face at winning the match, it really paid off. That smile made my day."

Anya's heart thudded wildly in her chest as she waited to hear the rest of his shocking revelations. "Not only that. She was an angel in disguise for me in the examination halls and always a helping one. She is so selfless; she tended, cared, and embraced everyone in the "Evacuee Medical Camp" with love and affection. And that is when I realized, I haven't only totally fallen for her, but the respect I had for her grew by leaps and bounds. She is entirely a god sent angel to this earth, FOR ME."

"Awww.. how sweet!" Nisha sighed and held George's hand lovingly. "But I never wanted to divert her from her aspirations. I completely adored her dreams. Hence I stayed away from her and let her live her dream. But when I saw her last year, as a bridesmaid in our classmate's wedding, I realized how much I missed her in my life. I felt very happy seeing her as one of the successful doctor in Shimla. But destiny had different plans and played a lovely game with us again. Again, we met last month in this same restaurant in San Francisco, which is still completely unbelievable and out of the box. And this time, I cannot miss the opportunity. I have wasted a lot of chances already."

"Wow, too many leaps of years' in the story. But, something is missing. Oh wait! Confession! You skipped that part. Why there is no confession scene in the story yet? When did you confess to your girlfriend?" Nisha asked raising her eyebrows.

"It's because, you are directly going to witness the original proposal scene now." Arjun completed, rising to his feet moving the chair aside and knelt down while George smiled, Nisha gasped aloud, and Anya was totally lost in the moment with her eyes wide and never leaving Arjun.

"Will you marry me, Dr. Anya Gupta? I love you very much. It Has Always Been You In My Life, Then, Now And Will Be Forever." Arjun declared holding Anya's hands and suddenly everyone in the restaurant clapped encouraging Anya to reply. Anya couldn't hear those loud "awwws" anymore, for that matter even the claps. All she can hear was her heart beating and reverberating in her ears. This was most important moment in her life, for which she was waiting from forever. And when she heard "IT" finally, she couldn't bring herself to reply. She looked at the sincerity in Arjun's eyes, which was now anticipating her response. She contemplated in her mind, not knowing how to start with her answer.

And she did reply him, in the most understandable language in the world, the language of love; she finally kissed him to convey her answer.

"It Has Always Been You for Me Too, Arjun." She said and hugged him and closed all the gaps between them.

"I know!" was all his reply and held her closer to him, not willing to let her go anytime sooner, cherishing every moment of their togetherness.

Naina

She placed a bunch of assorted carnations on the marble stone and got up to leave. Theautumn leaves had started to wither away, giving way to a rather chilly start of winter. The gloomy and dark skies had hidden away the natural sun light, as blankets of clouds fell upon the Melbourne skies.

Kicking the fallen leaves as she went, the 25rd year old tried to keep her wild, curly tresses at bay under the cool breeze of autumn. Though not many people possessed the ability to see past the flawless and well rehearsed pretence, Ruchi brushed her hands over her wet eyes as quickly as she could, preventing her facade from moistening.

Finding a warm and secluded spot in the state library, Ruchi found her diary and flicked it open to a book marked page.

Ruchi gazed at their favourite photo. A boy and a girl sat at a random beach with balloons covering their identities, lost in each other.

She leaned in, her hand shaking uncontrollably. She wanted to stop, she wanted to scream, but most importantly, she wanted to shove some logic in his mind.

To not make her do this, to not make her a culprit of murder. Of his murder, though his eyes urged her to continue.

Despite the urgency of the situation, his eyes held a certain source of calm. Not the calm before a storm, just a deadly calm, which was proving to be silently supporting her in her deed.

The calm in his eyes was offering the doctor in the making, a form of conformation almost like signing a consent form.

With shaking arms and eyes shut close, she somehow managed to pull the mask off his tiny nose. Feeling a tug on her arm, she slowly opened her moist eyes to see the sight that would be with her forever.

A warm smile and tousled hair.

And those eyes.

Eyes that held gratitude

Pulling herself out of the reverie, Ruchi wiped her, now not stopping, tears as she fished for tissues in her over sized bag.

Every few weeks, Ruchi would place a bouquet of assorted carnations on the door step of his new home, But today she had finally gotten the courage to read her diary.

Her diary, pages which recounted their moments together. Those same moments which never fail to haunt her day and night, memories that prick her conscience every day and night.

She folded her legs under her and smiled wryly.

Memories: Fuel yet burn. These are the footprints of the heart, which can never be erased. Fuel yet burn.

"Watch where you are going! God has been so kind to you that instead of two, He has given you four eyes. Appreciate it alright!" Ruchi said with a temper, as she got down to gather her books from the floor. It had already proven to be a hectic day for her and such commotions she didn't need.

"God has given me four eyes, but He very clearly forgot to tell you to stop and think before you talk. Oh! I forgot Madam Ruchi does not think before she speaks. Ego problems, I guess" Ruchi looked up to see Siddhanth smirking like he had just won a major argument.

"Siddanth go away!"

"No I won't!"

"Fine then, be the end of my wrath" Ruchi said showcasing all her teeth in an aggressive manner.

"For a university student, you sure are as immature as hell Ruchi. Now if you don't mind" Siddanth said offering to carry Ruchi's textbooks for her.

"Do you think I am some kind of poor and dependent woman Siddanth. Mind your own business and let me carry my books"

"You and anger seem to be the best of friends recently!"

"No, not recently four eyes. We have been best of friends since as far as I can remember! You got a problem with that?"

"Why would I have a problem with Ms Egotistical?" Siddanth said as he "accidently" walked in to Ruchi, making her books fall to the floor. Yet Again.

Smiling meekly Siddanth just shrugged his shoulders and started to walk away from his Madam Egotistical, who fumed in anger instead.

Smiling sadly at their antics, Ruchi continued to flick through the pages in her diary, until another page caught her eye.

These small moments with you, I shall always treasure. These small moments with you, who needs an "I love you"?

"What are you doing here Ruchi?" Siddanth said exasperated as he opened the door to find Ruchi standing shrugging her shoulders in response. Completely ignoring Ruchi's existence, Siddanth walked back to the cough to start rote learning for his exams again.

"Pfft!" Ruchi snorted as she snapped close the textbook and threw it on the table. Sitting on his lap, Ruchi ran her fingers through Siddanth's wavy, thick hair.

"Someone is clearly in a very romantic mood" Siddanth's deep chuckle filled the air around them.

"Not romantic, No, Never. More of an urm you know" Ruchi winked at Siddanth's shocked face, before leaning in to seal his lips with hers.

"You have become bad Ruchi. Do you want me to fail tomorrow's finals?" Siddanth chuckled at Ruchi's disappointed look.

"Well, when in Rome, do as the Romans! Just like they say Siddanth" Ruchi pulled a face and got off from Siddanth's lap and started to walk to the kitchen.

"Excuse me Miss Shah but who gave you the permission to leave huh?" Siddanth caught up with Ruchi, blocking Ruchi in between the kitchen top and himself.

"I don't need permission Mr Banerjee, I am my own person" Ruchi smirked with an air of arrogance.

"Ms I-am-my-own-person, how about some ice cream for the stress I am about to go through tomorrow?" Siddanth snaked his arms around Ruchi's waist while Ruchi just narrowed her eyes at his actions.

"Just two minutes ago, someone wasn't interested, then why now? Let me go, I am actually really hungry" Ruchi pouted while wriggling her nose.

"If I leave you someday, only then will you ever value my presence." Siddanth said in Ruchi's mockery.

"Yeah right! And why would you leave me? Even I don't know why I am with a four eyes like you! If only I had waited for a better model" Ruchi pulled out her tongue.

"One day you will realise Ms Egotistical with encyclopaedias for thighs, till then let me just satiate your hunger" Siddanth said while pulling Ruchi to his hips and closing the gap between their lips.

Pulling away from Siddanth and faking anger Ruchi said, "Encyclopaedias for thighs? You want me to start four eyes?"

"Abhi nah jao chod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahi" Siddanth crooned as Ruchi rolled her eyes at his melodramatic tendencies to pacify her.

Ruchi chuckled at the memory.

Who knew what Siddanth had said out of mockery, would someday turn in to a bitter truth? The bitter truth that Ruchi had never wanted to face nor comprehend.

The independent doctor in the making had started to slowly but surely fall for the nerdy yet compassionate lawyer. Slowly but surely Ruchi too was getting consumed in her love for Siddanth, after all, love is unconquerable right?

Little had she known that her perfect little paradise was on the verge of self destruction. The bubble which Ruchi had rigged up just for her and Siddanth was about to break. Ruchi was about to be introduced to her reality.

As Ruchi continued to flick the pages of the diary, another page caught her eyes.

Courage young heart, at times all you need to do is close your eyes, take a deep breath and open them again. The world seems a whole lot simpler this way.

"What are you hiding from me Siddanth?" Ruchi said catching up to Siddanth, who was walking rather rapidly in front of her.

"There is nothing to hide Ms Egotistical!" Siddanth said with his flawless smile.

"You lawyers think you can get away with little white lies? Well you are forgetting that you are talking to a doctor here, Mr Lawyer! We too are trained to pick through all the unnecessary details!" Ruchi tried to smirk with her retort, yet worry was clearly prominent in her tone.

"I am not hiding anything Ruchi! I promise" Siddanth said cupping her cheeks, yet his eyes had given him away long ago.

Ignoring his tired and expressionless eyes, Ruchi smiled and just nodded.

"I should have known long ago." Ruchi said to herself as she closed her eyes in dismal. If only had he told her beforehand, had he not trusted her enough? To this date, this question still irked Ruchi. It still irked her that she was somehow not worthy enough of the truth, no matter how bitter it was.

Coming to the last page she had written on, Ruchi touched the tear filled page which held only one line.

I hate you.

"Where is he? How could he do this to me Michael! Who the hell does he think he is? Where is he?" Ruchi had just thrown Siddanth's file away from her eyes and was bellowing orders at a common friends' of theirs.

"Ruchi, I need you to calm down. Siddanth's wouldn't have wanted it this way!"

"Then what way did he want it Michael? For me to find out at his funeral? He told me he was going for a conference for f**k's sake!" Ruchi's eyes blazed anger.

"Ruchi, I need to get you to the hospital room now" Michael said pulling a reluctant Ruchi along with him.

The car ride for Ruchi had been a blur, just like her mind. As the sun set, giving way to a much cloudier and stormier night sky, Ruchi's mind too reflected over the storm that was brewing in her heart.

The want to scream in to the void was eating Ruchi alive. Never in her darkest nightmares had she thought that life would be so cruel by throwing in this ultimatum.

Walking as rapidly as her tiny legs would carry her weight, Ruchi's eyes never stopped leaking their own story. Her tears had completely given away what her heart had wanted to emote. Peeking in through the window on the door, Ruchi saw a lifeless body of a person in pain.

A person she didn't know.

Siddanth had never told Ruchi about his treatment, instead he had told her he was going to attend an important law conference instead.

Walking in as slowly as she could, Ruchi no longer could see Siddanth sleeping in front of her. Instead Ruchi saw a tired man with a sullen face, his skin quite yellow and eyes quite hollow. The man's weakness was evident, as several needles pricked his arms.

A skeleton on the verge of afterlife.

The pungent smell of the hospital room was adding to Ruchi's increasing nausea.

Even though training to be a doctor, Ruchi was never prepared for the sight in front of her, that too especially of someone she loves so much.

Especially of someone she loves too much.

"Ruchi, he wants you to remove his mask" Ruchi heard a voice behind her.

"Are you mad? No! He will be fine! I will be with him! The best doctors will treat him, he will fine! No cancer has been incurable, he will be fine" Ruchi said without a pause in her erratic breaths.

"You are a doctor yourself Ruchi, who are you trying to convince?"

"I can't do this"

Ruchi touched Siddanth's face, his eyes lay emotionless expect for just one plea.

"I can't Siddanth. I am sorry" Ruchi's feet gave away at the sight of Siddanth's pain of being so close yet so far.

The pain of being stuck in the pendulum in between.

"You will have to Ruchi! It's either now or later and you know how painful it is later on. This is not murder Ruchi, it's just urm assistance"

"You are a doctor right? How can you ever advice anyone the notion of death over life?" Ruchi's eyes blazing with an unspoken fire.

The fire to save an innocent life.

"Sometimes you just have to trust your heart Ruchi. I will give you a few minutes" The doctor said with his tone losing its distinct aura of professionalism.

"Why are you making me do this? Do you hate me this much? I promise not to call you four eyes again, just don't make me do this."

Gaining no response from Siddanth's body, Ruchi continued, "Don't you want to live Siddanth? For me? For your family and friends? For your career? Don't you want to live for the sake of living?"

"It's time Ruchi" The doctor had come back, this time with Siddanth's family and their friends in tow.

She leaned in, her hand shaking uncontrollably as she turned off the life support and pulled off the oxygen mask from his tiny nose.

And for the first time since Ruchi had walked in to his room, Siddanth held emotion in his eyes. His eyes held inexplicable emotions that Ruchi could never comprehend.

Some things are just better left buried, as Siddanth's eyes filled up with moisture and his lips curved into a satisfied smile.

"I love you four eyes" Ruchi whispered into Siddanth's ear.

Leaning in for their last kiss, Ruchi closed her eyes and tried to pour all her love for Siddanth, yet he stayed motionless under the pressure of her lips.

Ruchi started to flick the pages of her diary, as if she was looking for an answer. An answer to her question, but even she was unaware of what the question actually was.

Staring at a rather thick page, Ruchi just stared on to the blank page, her mind reflecting the paper brilliantly.

"I love codes, partially the reason I want to become a lawyer. I want to crack the unknown" Siddanth eyes sparkled with child-like enthusiasm, giving away his zeal.

"If you like cracking codes, then you must like setting codes as well?"

"You bet!"

Ruchi's eyes widened in shock, as she started to pull the two pages of paper apart as gently as she could, not wanting to tear the carefully glued edges of the paper. For that moment in time, Ruchi had forgotten it to be a piece of paper and instead held the paper so gently as if it was someone's beating heart.

What was the point of living a half life that was about to end anyways Ruchi? I couldn't put you or my family through the pain of watching me in pain. I love you Miss Egotistical. Not the ideal way to say it, but there you go. I love and trust you with my life Ruchi and that too quite literally.

I don't really know what else to say, you know how bad I am at writing birthday wishes. Well this isn't a birthday wish, but the same deal really. Take care of yourself and eat your Iron tablets on time, otherwise I will haunt you in your sleep. Imagine a four eyed ghost? Now that is a sight to behold. Can I be Gerald Butler and say "PS: I love you".

PS: I am sexier, just saying.

As she read his writing for the nth time, Ruchi couldn't help but chuckle at Siddanth's idiotic nature. But at the same time, Ruchi couldn't stop her tears from flowing either.

For the first time in months, Ruchi no longer felt sadness. No longer did she feel the need to curse herself, nor cry herself to sleep. She no longer felt the need to feel burdened under his memories. No. In that moment of time, she had learned to live with his memories instead.

Ruchi fished out a pen and wrote on the same page, "You gave me a forever within the numbered days"

Embracing the Change

The date was September 21st, this date held a lot of importance to anyone who was going back to school. It was the day when all the children would feel nervous, excited or just happy to be at school again and start the term afresh with friends. On this day at 7 O'clock in the morning, Sunaina stood with a hot cup of coffee, preparing herself for the first day of school. She still had some time left before the mayhem would begin, so took this as the perfect opportunity for herself to take her coffee and sit outside on her porch. She couldn't believe her eyes. She thought her brain was playing some kind of trick as she looked at the view of her neighborhood. She thought it looked like some beautiful oil painting, the kind she could stare at all day without being bored. There was a cool breeze that found its way onto Sunaina's skin and she immediately pulled her hands near her body and at that moment she knew that it was no painting but in fact this was reality. It finally was autumn! She considered autumn as the favorite time of the year and she loved the view from her porch. She looked at the ground and found dry yellow-orange leaves everywhere. She stepped on some leaves and the sound of the leaves crunching was like melody to her ears. Everything looked and felt stunning to her and for her autumn symbolized new beginnings. It's the time when the new school term begins and there are so many festivities like Halloween and Thanksgiving Day. For her it was the perfect season. She took a sip of her coffee and wished that the time could just stop for a while, she was excited for the new school term but she was also quite nervous because of the new challenges.

Her train of thoughts was interrupted by a distant sound of laughter becoming louder and louder. She blinked her eyes to focus on her surroundings again and saw three girls walking by in their school uniform with perfectly tied hair and their bags slung carelessly on their shoulders. As they passed by her house, she couldn't help but overhear them. They were expressing happiness on going back to school. Sunaina felt a pang of jealousy deep down as she watched those girls walking to school with so much enthusiasm and this primed her mind for her back to school memories. She could still remember every minute detail of her school life and how she used to panic before going to the new term every single time. A big smile spread on her face as she was thinking about all this after a long time. She remembered everything as if she had just graduated from high school only yesterday. Sunaina recalled how her mother on the first day of school would make her favorite blueberry pancakes with chocolate milk as her mother always believed that after the long holidays only chocolate milk could give her energy to go through the first day without feeling tired. For her, the best part about going back to school was that she could start afresh and just like the autumn for her symbolized new beginnings; for her first day at school meant new experiences, new teachers, some new friends along with the old ones and a brand new attitude to go with the new books. She laughed at the memories of how she used to be so excited to go back to school that she would take her mother along to the mall to get all the supplies needed. One of her favorite back to schoolmemory was of the week before the school started and how she always used to clean her cupboard, arrange her books, and get her uniform dry cleaned. She also recollected the feeling of nervousness as she walked the hallway of her school after several months and that feeling got replaced with excitement on meeting her friends and chatting about one's summer activities.

One back to school memory that she always treasured was the last time she knew she was going back to school that is when she stepped in 12th grade. She knew this was the last year and she remembered everything about that day including her feeling nostalgic. She used to complain a lot about her studies but she knew from her older sister's experience that school life is that time in a person's life that never comes back. She had seen that her sister hardly kept in touch with her school friends and that she would always talk about her teachers and her sports group whenever she got the opportunity. Sunaina had decided that in the last year, she would enjoy each day and imprint those memories into her mind. She particularly remembered on the first day itself she had signed to volunteer for the drama club, she showed interest for the environmental activities, and also forced her friends to take part because she believed that no matter what she did, if she had her friends, there would be double the fun. Sunaina grinned broadly because what she had wanted to achieve then was very much successful because till today she remembered all those events clearly and just last month she was browsing through the photo album where she collected maximum of school pictures. Every time she looked at those pictures she never stopped feeling sentimental and shed some tears of both happiness and sadness.

Her walk down the memory lane got interrupted by a scream in the house. She looked down at her coffee which had gone cold and sighed knowing very well that the day has officially begun for her. "Mom, get back inside we are getting late," Sunaina's 8 year old daughter, Sama, screamed. Sunaina rushed to her room to calm her daughter who was panicking due to her first day. She entered Sama's room and smiled at how lovely her daughter was looking in the school uniform.

"Sama, you are looking lovely and I don't want you to worry, you have 30 more minutes before the bus comes."

"But Mom I cannot find my shoes and Dhruv is not ready yet".

"Your shoes are outside, near the door and I am going to help your brother now".

Sunaina was smiling ear to ear now; she missed this early morning of rushing around the house to get her kids ready for school. Holidays are great but for some reason she also feels very elated on seeing her kids going back to school and how she can run around with them every morning and meet the tight schedule so that they don't miss their bus.

"Mom, I need your help. Come here fast, I cannot find my socks", Dhruv, her 10 year old son screamed from his room.

Sunaina rushed there and saw what a big mess Dhruv had made and said, "Dhruv, your room is so messy. How will you find your socks? You have to clean your room after you come back from school".

"I will do that mom but I cannot find my socks. My teacher is so strict. I have to wear those socks only that is provided along with the uniform"

Sunaina chuckled, remembering the times she used to hunt for her socks too when she was small and how scared she used to be from her teachers, how she misses those days when wearing the correct shoes and socks were the only big responsibilities she used to face.

Breaking away from her thoughts Sunaina guided Dhruv to the laundry room where he kept his socks the night before so that it could get dry.

She rushed to the kitchen to pack their lunchboxes, and wondered about how times have changed yet how similar they are. She is surprised at times that her kids are not very nervous to go back to school as they already know which teachers they are going to get and they met most of their friends during the summer camps. She reminisced about how for her going back to school everything was new she didn't know who her teachers would be and that she hardly used to talk to her friends during the summer.

But one thing hasn't changed at all and her kids remind her of her childhood, of how she also used to be very excited to be at school and how she was flooded with homework and studies. As her kids came down all ready she felt proud looking at them and felt nostalgic about how big they have become. Sama and Dhruv expressed happiness on eating blueberry pancakes at which Sunaina told them that their grandmother started this ritual every first day of the school "Your grandmother used to feed me these pancakes and I ate them happily as if they were my good-luck charms and so I am continuing this ritual with you two also."

Just in time the bus honked and the kids rushed outside as Sunaina waved them goodbye. She couldn't help but feel jealous again only because of the reason that she wanted to be in that bus and be a young child again, she wanted to be a teenager and walk to school with her friends not worrying about the world. But all Sunaina Malik could do was stand on her porch and watch the big yellow bus hurriedly move from one street to the next. She knew she had no time to think about all this because her day also begins from here just like the kids had to go back to school she also has to go back to work. She rushed inside and quickly got ready as she knew her colleague Rachel would be on time to pick her up. One good thing of being a professor in a university was that it also meant a three month long holiday just like the kids.

And right on time she heard a car honk and she walked outside locking behind an empty house that would according to her now rest in peace till the afternoon after the busy morning. She preferred to ride in silence but Rachel was chatting non-stop about the next term's agenda and how they would have to set the assignments for the students. Sunaina smiled at Rachel and told her to relax as it was the first day and this day is meant to be enjoyed both for the professors and the students.

After a short journey they reached their destination and every time Sunaina saw the university she never failed to admire its architecture and it seemed to her that today the building was looking more welcoming than ever. With the clear blue sky as the background and the red-yellow trees around the campus the university was looking very magnificent. She walked towards the entrance and noticed many students walking past her, some excited and some nervous. She smiled and realized that just like her small kids were experiencing their first day back to school, these young adults were also experiencing their first day. As she walked up the stairs to teach her first class she felt excited, she always liked the first day of university. It meant a new beginning for her and the students, of how they would introduce themselves and how she would describe to them that university life is almost similar to school so that they could feel comfortable. She loved teaching psychology especially to the new students because whenever she talked of something new or described something that is very natural to human behavior that each and every individual experiences she loved looking at her student's faces that reflected nothing but eagerness and a certain desire to learn more. That's why she loves taking the first day lecture for the new students because it somehow reminds her of herself in school and college and of how she used to be so excited to gain new knowledge and just learn more and more from her teachers.

After she was done for the day at the university, she went back home with Rachel to be greeted by Sama and Dhruv. As soon as they saw her step inside the house they immediately started telling their first day stories. Sunaina loved this part. She loved hearing the good and bad stories about the first day from her kids.

"Mom, there is new kid in my class he seems to be very mean", Dhruv started.

"Mom, I tried out for the juniors badminton team I think I might get in", Sama said while interrupting Dhruv.

"Kids I want to hear your stories but first tell me if you enjoyed your first day back to school and did the pancakes work their charm"

"Yes"! They both screamed at the same time and hugged Sunaina.

"Good now both of you have to change and I am going to prepare my very special autumn drink".

The kids ran upstairs leaving a mess behind with their shoes thrown near the door and their bags thrown on the sofa. Sunaina sighed but she didn't complain because she loved all this and was missing this for a very long time. With these thoughts going around her mind she set out for the kitchen to prepare her favorite autumn punch, one of the reasons why she loves autumn so much has got to do with this punch. She loves the tangy flavor that the apple-cranberry juice brings to the drink along with ginger ale. She does wonder though who named it the autumn punch maybe it had something to do with the colour - the punch takes a red-orange colour that compliments the autumn leaves.

Just as she put the jar of the drink in the fridge for it to chill, she heard the doorbell ring. She looked at the clock and she knew who it was. Dhruv opened the door and welcomed his aunt and her best friend Tara along with her two sons Tanuj and Meher. As soon as Tara came inside she could smell the aroma from her homemade Butternut Squash and Feta muffins which were her specialty. The kids went out to play and both Sunaina and Tara set the table with the punch and the muffins outside on the porch.

"I knew you would make the punch that's why I brought these muffins"

"Yep and the same way I knew that you would be here just like every year celebrating the first day of school"

Both of them laughed at this and recalled how Tara had started this ritual of spending the first back to school day together so they could talk about old times and hear their kids' stories together.

"Just today morning I was thinking that how I wish I could also go to school again"

"Sunaina, I am just so happy to be here I cannot think of being a teenager again" Tara joked.

They both sipped the punch and ate the muffins where the feta cheese would melt in their mouths with every bite and look at their children playing and recollecting their school memories of how they used to do everything together whether it was sports or studies. Sunaina considered herself very lucky that even after all these years she still was in touch with her friend and they both could enjoy new experiences.

"You know Sunaina we cannot go back to old times again that's now how life works"

"I agree with you but I cannot help feel this way sometimes"

"I understand but we those lucky ones that are experiencing those back to school events again with our kids"

Sunaina knew her friend was right and she knew it that she would not have it any other way, she was happy being a mother, a wife, a friend, and a professor. The cool breeze started doing its round again and with the breeze hitting her face she felt more rejuvenated and thought to herself that this was yet another new beginning and just like the autumn symbolized the start of the end this first day of school was the start and the end would also be near. Sunaina Malik wanted to turn the clock around and wanted to experience her back to school times once again but all she could do is treasure the memories and make new ones with her kids and experience back to school again as a mother instead of a student.

What my heart desires

She was drowning; the waves of sadness and remorse that engulfed her was truly overwhelming to her. It crushed her spirit, and what made it even worse was the helplessness. There was nothing that she could do to make the pain go away, the pain she herself had brought into their lives - or rather, into his and her lives...

****

The doorbell ring was deafening...

"Am coming...no need to press down the doorbell."

Isha skipped down the stairs and pulled open the door..."Aaa..."

So startled was she at the sight in front her that she stumbled backwards with a scream...and it took her a moment to find her bearings...

Aryan found her reaction so hilarious that he started laughing at her, clutching his stomach. Isha was now embarrassed and angry. She started pulling his hair and punching him.

"Awww...Isha...stop it...you are spoiling my costume...stop it."Isha wasn't ready to listen...

"Costume...?..You look like a freak. What is with all this meat part thinghy hanging out...ewww..."

By now she was panting from the struggle with Aryan and he had jumped to safety behind her couch.

"Oh! How I wish I had taken a video of your reaction..."

"Aryan...." Isha started moving towards him...

"Hey! Stop right there. Peace. No video. OK? Now calm down."

"Aryan! What the heck are you wearing?"

"What..?...this is my costume - for tomorrow night's University Halloween ball...I was just doing a dry run. From your reaction, I think this one's going to be a super hit."

"Costume...? And this? You look like a freak show. And why is this thing reaching only your knees. Did the butcher run out of meat - for full trousers?"

"Isha. Don't tell me you don't recognize this...it is THE meat dress...worn by Lady gaga...of course, how would you know? Your pop icon is John Lennon and your favorite band is Fleetwood Mac."

"Well...that's cos their music is timeless...and soulful. Not like the electronic junk that is sold as songs today."

Aryan just stuck his tongue out and headed into the kitchen. Isha usually had some yummy Caesar salad and that's what his target was.

"Isha...where is the salad...?"

"I did not get time to cook today...I just finished prepping for my seminar...how about we go out and grab a bite...."

"OK. But I can't walk into Pizza'n'Pasta like this. We'll drive back to my place, I will change and then we'll go from there."

"Yeah right. Otherwise people there might use the meat from this horrible costume as topping."

"Haha, very funny...now quit wasting time and come..."

"Why hurry? It's only 7 pm...Goooddd..."

Isha sat looking out of the window as Aryan drove through the roads strewn with autumn leaves. She let her gaze take in all the Halloween decorations in the houses they passed by, the jack-o-lanterns glowing in the darkness of the fall night.

*****

Isha was brought out of her reminiscing by loud honking...she had almost stepped out of the sidewalk. Quickly regaining her composure, she sighed. Halloween this year was long gone; without Aryan and his creepy costumes, without his laughs and his silliness that had once irritated her to the core and cheered her up like no one else could. Gone were those days, gone was his presence in her life.

She found tears starting to form in her eyes, they couldn't be stopped and sobs were starting to rise up from deep within her throat. She sat down on one of the benches, idly gazing at the traffic. A young couple walked hand in hand on the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road. They reached the door step of the house right across from where she was sitting and stood there for a while. The girl was indicating towards the door, maybe it was time for her to go in. The guy nodded his head and moved backwards, but at the last minute the girl pulled him back and gave a quick peck on the cheek.

Clearly their first kiss, Isha discerned that from the way the girl stood there for a moment bowing her head in shyness. The girl climbed the few steps to the door in a hurry and disappeared inside. And the guy smiled and he too walked away, playfully dribbling away a soda can.

First kiss. Her lips curved into a ghost of a smile. She too had been shy. In fact, she remembered every little detail of it. It was on Thanksgiving Day, last year.

*****

She had thought of spending it alone at her place, at the house share she had rented for her University studies. Her housemates had left to spend the holidays with their families. But Isha did not have anywhere to go. It was her first Thanksgiving. Her immediate family, or what was left of it, was back in India - her uncle and his family. She had lost her parents at a young age and if not for her academic prowess, she would have had to live an ordinary life; one that did not involve a scholarship to a reputed U.S university.

Aryan had invited Isha and some other friends for dinner at his house. He had everything that she ever wished for - a loving mother, a doting dad, and a pestering yet cute younger sister. And they did not just have a house, they had a home that was filled with warmth and love. She had thoroughly enjoyed that weekend. The dinner had been sumptuous and when she had tasted the turkey, it had felt like instant nirvana. Aryan's mom was an awesome cook.

As everyone settled in for the night, Isha and Aryan stood at the patio, sipping red wine.

"Thanks Aryan. Thank you so much. I...I really enjoyed this weekend."

"Anytime Isha...by the way, just a thank you...? Nothing more...?"

He let the question hang and moved a little closer to her, sliding his hands over the banister of the patio.

Isha looked at him wide-eyed. She knew what he was hinting at, in fact it was him who had put a small wrench in her enjoying the evening to the fullest; his glances, the way his eyes had swept over her again and again, taking in her pretty floral dress clad form - she had noticed all of those. Earlier at the dinner, when he requested her to pass the broccoli gravy, she was sure that the finger grazing that followed was not fully accidental.

She lowered her eyes and kept her eyes fixed on the small locket that hung around Aryan's neck...his parents' initials.

"Look at me."

Aryan tipped her face up with a finger below her chin...she glanced into his warm brown eyes, the light reflected from the red wine giving it an altogether deeper shade. Or was it just the light? Before she could zero in on the answer, Aryan had bridged the distance between them. And then fireworks exploded in her heart, like the ones she had seen on the Fourth of July...bright and colorful. She was taken in by it, the colors swirled around and engulfed her. It was like magic and Aryan was the one doing this to her. It seemed all that he wanted to emote was displayed in that one gesture - care, affection, tenderness... and love...??

Isha's train of thoughts came to a halt. Aryan sensed the slight pause and he stepped back.

As he turned to go back to his room, Isha grabbed his arm while her eyes were trained on the banister, not having the courage to meet his. Aryan looked at her standing with her head bowed...his Isha. Before she took another breath, he had taken her in a bear hug, spreading warmth that reached right through to her soul... covering her from the slight chill that had spread through the night air.

****

The warmth was gone. It was the start of winter and there was no one by her side as the darkness had started to deepen. Dusk had given way to night. Isha made her way to the nearby park, treading along the narrow cobblestone path sprinkled with a light snow shower. The maple leaves of autumn were beginning to get mushy after mixing with the snow.

Maple leaves - Aryan always adored them. Isha used to pull his leg saying he must've been born in Canada and not in the U.S and he used to laugh it off. For their first and last Christmas together as a couple, Isha had bought him a sweater with a maple leaf motif on the chest. He had loved it and she remembered the way his eyes had shone as he had tried it on.

But a few days later - after a friendship that had lasted over two years and a courtship only four months along, Aryan had got an internship opportunity in the West Coast. Isha had urged him to take it up, but Aryan was reluctant...he did not want to leave her alone. Their discussions slowly turned into a mild disagreement and then into a full blown argument. Isha had accused him of being short sighted. She had hated the thought that he would let go of the golden opportunity just to be with her and Aryan had accused her of trying to deliberately create distance between them. Finally, with neither giving up, they parted that night.

As Isha continued with the internship at a company nearby the university, Aryan had gone off to West Coast without even saying goodbye. She got to know from some friends that he did visit his home every couple of months. But that's all she knew...he had not called her and every minute they had spent apart was torturous. Aryan was her friend ever since she had started university. In a land where she knew not a soul, he was a true friend and a companion - who shared her dreams, aspirations, joys and sorrows. She felt she had not done full justice to their relationship. Maybe she shouldn't have forced him to go. But then, she could never be selfish.

She had wanted him to go, but in the end, come back to her...take her in his arms...and promise her that their time apart was over...that he was going to be by her side...always. She had wanted him to understand that that was what her heart desired. But it was not meant to be. She had realized that from every moment that had ticked away without his phone call or messages. And now she wanted nothing but to free her heart from the shackles of loss it was bound with...seemingly for eternity.

She tightened the cardigan around her, as if in a desperate attempt to protect herself from the harsh reality of the world. Walking through the park, she turned left to take the shortcut. It was not a well-lit area of the park and her friends had advised against it. But she always took it on her way back from the internship. And today was the last day of it. Aryan too would have finished his internship by now. Sighing, she stepped onto the soft grass. That's when her gaze fell on small lights, blinking like fireflies in the darkness. Her eyebrows furrowed as she had never earlier seen fireflies in the park.

As she walked closer, she realized what those lights really were...candles...tea lights, her favorites.
And it seemed that they spelled out something. She moved in closer to discern what it was.
She was startled by a familiar voice and a strumming of a guitar...

"I don't wanna know the reasons why

Love keeps right on walking down that line

I don't wanna stand between you and love

Honey, I just want you to feel fine

Finally baby

The truth has come down now

Take a listen to your spirit

It's crying out loud

Try to believe

Oh you say you love me but you don't know

You got me rocking and a-reeling

Oh, oh, yeah, ah, ah, ah

I don't wanna know the reasons why

Love keeps right on walking down that line

I don't wanna stand between you and love

Honey, I just want you to feel fine"

"So...do you like it...? Oh wait...You haven't read it fully yet, have you..?."

Her gaze moved from his face to the candles...numerous ones lit up to convey something. She finally read what they formed...

Sorry

Aryan had done it. For her...

Her heart was now ruling over her body and the rainbow of emotions - hope, anguish, relief, euphoria, all evoked by his deep yet playful voice and the sweet gesture, manifested in the form of tears. They wet her cheeks and ran down her face...

"Aryan..." She whispered...and Aryan took the first step in eliminating the distance that had come to be between them - both physical and emotional. He took firm long strides towards her and took her in his arms, just like old times.

This is where he belonged...and this is where she belonged too. He was an idiot not to realize how unselfish she had been. She must've suffered too. How cruel of him to not have contacted her even once. It had taken him a while to realize his mistake, and even longer to come up with a way to apologize. The die-hard old school romantic that she was, he knew it would take a simple yet genuinely heartfelt gesture for her to realize how sorry he truly was.

Isha was sobbing as Aryan patted her back, soothing her, assuring her that he will be by her side always...and Isha finally felt content. She clung to him, hugging him back tight.

"It's OK Isha. Everything will be alright. I am back and I promise that we will always be together. I missed you so much..I will never ever do this leave you alone...I love you Isha..."

"I...I love you too...Aryan.."

As Aryan sensed her tears subsiding, he decided to get out of the freezing park...
"Hush...no more tears...Now come on, let's just get out of this place and grab dinner."

"Aryan...it's not even 8..."

"Yeah. But I had skipped lunch today...cos of all the nervousness and the excitement."

"You...and nervous? I don't believe it..."

"What...I had to learn this song lyrics...damn Fleetwood Mac...your favorite artist should've been Justin Bieber...I could just say Baby Baby...like 10 times...and song done."

Isha giggled..."Thanks Aryan...I know you don't really like my kinda music, but this song is one of my favorites. And now I guess it will be my most favorite...cos, you sang it to me."

Aryan just stood there with a smirk, happy and a little proud too that he was able to bring a smile on his beloved's face.

"OK. Let's go. But before that, need to blow out these tea lights and take them with us. I don't think the authorities would want the whole park burnt down by morning. Come..."
Isha carried some tea lights and Aryan carried the rest along with the guitar case slung over his shoulder.
"By the way, mom has asked me to bring you along for Thanksgiving..."
Isha looked at Aryan questioningly.

"I think she knows", Aryan confirmed.

"So...what to do you think? Should I come?" Isha's eyes locked with his, expectantly.

"Oh well...up to you...", Aryan said cheekily and started sprinting away...
"You...stop right there...." Isha chased him and caught up with him at her doorstep.

Aryan put down the things in his hands and held her by the shoulders. Gazing into her eyes, he said...

"I want you to come...because I want to make it as memorable as last year...its my favorite Thanksgiving tradition..."

He gave her a wink and a smile and then swooped down to take her lips, taking her away into a world where it was just him and her...together...forever...

Goodbyes are meant to be...

--

The bright and beautiful colors of the leaves indicated a beginning of a new season. Autumn - her favourite time of the year. Orange and red autumn leaves covered the path leading to the small but neat garden and she sighed in melancholy. There were too many memories attached with this particular season. Good, bad, happiness, and sorrow - the season had captured all the memories. However, one particular memory struck out to her, forcing her to experience the pain all over again.

*Flashback*

"I can't do this anymore."

With that one sentence, his fear came true. He had known it for a while that what he gave her wasn't enough. No commitments, no expression of love. Nothing at all! He had only himself to offer and it wasn't enough. It never was. She was a lady of commitments, loyalty and trust. She gave him everything, without asking for anything in return. Not even reciprocation to her love confession on their first night together. He saw this coming for a while, but he refused to amend the situation.

Having said that, it wasn't that he didn't feel anything for the girl before him. Hell, he loved her. With all his heart and more! It was just that, he couldn't get himself to commit to her. He was scared. Of what? He hadn't yet figured it out. There was something in the back of his mind that hindered him for proclaiming the emotions he felt towards the beautiful lady standing right in front of him.

He looked up and found her eyes concentrating on a wall behind him. Her face beholding a look faraway, awaiting his response on her earlier statement.

"I did say I'd support any decision of yours." It was the most pathetic thing he ever said in their acquaintance of nearly 5 years. And the realisation wasn't far off. Her eyes filled with shine of salty water and his heart wrenched at the sight of the sadness that was her face. She was smiling, of course. There wasn't a day when she didn't smile that effortless smile of hers when she was with him. But the current smile took an effort and it was all so very evident in way she was clenching her jawline to maintain the smile.

"Always glad to know what I meant to you." It wasn't sarcasm and they both were aware of it. It was plain an observation on her part. "I really do love you, Aarav. But your indifference hurts me. I can't take it anymore." She stopped, to control the lump that formed in her throat. Taking few deep breathes, she continued again. "I don't have anything against you. You're a great man and you've made me very happy in the last 5 years. Happiest I've ever been in my life before. But before your indifference can ruin our beautiful memories, I'd like to back off. It's almost selfish but I can't help it this time."

He reached for her hand and she didn't pull away from his touch like he almost expected her to do. Taking that as a cue, he pulled her to himself and locked her in his embrace. "Can I ask something of you for the last time?" She nodded as she rested her head on his shoulder, hiding the shiny water that refused to stay at bay.

"Can you be with me tonight? Please?"

It was a plea.

But she couldn't answer that particular plea.

"I can't." It was perhaps the first time she refused him something and he didn't like the rejection that stabbed in his heart just a little bit more. It was probably for the best. He thought, placating his bruised heart.

"I'll be away from the country for a while. Dad wants me to join him in Florida in November to celebrate thanksgiving with him. I'd like to spend some quality time with him too."

"It'll do you good. You know, getting away for a while."

The small talks were pointless and they both knew it. But it was better than the haunting silence that had grown home between the two. There was never really moment of uncomfortable silence between the two. Sure, he wasn't much of a talker but she fulfilled that role oh-so well in their relationship. This sudden, uncomfortable silence was unusually painful and it hurt just a little bit more.

It was heart wrenching to let go of a five years old relationship but sometimes letting go is the best thing to do. Setting free a relationship often strengthens the bond between two people. The thought took her back to school, where she had memorized this quote for one of her literature assignment.

"I'll miss you." This was the closest to an expression of love Rhea were to receive and her heart filled with warmth at his honest confession. She was glad, it finally came around. A little late perhaps but she couldn't complain.

"I thought about what you said last week, about starting up a small business. I talked to Ali and he was quite eager to join in. I have a meeting in the bank tomorrow." Her eyes twinkled with genuine happiness at his statement, while her lips made a perfect round shape. Selfless, she was but perhaps better off without him.

"You did that? Really? Oh God! I'm so pleased to hear that, Aarav. I'm sure the meeting will go well."

"You sound really surprised!"

"Well.. I am surprised. It's just that you don't usually listen to anyone, so.." She didn't complete the sentence. She didn't need to. As a man, Aarav took great pride in acting on his own rules and teachings. He hadn't listened to anyone right from the childhood, so for him do something like this came as a shock even to himself.

But then he realised. He wanted to be a better person. For her. She didn't deserve a mechanic who worked in a local garage. She was a Business Executive for her father's multinational company.

He was about to respond to her when Ali barged into the room.

"Bhai, I've been waiting for you since two hours now. How long..." Whatever he was about to say was cut off as soon as his gaze met Rhea's. How's that for a perfect timing? Ali let out a profanity under his breathe. The due looked annoyed. Clearly, he has ruined the moment but it was too late to change it.

"Bhabhi, hi. When did you come?" His choice of endearment threw Rhea a bit but she recovered before either of them noticed. It was Ali, after all. He had called Rhea Bhabhi' ever since Aarav introduced her to him. But it had been a while since he had met her and hearing the endearment again caught her off guard.

"I came a while back. I'm sorry, I didn't know you guys had plan." She turned her gaze to Aarav to see him staring right back at her, ignoring the presence of the third person. Possessively, he moved closer to Rhea and lightly touched her back as if claiming her as his.

"We don't have plans, do we? Ali?"

"No, of course not." His voice stuttered against Arnav's hard stare, which didn't go unnoticed by Rhea. She knew she had to go. She was stalling the parting moment as much as she could. But she couldn't do that anymore. It was time for the inevitable.

"Ali, can you give us a minute, please?" All the three people present in the room including herself felt the shakiness in her voice. The lump she tried to conceal so hard couldn't stay at bay. She had to let go.

Ali nodded and left the room quietly, closing the door behind. Maybe, he understood the fragility of the moment.

"Stay in touch, won't you?" She tried to make the lightness of the moment but she couldn't. The tears followed the moment she uttered the words. How was she to let go of him? He was part of her very being.

Aarav let his hand drop from her back and gathered her in his embrace. She fit so perfectly in his arms, like that place was made for her only. He knew there would be no other woman for him. It was either her or no one. Maybe sometimes in the future, he'll be brave enough to confront her with his darkest fears. Maybe she'll understand and perhaps even forgive him for not stopping her. Maybe this was the start of winter for him, start of darkness that he connected with winter. Maybe the darkness will be over soon and the sun will shine again. There were too many maybes in his life. He was a coward for not making things certain but he had made been a while since he made peace with that attribute of his.

He tightened his hold on her and found a deep wetness on his shoulder. He broke apart from the embrace and his heart wrenched with pain at the sight before him. She was crying. Damn! It was all because of him. It was his inability to do anything right in his life. Damn him! It broke his heart bit more to see what his actions had done to her.

He didn't know what to say to her. He was never a man of word. He was a man of action. For him, actions matter for than anything else. So he did the only thing he knew to be right thing to do at this moment.

He kissed her. Not the wild, passionate kisses they shared every time they met. This kiss was gentle, soothing. Almost like a kiss that was preceded by a love confession. Except no love confession was involved in this one.

It was a goodbye kiss.

One that neither of them will be able to forget as long as they lived.

*End of Flashback *

A beautiful sound of laughter, which most certainly belonged to her 2 years old daughter, brought her back to the present. The link to the old memories lost for the moment as she sighed a deep sigh. She reached for the now cold cup of black coffee and shivered as the bitter liquid touched her tongue. Even after all these years, she couldn't get herself to drink the bitter liquid with ease. It was not of her liking, after all. It had been his!

"Mamma, can Hayley and me go and play in the front garden?" The melodious sound of her two year old curved her lips in a sad smile. He'd never know her.

"Sure, sweetheart. But don't be silly."

As she watched the little bundle of joy skipping and running towards the front door, Rhea couldn't help the salty tears that rolled down her cheeks.Someday, she'll be brave enough to face the truth. But for now, she was happy. Contended. Satisfied.

Frozen Heart

Despite of the windows closed, the sounds of leaves falling on ground were audible in the bedroom and the whispers of wind were trying their best to be heard by striking to the window glass now and then. That what was the outside of the home situated in centre of a big lawn dressed in the yellowish orange leaves of trees...and the mountains were visible on the front skyline..while at the back it was the forest that now seemed more dark n sorrowful.Trees were feeling very exposed now..teary in sadness of the old ones yet they had their spirits lively in joy of welcoming winter as the wind let them know they had her still and there is a hope...that.it will pass..they will survive it.The start of winter had it's own way to express joy..

The voice of something heavy, crashing down on wooden floor ,echoed in the silent surroundings...making the birds flew away in the sky ..which were seated earlier on the branches of nearby trees and the top roof of the house..

"Liam, what happened ?!!!"
Her voice was..musical than any sound...had hint of worry and concern for the person who was now busy in gathering stuff of box ,he mistakenly had dropped down earlier the moment.

He looked above for a second as felt her presence in room..

he had fair complexion..green bluish eyes..blackish brown shiny silky hairs...grown bit giving him an attractive look..in his late twenties...

"I am fine..Mary..just dropped this box.."

He replied to her as stood up with box filled of old picture frames , albums and diaries like stuff..

"I told you to not bother about this wardrobe section.. It's just some old things.."

The girl replied with hint of a sigh in her voice...while she wore out the towel she had wrapped on her head after taking shower...

She had extremely fair complexion ..looked gorgeous even in her late twenties...like a teenager... Her diamond studded green big eyes fairly complimented by gorgeous eyes lashes..were adding real beauty to her perfect features of face... Her long silky golden wet hairs were just declaring her as fairy or a Gorgeous elf girl..

"I know Sweetie but look... i found our marriage papers finally ... And Remember we have to start sorting out things we need to take with us.. "

He replied to her while putting back the stuff in wardrobe n closed it..he cleaned his hands with a cloth piece.. And looked at his silent wife...who was now sitting on their bed lost ...

..dressed in a white sleeveless long top ..which had baby pink coloured floral print .. Fitted perfectly to her.. revealing her body curves and her slim waist..

With a small half sorrowful smile ..he sat in front of her.. Held.. her cold palms... his warm palms not only gave soothing relief to her nerves. ..but feeling warmth of his love made her smile lightly as looked at him for once..

"i know it's hard to leave...(his palms creased her arms slowly as saw her lowering her head to hide the visible feelings..trying to give her the strength she needed at that time..)... I can't imagine or even understand..the pain....(she closed eyes to push back her tears ..but she felt so weak..when it comes to hide pain from him..).. You must have been going through right now ...(she looked at him with a gratitude as tears despite her all efforts rolled down her cheek and his fingers creased away them lovingly..his presence was what for which she was thankful...) ...At the thought of leaving this place... But you need to start think about the new one..( she looked down at his hand on her stomach...and then at his face which had concern for her..for their baby..she wiped away her tears n nodded lightly.)..."

"Ya ..i know..You are right like always.. I should laid down the dinner...it's getting late..."

Gathering her emotions.. She got up to leave..but stopped as felt her palm still in his hand...before she could look back to find out the reason..she felt herself pulled back ...and she ended sitting on bed near him...she closed eyes as felt his face ...snuggled in her collar bone..

"Mary..Do you Remember the first time you have said ..that you would give me a fair chance?"

Her name from his mouth ...felt her nerves giving up in his arms..His whisper in her ears..led a guilt creep in her heart..she wished she wouldn't have been like she is..she looked at him...she was... Different..weird ..complicated..complexed..destructive personality..even when she had wished ..to change herself..but her nature was nurtured...in a way..that had left..one part of her personality empty..void of any feeling of joy and happiness..till...three years back she had finally accepted his presence...

...

"dad dinner's ready.."

Mary called out her dad ...who joined her for dinner..he looked at his married daughter ...still the same..

"did liam asked you to go with him?"

She looked at his dad.. She knew her father was aware of his and her relationship's rough graph...even after being married for last six months

"no he knew i would say no..n the reason is not that i wanted to be with you at this Christmas...i just didn't want to go with him...I don't trust a liar..."

"Mary it was just one time and it was a harmless lie...it is your first Christmas after marriage you should have been with your husband even if he didn't ask himself to join him for dinner at his parent's place.. ."
"dad leave him..if he wanted to be with me ..."

The bell rang interrupting the conversation..she got up to check..and as opened door..left stunned seeing her husband there with flowers and presents in his hand..

"Sorry My flight got late..i..."

"Liam...come in.. you are here that means more than being on time.."

He got welcomed warmly by his father in law..where his wife was still recovering from his surprise..he smiled shrugging his head on seeing her speechless..and guilty...as joined dinner with them..he had learned to read her from her face in past one n half year..even when she hadn't learn yet to share with him...

"I am Sorry.. I should have given you a fair chance.."

That night when he had came in room she had talked to him herself in those six months for first time..he couldn't resist being close to her..and she felt herself stunned finding his hands on his shoulder..n his gaze on her face..

"I am Sorry for making it hard for you to accept me by lying to you at first place...I won't lie ever again..I promise..."

She smiled with a tear..as accepted his apology..before she could have turn n move away..she felt him holding her wrist..and as she looked above...she closed eyes as his face leaned on her cheeks..and she felt herself stunned as felt his kiss on her cheeks..and his whisper..

"May you have everything you wish for ,Mary...! Merry Christmas..!!"

That night she couldn't sleep because that night not only she had seen affection in his eyes but also had felt in his every act...it was scaring her..he had made his way in her frozen heart for ever...his smile..left the impressions..to not fade at all..she wrapped the shawl around herself which he had gifted her few moments ago..

...

"..Give chance to our baby too Sweet heart just like you gave me.."

She couldn't ignored the way he had composed her in all this time...not changed him as person she was..but ..there was something that she was void of...affection..the feeling of love...was now part of her personality...She looked at him...he had strange affection for her.. never able to understand it..

"I guess..Your affection made me to.."

Her brief reply made him smile widely..like he conquered something really big..

"Let's have dinner..i don't want our baby to starve n then hate it's dad for that.."

She chuckles as he underestimates himself..They both walked out of their room to a elegantly decorated living room inclined with open kitchen and a small dinner table near it..

"..there is no way anyone can even dislike you..."

She replied softly..as both laid down plates n food for the dinner..he looked at her with love..while she was busy in setting things on table...As didn't hear his reply ..looked above n saw his stare at her..which made her feel strangely shy..he realised his stare was making her nervous as saw her tucking her hairs at the back of her ear..

"Come on.."

He called out her softly..while grabbing her hand..and pulled chair for her n made her sit..she smiled as he lighted up the candle on dinner table and dimmed other's light..

There was happiness clearly visible on their faces..as both enjoyed the dinner in silence and stare at each other..smilingly ..feeling lucky to find each other...

...

Five Years Back Her Father had this worry how would on earth she will be ever able to live if something happened to him? She had excel in everything from her studies to her career..from a successful working woman to a loving n caring selfless daughter...The only child..losing her mother at early age..and being so attached to her dad afterwards..that Getting married n leaving him alone was not the point she let herself or her dad come..She had a life centred on her father..she had no one else..and she need no one else..but the fear of her father made it's way...which made him to make his daughter accept some realities..coz everyone is mortal in this mortal world..

...

He took turn on bed..and..moved his hand around the space..to hold her palm...She looked at his side as felt movement..she watched his face getting anxious..till she felt his fingers creasing her skin..and she watched the relief on his face as he slept holding her hand..

A small smile appeared on her face..as she rested her head back on bed crown..and closed eyes...letting herself believe...and feeling contented knowing her father's soul would have been resting in peace ..seeing her smiling..

"You are awake?"

She opened eyes as heard her husband's voice...she looked at him..as find him getting up ..rubbing his eyes to make his sleep flew..making her smile bit at his cute sleepy face..she forwarded hand..and cleaned his eyes..n smiled at her as he watched her lovingly..

"I m Sorry..i disturbed your sleep.."

He smiled as shrugged away her sorry..and holding her hand..became closer to her placing head on her shoulder...he looked at the open diary in her lap..

It's not the first time..i don't mind it..what were you reading?'

"..I was reading my old diary ... the day when you entered in my life.. "

He looked at her..n find her gaze watching him..he couldn't take away his eyes from her..as her beautiful features captivated him in a trance..and the five years back meeting came in front of his eyes..

...

"Excuse..me.. Mary Elizabeth ?"

Mary looked above as heard a voice of young man..

"Yea?"

The Young Man..introduced himself as Liam Jones..a student of her father... Much hesitant she was to be with a stranger..still at that time she was so weak to refuse the help from a person who seemed real nice..

...

After week ..for first time..She left the two in room alone as had to meet doctors to discuss her father's health n Liam offered to stay with her dad till she returns..Liam felt the guilt creeping as saw the old man staring at him...but he gathered his courage..

"i... know..you would be wondering who's liam? i remember my grandfather whom his student had come to meet in his last days..n he recognised him..before you think anything wrong..."

"Thanks Liam.. I know without your help she wouldn't have been able to bear my illness.."

"No your daughter is really strong..half of the time i had to persuade her to take my help.. "

"how did u know she needs you?"

"i have seen my mother losing her father.. Even when she herself was in her early forties n strong during his illness.. still she had cried like a four years old girl for her father when she lost him..I didn't want to see her going through all this alone.. "

"That means i survived have changed your plans now?"

"no i don't mean that about you..i don't .."

"liam.. It's an un-payable debt on me of you for being with my daughter..."

The old man smiled at the embarrassed young man..and the topic of conversation took drastic change by them as soon as Mary came back..who felt strange but all her attention diverted to her laughing dad with liam so fresh they looked..

...

"Mary Why Liam haven't come today?"

"i told him not to.."

"You are still angry on him for lying to you that he was my student..mary that's not a big deal..you were alone..n he just was concerned... Tell me honestly would you have taken his help and be with you if he was just a random stranger?"

"he is no one except a liar for me dad..and i can handle myself i don't need anyone..not him at least.."

"For how long you will let others believe that you don't yearn for love n affection ? What are you trying to pretend in front of your dad? I may be not like your mother..but i raised you Mary all by myself all these years..i know you.."

"Doctors asked u to take rest.. N don't talk.. I'll not let any stranger come home anymore dad..and that's final.."

...

He couldn't let her away from him..she lowered her gaze..feeling her lips still trembling after kiss...

"I can't believe still that I'm going to be father of your child.."

she couldn't help but smile..n looked at him..cupped his face gently..

"if you wouldn't have act like a jerk..our relationship wouldn't have such set back...still...i confess today.. You had melt my frozen heart by your presence in my life...when you lied about yourself...i was shattered.. I was hurt..that i wanted you for me..but ...i couldn't let go it until...your love made me to... "

...

"Mary.. For God's sake don't put the dam phone down.. Listen to me.."

It was for millionth time he had tried to contact her after sending proposal ... .. which she rejected ...

"Why should I??"

"because ... I love you Mary..."

He left himself stunned as spoke .. And the dead silence from other side made him restless..but he didn't just give up..

That night she was sitting in front of him .. As she had finally given him a chance to say something to her..there sitting she was for first time in her life was helpless..even though she wanted to remind herself that there is no one out there meant for her..who could understand her ..or more accurately ..she couldn't let anybody suffer because of alone her...but the person sitting in front of her had nerves of iron and courage of steel to have that kind of patience ...And he took advantage of her helplessness..as made her convinced on assuring her if they won't be able to understand each other..they would separate their ways.

...

"You know me better than i know myself , Liam... "

He turned as looked back at her..as get laid back along her..it was morning time since last night when he had woke up seeing her awake.. His wife had surprised her since he had met for first time n helped her seeing all alone herself.. Even when she didn't need it for sure..but it felt happy..her ignorance towards everything..hard like rock but soft like snow..her appreciating eyes on small gestures...her shattered personality..he had picked each piece in all these years..n composed her in way she was meant to be...he closed eyes as her lips touched his soul.. He wasn't sure he had got her as his match..the one person around whom his life had start revolving ...

"..Stay please..i need you..i want you to be with me.."

Her whisper were music to his ears...the sensation..of her love...gazing at her with love..cupping her face..he smiled affectionately as planted a kiss on forehead and taking her in arms..gesturing a yes..her laugh in reaction of his hand playing around and his teasing while kissing her ... broke away the surroundings silence n made the birds flew away from the nearby places..letting the snow falling from sky.. And the dimmed sunlight..piercing the clouds to make a way...and the ray of sun succeed in falling through the window in room...making her place hand in front of his face on seeing him irritated of sun..which made him hold in his arms.. n roll over ..the way sun was at his back now...she couldn't let herself away from him n snuggled in his chest.. As the sheet pulled over the duo...the drizzling outside..wetting the roads..was indeed indication of the start of the winter..But it had hope..a hope brighter than any darkness..

...The END...

Seal It with a Kiss

The early morning sun fell on her face, waking her up. She opened her eyes, shielded them from the sunrays and tilted her head to avoid the direct sun, her hand on her forehead, shuttering her eyes, trying to adjust to the daylight. She woke up to look at the time; 6:59 am. She kept looking at her digital watch.

Blink blink blink

It turned to 7:00 and the alarm rang.

"Time to get up my fair lady" she chuckled to herself.

As she got up and approached the window in her bedroom, moving the curtains to feel the warmth of the morning sun, she saw it; inch by inch; the autumn leaves falling on the ground in her backyard.

Another beautiful day where I collect the leaves' she murmured to herself...

"Sam," she called as she entered the kitchen, "Sam are you there?"

"Sam" she called again

"Here Rosie in the garage" he called out to her.

Rosie, her name, her parents named her after the rose that her dad had used to propose her mother.

What kind of a name is Rosie,' she thought to herself doesn't even look enticing' she kept pondering as she moved to the garage.

There he was, Sam her husband of almost 1 and a half year, 1 year in solitude since they married in India and hence the year of separation wherein they stayed apart waiting for his visa to pull through.

"Sam what are you doing?" she asked seeing him with the electronics, his favorite pastime.

"David uncle brought this to me last night and this is exactly what he said," he arranged his voice trying to mimic David, their neighbor a 65 year old who was living by himself after his wife had died 7 years ago and his children married away into different states.

"Sam my child," Sam continued "this piece of radio is nothing ... nothing but your aunts voice... And it hasn't been singing for the past two weeks... my lovely Maria's voice...can you bring back your aunts voice my child" he said with snicker, "I mean I love him, don't get me wrong Rosie" he added as he saw Rosie making a face of concern "I do but," he said laughing "all he had to do was say to me fix my radio Sam... cut the melodrama" he added "you know what I mean"

She understood exactly what he meant. "Yes Sam" she nodded.

"Hey listen I am going to go and make some cheese omelet, what do you think?" she asked.

"Cheese omelet ... Sounds yum...just like the one you made two days ago..."

Sarcasm' she thought to herself.

"I get it you want me to make you the Chicken that I made on thanksgiving last year when you were still not here...I get it"

He smirked.

"But you have to wait until thanksgiving na ... That's my specialty only for that time" she smiled back at him...

"Okay then... Cheese omelet it is...that I am eagerly waiting for" he said to her smiled and then got back to his work...

She smiled at him and headed to the kitchen...

Of late this had become her life... not that she was complaining... No not at all... Maybe she had even envisioned this in her fantasies, her dreams... but then was this all that was there to it...

She flipped the omelet... It made a sputtering noise as the other side was being cooked.

"Crisp and ready to serve" she called out to him, as he entered to take his position at the dining table.

This was the best part of the day now. The first bite, he always gave it to her.

She sometimes wondered was this to show his love or to prove his mistrust on her cooking... She laughed to herself in her mind... She believed it was the latter...

Being a Sunday morning the day was spent with grocery shopping.

They were in September but as they entered the stores, she could get the Halloween feel already what with stores displaying witches on brooms, pumpkins and everything spooky. Even Dunkin donuts had started selling their Halloween specials, pumpkin spice donuts and flavored coffees and lattes.

Halloween also meant that the start of winter was approaching soon... She remembered clearly the year before last when she had celebrated white Halloween with her parents, which amalgamated with the start of winter, far too early than it was supposed to begin in December.

"You will love the winter" she said as she picked up some tomatoes and onions to put on the shopping cart. "The only difference is that you would have to be clothed triple or even four times this being your first winter of sorts in the Americas."

"I am all ready to embrace it" he said

She sometimes wondered to herself... Was she really meant for marriage... I mean she could be an average cook for sure... Since she did not as much as enjoy cooking so yes she could be an average cook, her husband would usually do the laundry alternating with her on some days

There was nothing extraordinary in her marriage life. What exactly was she waiting for? Wasn't her husband supposed to be her prince charming?

She looked at him sideways as she was waiting for the light to turn green; he was busy on his phone; videogames and men she thought.

What would their kid learn from him if she ever decided to have one with him? How to beat Mr.X using special solar techniques that you get only by pressing the green button?

The honk of the car behind brought her out of the whimsical horror.

Six months now she was stuck in a job she was not sure she enjoyed much.

She got married, yes married, finally married, but was she enjoying marriage. She remembered the morning. Yes she was. She looked at him sideways. Maybe she wasn't too sure.

As they reached home, they brought the grocery into the house. At least he was courteous to stop his video games and help her move them in...

There were so many things running in her mind that she would wonder if she could explode someday just from keeping everything within her.

She was supposed to share her joys and sorrows with her life partner, wasn't she,' she thought to herself.

What was preventing her? She took one look at him. Maybe he was.

Maybe she was.

At night after dinner, she retired to her room, while he sat in the living room waiting for the news to finish.

She had dreams about him coming and cuddling her right before sleep. But nothing of that happened in practicality. Maybe it was just her, she thought, she also wished to ask him at times, but the fear of rejection never let the words out of her mouth.

An inherent sadness engulfed her.

No, this was not the way to be,' she thought to herself marriage was a commitment that had to be worked upon time and again... then why was he not making the effort...' she continued the thought.

She remembered one of her co-workers words. "It wouldn't matter who took the first step. It would matter as to who made the effort to not lose the relationship."

She decided to give it a shot.

As he came upstairs she sat up in bed

He looked startled to see her awake at that hour...

"I need to know something," she started.

"Umm sure what is it Rosie," he asked.

"Where do we stand with our relationship?"

He looked confused "what do u mean?"

"See this is exactly what I don't like... Whenever I try to make a conversation you put up a question and I don't proceed further, as if you never ever understand a word I say."

He waited for her to continue... she did not.

Instead she said "goodnight" and plopped on her bed.

"What is on your mind Rosie, tell me." He asked.

" Tell me what is on yours Sam, when was the last times we shared our thoughts... and I shouldn't even be asking this... this is supposed to be our honeymoon period... we just started living together six months ago... But I see nothing, no effort on your end to even make an attempt at romancing me, your legal wife. I mean, hey look at me, I walk out of the door, I will make heads turn, and no, I am not trying to say you do that as well but a minute glance with love and adulation? A little bit of compliment.. I mean" she huffed " this is not how it is supposed to be... We are married for Christ's sake... act like my husband... make love to me... kiss me, hold my hand, show me, show the world that I am your wife... oh my god what did I just say" she fumbled...

A smile escaped his lips...

She shut up and did not continue further...

He was dumbfounded

Did not know what to say...

"Geez Rosie... I don't know what to say"

"That's fine good night" she said and turned off the lamp on her side pretending to sleep...

They lay in bed... him being lost for words at her sudden outburst, her for the guilt that she let herself out like that...

As she woke up next morning he was sitting in a chair ahead of her...

She opened her eyes saw him for a brief moment and turned away...

"Rosie wait" he said "you spoke a lot yesterday"

"Which I shouldn't have?" she asked unapologetically

"No Rosie... Infact it showed me the flaws in our relationship... We don't communicate what's internal to us..."

She listened intently...

"let me tell you this... ever since your proposal came my way I have been waiting for you to say yes to me... All these years until we married last year... it was my dream come true..."

"But I am a reality Sam"

"Yes, yes I know... The fact is I love how you conduct yourself with your colleagues, with your friends, the closest circle that you have.. I admire that about you..."

"But there's nothing to admire.. I mean I am at my clumsy best with my friends, even colleagues sometimes"

"But you are always perfect with me... anytime I need something you have the answer... I was under the impression that you being the stronger of us two don't need me... To take care of you"

"Showing love does not mean you consider the person weak"

"Yes, yes I understand where you think from but I have had a totally different approach to this emotion... never felt the need to display it..." she did not interrupt him so he continued... "Until yesterday, when I gave this a lot of thought..."

"So if I had not mentioned anything you would have never felt it necessary to make this talk?"

He sighed "Rosie dear... I could be flawed at many levels...but there was no one to show me the flaw ... No one until now..."

"I am flawed too" she added when he did not continue further...

He smiled at her...

And came closer to her... held her hand, it surprised her... Her first experience of closeness with him...

"Why don't we make a pact today... To help each other with our flaws... so that there would be no one perfect than the two of us..."

She smiled at him "on one condition" she said

"Which would be what Rosie?" he asked.

"If you seal it with a kiss" she said with boldness as well her coyness...

He looked at her, she did not move her gaze away from his...even as he approached her centimeters away from her lips and just as she mentioned he sealed it with a kiss.

The House Of Leaves

Yorkshire, England

Autumn 2014

She wasn't alone. His memories wouldn't leave her alone, not even for a fleeting second. It was as if the memory of his voice, his smile was still a part of her, which clung to her like her very own skin. Her heart craved to look into those dark, twinkling eyes again, and the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled. Her ears ached to hear his voice, to hear that he loved her.

Dry leaves crunched under her feet as she began to walk through the path that led back to her parent's house. The forest floor was speckled with shades or orange, yellow and redautumn leaves. Golden rays of the early morning sun filtered through the gaps in the leaves and warmed her face. She buttoned up her beige overcoat, shivering slightly in the crisp morning air. She ignored the loose strands of her dark hair that clung to her cheeks, wet with silent tears.

It had been over three months since her husband's death, and yet, his absence still seemed like an illusion to her. Every moment she expected to turn around and see him shake his head at her, telling her it was all a joke. He hadn't really left her. How could he, when he had promised to stay by her side always? And yet, life had snatched him away from her.

In the blink of an eye, he was gone. Forever.

She heard the distant creak of the wooden gate as she pushed it open, its cool, wooden surface feeling alien to her fingers. The sound of approaching footsteps reached her as she stepped up to the door leading to her childhood home.

Even though she wanted to shut herself from the world, she couldn't. For there was another person who meant the world to her. Her six-year old daughter: Lily. Sadness gripped her heart every time she looked into her daughter's innocent eyes, as she asked about her father.

The door burst open and she looked up to see her mother's anxious face, her greying hair still uncombed. "Where were you, Koel?"

"Went for a walk." Her voice sounded lifeless, even to herself.

She pushed past her mother into the dark living room. It felt too cosy and warm.

"You gone, Lily gone..." Her mother's voice shook with anxiety.

She whipped around to face her mother, feeling a sudden flash of fear. "Where's Lily?"

Her mother sighed and wrapped her grey dressing gown tighter around her. "Where she usually is."

***

"Knock! Knock!"

The little girl jumped at the sound of the deep, male voice that reached her from below. She peeped through the little red window of the tree house to see a man dressed in a wine coloured jumper standing beneath the tree. His raven-black hair gleamed in the morning sunshine. When he smiled, she could see a dimple appear on his right cheek and for some reason, it made her smile.

"I can see you!" He called out to her.

She crawled to the little landing of the treehouse and lay down on her stomach, her face peering over the landing. "Who are you?"

"My name is Aakash. What's yours?"

The man had grey, smiling eyes, she noticed.

"Lily," she answered meekly, playing with the sleeves of her pale pink cardigan.

"Can I come up?"

She shook her head and said, "Mummy said not to talk to strangers."

He laughed and said, "You want to hear a secret, Lily?"

"What?" She rested her chin on the back of her hand.

"My dad built this tree house."

"Really?" She asked excitedly. Her face dropped almost instantly as she continued, "Mummy said my daddy won't come back any more. That he has gone to live with God."

She saw the man's smile disappear, only to reappear again. But this time, it was a wobbly one, like in the cartoons she watched.

"Can I come up now?" He asked again.

She nodded and turned over to one side, watching the yellow and brown leaves heaped at a corner of the landing, as she heard the man climb up the wooden ladder of the tree house.

He crawled to her side and his grey eyes looked right into hers. "You like magic, Lily?"

She nodded, her dark brown eyes suddenly lighting up. "You know magic?"

"There's magic all around you, Lily." He smiled, the dimple appearing on his cheek again. "Close your eyes. What can you hear?"

She closed her eyes, feeling the crisp autumn wind play with her dark fringe. There was the sound she always loved: the soft whisperings of the leaves as the wind blew through them. The distant chirping of birds, and the sound of dry leaves swirling in the wind.

"Can you hear them whispering to you?"

When she nodded, he continued. "Do you remember when your daddy used to whisper secrets to you that was only for you?"

Her eyes jerked open and she looked towards him. "Yes. Lily's secret." She giggled.

He lifted himself on his elbows and said, "Well, it's him whispering through the wind. Can you hear? He's always around you, Lily."

***

The leaves rustled in the wind and Koel looked up to see a few leaves drift away, their golden edges gleaming in the morning sunlight. She quickened her pace through the path, disturbing the fresh bed of leaves that lay on the path. Sounds of laughter drifted through the maple forest and she stalled, straining her ears to make out the voices through the laughter. She knew for certain that one voice belonged to her daughter. But then, she hadn't heard that heartfelt laugh ever since her little girl's father had been snatched away from her.

Her heart skipped a beat as she broke into a run towards the tree house.

She skidded to a halt, feeling the chilly wind flood into her lungs as she panted heavily.

Her daughter was squealing with laughter as a man tossed handfuls of dry leaves at her; a man with dark, unkempt hair, specked with bits of dry leaves. Lily giggled as he lifted her up and shot her into the air, her cheeks flushed pink from laughter. "Higher!" She shouted.

Lily saw her then and squealed, "Mummy!"

The man turned around, after gently putting down Lily and his glittering grey eyes looked straight into hers. As Lily bounded across the bed of dry leaves, she watched his lips curve at the corners, a dimple suddenly appearing on his right cheek.

Her voice was barely audible, blending in with the sound of the rustling leaves, as she uttered the next words. "Robin Hood."

Suddenly, she was ten years old again.

Autumn, 1990

"Hello, Tinker Bell."

Koel moved her torch towards the sound of the cheery voice and found herself blinking into a pair of grey eyes. It was Halloween. She could hear the distant sounds of laughter, belonging to children trick-or-treating, in the streets behind her.

The boy was dressed in a green Robin Hood costume, complete with a cardboard bow and arrow. She smiled and smoothened the green tulle leaves of her dress. "Hello, Robin Hood."

She moved her torch back to her book as he asked, "Aren't you going trick-or-treating?"

She shook her head and said, "I moved in to this neighbourhood yesterday. I don't know anyone. Besides, I would rather read." She paused and looked into his dimpled smile in the torch-light. "Why aren't you trick-or-treating?"

"We're moving away tomorrow." He replied in a subdued voice. "I would rather spend the last evening at my tree house."

"You have a tree house?" Her eyes widened in surprise.

He nodded excitedly. "My dad built it for me. Want to come?"

She slammed her book shut and stood up. "Can I?"

He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Sure. It's just back there." He pointed to the path through the trees, illuminated by golden streetlamps.

"Won't your parents scold you for staying out there alone?"

He laughed and rummaged in the rather over-sized leather pouch attached to his belt. "Well, my house is just back there." He pulled out a walkie-talkie and said, "Anyway, my dad gave me this! Isn't it cool?"

"Very!" She grinned and hugged her book to her chest.

"Let's go, Tinker Bell." He grabbed her arm and started pulling her down the path.

***

Koel stared up at the moon shimmering through the gaps in the leaves, as she lay on the wooden landing of the tree house. The colourful trees she had witnessed in the morning, appeared dark and sinister at night. But she liked to listen to their soft rustling sound up here. It was almost like being in a house of leaves.

"I hate it here." She grumbled. "I don't mean the tree house," She added quickly, "I mean this town. I don't want to go back to school tomorrow. I want my friends. I want to go back to London."

"Are you kidding me?" He handed her a bunch of chocolate eyeballs. "It's so much better here! London is so," he scrunched up his nose, "noisy."

"Country boy." She laughed and popped a chocolate eyeball into her mouth.

"You'll get used to it." He leaned against the wooden wall of the tree house and held his flashlight just below his chin. He lowered his voice to a spooky whisper and said, "Come on, Tinker Bell. It's Halloween! Time to scare you."

She sat up and snatched the torch from him. "Hah! I'm not scared of you. Let me tell you a ghost story!"

"Go on then." He crossed his arms behind his head and grinned.

"So, it all began when this little boy got challenged by his friends to go into this haunted house..."

"Shhh!" He paused her midway, his gaze fixed at the trees in the distance. "Did you hear that?"

The wind whistled through the trees, carrying with it the sound of dry leaves drifting across the forest floor. There was a distant sound of laughter and then, the sound of a tree branch snapping somewhere. A few dry leaves suddenly fell into in her lap and she jumped.

He burst into a fit of laughter and she frowned. "I'm not scared!"

"You..." he continued to laugh. "Were scared. Leaves scared you!"

"They did not!" She crossed her arms.

A minute later, she squealed, pointing behind him. His laughter faded and he quickly turned around.

"Bahaha." She burst out into laughter. "Now you were scared!"

***

"You're a cool friend, Tinker Bell. I wish I weren't leaving so soon." He jumped through the bed of dry leaves covering the forest floor.

The leaves crunched beneath her feet as she walked. She too kicked at a pile of dry leaves and watched them fly into the air, before settling down over her green ballet slippers.

He kicked a pile of leaves towards her and she returned it with a fresh pile of dry leaves. "I wish you weren't leaving too."

The street was strangely quiet now. Probably everyone went home, she thought. Her eyes drifted towards the carved pumpkin glowing brightly at her windowsill in the distance and she asked, "Wouldn't you ever come back?"

He shrugged and replied quietly, "Maybe not. We're selling the house and moving to Canada."

She forced a grin on her face and said, "Maybe when you grow up, you can come visit?"

His lips curved into a smile. "Yeah, maybe. Bye then."

"Bye, Robin Hood. Have a safe journey." She smiled.

As she turned around, he called out to her, "Hey, Tinker Bell?"

"What?" She turned around.

"Will you look after my tree house?"

***

Autumn 2014

For a moment, his eyebrows creased, his gaze not moving from her even for a second, as he tried to place where he had seen those hazel eyes before. The woman smiled and brushed away wisps of hair from her face, shaking her head in constant disbelief. It was when she laughed, moving her gaze towards the tree house and back that he remembered.

His face broke into a smile and he approached her, hands shoved deep into his pockets. "Tinker Bell?"

When she nodded, he burst into a fit of laughter. The little girl looked at him as if he had lost his mind. The next minute, they were both laughing along with him.

"You moved back. After so many years." Koel watched her daughter hum to herself as she twirled around the trees, her arms outstretched to reach out for the golden leaves that descended from above. She glanced towards the man beside her on the wooden bench and said, "Life is so unexpected, isn't it?"

He sighed and looked out towards Lily. His voice was heavy with despair as he spoke. "I'm sorry about..."

She flinched and moved her gaze towards the trees. "It's ok."

"No," he shook his head, "it's never ok. I know."

Her voice trembled as she spoke. "He just withered away, like those leaves. I couldn't do anything."

He sighed and stood up from the bench. "Come on, Tinker Bell. Let's go for a walk." He smiled and called out to Lily, "Little Lily! Time for some more magic?"

"Yes!" Her daughter squealed and skipped through the leaves towards them. She held out her little hand towards Koel and said, "Come, Mummy."

Her daughter's little fingers felt strangely warm in her own. She watched with a smile as Lily linked her little arm through his.

He turned towards Koel and grinned. "We never really got to be friends then, Tinker Bell. How about now? A new beginning?"

Lily giggled and asked, "Why do you call her Tinker Bell, silly?"

Koel laughed and said, "I don't know, Lily bee." She glanced at him and said, "Strange how we never asked each other our names."

He shrugged and said, "It didn't matter. Anyway, you might want to remember that my name is actually Aakash."

"And I'm Koel."

"The bird."

She nodded as they started walking through the path, scattered with a fresh layer of leaves. A bird who has lost her wings, she thought to herself.

***

Aakash walked ahead of Koel, his fingers gently curled around Lily's. Sometimes, he lifted Lily into his arms so she could throw her head back, her dark hair dancing in the wind, and feel the yellow and crimson leaves fall on her face.

Koel paused near a Sycamore tree and her gaze travelled up to the patches of clear blue sky, visible through the shades of yellow and red. A chilly autumn wind blew through the trees and locks of her jet-black hair fell across her eyes. The wind rustled the leaves and she saw a cluster of leaves detach themselves from the boughs of the tree and sway towards the ground. She opened her palm and watched one of the leaves sway this way and that before softly landing on her palm. She felt its withering surface on her palm, her eyes fixed on the splotches of green slowly fading into yellow. Her life suddenly felt like the autumn leaves: slowly withering away into nothingness. She wondered what would happen when the trees suddenly went bare. The start of winter scared her. For it would be a winter without him, a Christmas without him. The leaves will be back again, fresh ones, but the old leaves, like the one she held in her palm, would be lost forever.

She didn't realise when Aakash had stepped beside her, placing his palm gently under hers. She blinked back the tears that had suddenly appeared in her eyes and whispered, "How do they do it every year? The trees... how do they give up the leaves that cling to their very branches?"

"It's not like they have a choice." He slanted her palm and the leaf fell away into the sea of yellow, blending in with the rest of the leaves. His gaze met hers and she had a feeling that he knew exactly what she was going through.

"You can never let go of memories." He smiled bleakly and glanced towards Lily in the distance, playing with the leaves. "You just make room for new ones. The trees might be bare for the winter, but remember, they always wait for spring. For new beginnings."

He poked her cheek and said, "Come on, Tinker Bell. Take a step. Spring is waiting for you." He caught a maple leaf from the air and placed it into her open palm. She watched the shades of yellow and orange, gently blending into each other as he said, "Withering leaves don't mean fading memories. It means you remember something in its most beautiful and colourful form." He closed her fingers over the leaf. "Remember that. Let the bird fly."

"Come on!" Lily tugged at his hand and Koel saw the dimple appear on his cheek again.

"Coming, little Lily!" He grinned and started to walk away, his head still turned towards her.

Koel smiled, and called out to him, "Hey Robin Hood!"

"What?" He shouted back.

"Why did you leave me your tree house?"

He paused, the dimple deepening on his cheek. "Because I felt like I could trust you with my house of leaves."

Like Autumn Leaves

Another day another life
Passes by just like mine
It's not complicated..

Another mind
Another soul
Another body to grow old
It's not complicated..

Do you ever wonder if the stars shine out for you?
Float down
Like autumn leaves..

Hush now
Close your eyes before the sleep
And you're miles away
And yesterday you were here with me..

The autumn leaves are soothing, sun-kissed and warm, painted in yellows, reds and oranges. They make you feel safe, welcome and blessed; dancing around you aimlessly, daring you to reach out and touch them. But they won't be there for long. There's no point in touching them really; they won't always be with you. They will be gone before your eyes when the cold turns them over to death.

The changing seasons would always leave him restless, when the summer heat dissolved smoothly into the occasional chill in the wind and leaves started to fall and burn right before of his eyes. Despite the warm hues of foliage spread over miles, the smells of rich homemade pies and the crunch of ripe, plump apples, somehow he had always related Autumn to sadness..

But not anymore..

A single maple leaf painted in warm hues of gold broke free from its place on the tree and fell to the ground, littering the dusty, barren floor beneath. He stood up from the wooden bench to pick it up and placed it between the pages of the book he was reading.

He remembers sitting on the steps of his old house with a cup of hot chocolate, and her.

He loved the feel of her warm body snuggled against his, her face sporting several emotions at once, from hope to happiness while she scribbled away in her tiny notebook. He recollected the way she would often take a few breaks from writing to walk through the crunching leaves beneath her feet, whilst admiring the trembling delicate leaves or the marvelous palette of pinks and oranges in the autumn sky. She loved everything about the season of leaves. And he loved her..

His mind wanders to the first time he had met her.. It was astonishing that he still remembered the first time they had met.. The memories were hazy, but undeniably there; magical, like their first Fall together..

---

He was nine and she was six. He had grown up with no siblings and she had been the new neighbor who lived conveniently across the street.

It was Halloween and he was dressed up as the Green Arrow, his favorite comic character. He had been begging his mother to take him trick-or-treating right from the very minute he had finished pinning the hood to his costume. But his mother was still in the kitchen, doing things that were more important than taking her only son on a treasure hunt filled with candy corn and Twix bars. His patience was wearing thin and he was about to lock himself in his room to sulk the night away, when the doorbell rang and he raced towards it.

His eyes caught a flash of white through the fluttering curtains and he quickened his steps. His hands were shaking with excitement while he unlocked the door. It was time to give out candies and he couldn't help being excited. He knew there had to be a kid outside, dressed in a brilliant costume which he would get to see and even be the reason for a smile on someone else's face.

But it was only when he opened the door that his eyes went wide as saucers.

"Trick-or-treat!" a high-pitched feminine voice drifted with the playful wind, carrying the same excitement as his.

He just stared at the girl in front of him for a moment longer than he should have. His new neighbour stood at the door, holding onto her mother's hand. She was dressed in a confection of white frills, with ribbons in her hair, and eyes twinkling with intrigue and amusement as she looked at the bowl of candies he was holding.

"Trick-or-treat!", she squealed again.

He looked at her, half amused by her choice of outfit, and blurted out the first thing that came to his mind, "That's a funny dress." She gaped and he immediately felt sorry for having taunted her like that, but she was different.

She laughed..

"Happy Halloween..", he wished her, the childlike excitement had returned. He didn't think much. Anyone who dressed in a costume for Halloween was cool enough to be his friend.

She got impatient and began staring at the huge pumpkin bowl in his hands, drawing his attention. He shoved it at her without hesitation, "Here! We have candies and Snickers and Caramel bars.." Her eyes twinkled at the sight and she then peeped behind him to check if her mother was out of sight.

Holding out her pillowcase, she beamed at him with a grin and he knew it was his decision to make. He practically poured the entire bowl of candies into her pillowcase and leaned in closer, "I won't tell your Mom."

"What's your name?", she asks with a playful grin playing on her lips.

"Aarav."

"Thank you, Aarav. I'm Aanya.""

Aarav's face began to flush with colour from all the attention he received from her and he quietly slipped out of his house, shouting out to his mother.

They ran out into the crisp autumn evening, holding hands and munching on the corn candies.

They had no idea that the wheels were set in motion. In that moment, they were just two little kids excited to have found a new friend, and eager to fill their pillow cases with candies..

And that is how it began..

---

Leaves.. It was always so hard to understand them. They start out green and vibrant, and then slowly turn into yellow, red and orange. They change.. And so had their relationship..

He was eighteen and she was fifteen.

They've been best friends for years now and inseparable. Ever since their first Halloween together, they've become a bit of a package deal. Aarav walked across the street to her house every morning before they both make their journey to high school. At lunch, although they're three grades apart, she always managed to find him on days when she carried his favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Autumn was now their favorite season, between the two of them. They loved the warm and cozy summers, and the cold and festive winters but there was something special about the season of leaves; it was odd to point out.

A brown leaf spiraled through the air, and she leapt towards it, trying to grab it. But a gust of wind blew, and it flew away, opting to land elsewhere.

"Werewolf, really?" Aanya tried very hard not to roll her eyes but when he gave her a deathly glare, she burst out laughing.

"Woman! It's Halloween. It's a full moon on Halloween." Aarav pointed towards the sky and dragged her towards the community hall.

"Whatever." He snorted at her when she kept teasing him, despite his exasperated glares.

"Wait", he patted her calf when he bent down to tie his shoe laces. "Why are you wearing leather pants?"

Aanya cinched the belt of her coat a little tighter than before and held her breath. She'd be mortified if he teased her. She huffed and ran into the hall, to join her girlfriends leaving him alone.

He has been waiting for her for the last 10 minutes. The shrill sound of nails being scrapped down blackboards and the shaking floor resonates through the room. He swears he could see shadowy outlines of something gliding through the room, dipping just above his head before it circles back up to the ceiling. And he gulps. It was just his imagination. It was just a freaking Halloween fair on the outskirts of London.. He's perfectly fine..

And the next moment, he's not.

Suddenly, he's attacked from behind. Out of nowhere, a figure jumped on him and his only response is to scream. The voice came out high-pitched and girly, but he doesn't care at the moment, because whatever it was had gripped him in a bear hug. Before he could even move, that thing was biting down on his neck.

And then he heard her hiss in pain. He had broken her fake canines.

"Aarav", she cries out, her voice choking and squeaking when he has her pinned to the wall behind her. Despite the terror still racing through him from just a few moments ago, he looked unusually calm.

"Caught you.", His eyes wander over her petite form. She's dressed in black leather pants and a black silk cape, with her lips painted bright red.

She sulks in silence, clutching the fake canines in her palm and then walks away when he calls her a funny fake vampire.

"And that squeal you let out? Very wolf-like, huh?", she turns around and teases again and disappears into the darkness, her laughter rings in the air around him.

And he smiles to himself.. If only he could tell her that she didn't look funny at all.

She had become one of his dearest friends long ago, and he certainly thought her beautiful, there wasn't any hesitation there. She could read him like an open book and had solutions to his problems even before he could voice them aloud. Sometimes, to his annoyance, he would find himself utterly spellbound and captivated by her, that he would miss out on half a conversation.

His little girl had been ruling over his heart for a while now, but he wanted to wait for the right time to tell her that.

---

He was twenty-five and she was twenty two.

She whipped her hair around her face and turned to look at his window. It was Halloween again, but this one was perhaps the worst she had, had in years. Aarav had been visiting a patient in Wales and she doubted he would make back it that night.

She saw the lights in his room flicker and sprang to her feet. Pulling out a warm jumper from her closet, she set off in search of him. Gone was the frown on her face, he had returned. He always did..

The front door barely opened. She found it strange at first, and had to push herself against it for it to budge. But when it did open, it squeaked and she creaks ominously.

Aanya got in quickly, when something sticky inches across her forehead. She flails her arms in the air and tries to wipe the gluey strands off her face and hair. Gross.. When did spider webs form in his house?

She called out his name, but it only echoed back to her. The lights were out; she could barely see anything except for an eerie orange glow that seemed to float through the open kitchen door.

She clutched her dress around her waist and began to take cautious steps inside. She could make out a few silhouettes and narrowed her eyes to take a closer look.

Was that a tree? It felt like plastic, but it was definitely supposed to be a tree. She looks up and finds branches and fake green leaves hanging over her head.

She rushes towards the kitchen door and in a hurry stumbles upon small glowing orange pebbles, illuminating what looked like a trail.

A skeleton hung from the ceiling just inside the kitchen door and she almost shrieked. Something slimy and wet brushes against her face, and she squeals again, but this time out of excitement.

She nudges the backdoor open with her foot and stops, for a moment. A small gravestone blocks her path, with a bloody hand sticking to it.

Her heart hammers in her chest, as she realizes what it meant. He had built her a Halloween maze; her own ghost, magical Halloween forest..

She dodges the things that come sticking out from the ground and cuts through the twining fake creepers, finding her way through the orange glow lights.

She hadn't seen him for an entire week, but the moment she reached the end of her trail, all traces of longing vanished into thin air. He stood there, dressed in a black hoodie and dark denims, surrounded by glowing carved pumpkins.

"Do you like it?", he asks as he begins circling her.

She smiles, with a hint of tender shyness that he felt was so intimate and beautiful. "Best surprise ever."

"I think I have a better one." he grins and she gives him a look of disbelief.

She couldn't imagine anything that would top this, but then he goes down on one knee and holds out a box of corn candies for her.

"Will you marry me?"

Her heart stops beating for a moment, and her eyes fill up with warm tears of joy. She grins through teary eyes, and slides down to the floor beside him. A wide smile spreads across his face, and he wraps his arms around her, tucking her into his embrace.

She picks up an orange coloured candy and pops it into her mouth, "Yes."

He grins, scratches his head absently and leans in to peck her cheek, and the next she knew he had hoisted her up in the air and was twirling her around.

The fallen foliage crunched lightly beneath their footsteps, being a silent witness to their togetherness.

---

He was thirty three and she was thirty..

He bounces his little daughter on his arm and her pink lace pillow case in the other. It was a cool autumn evening, the air carried a faint smell of freshly baked pumpkin pies and cinnamon sticks.

Seven years ago, he got married to Aanya in a beautiful garden, littered with leaves in a brilliant montage of orange and red and yellow.

There was no Halloween party, but they were dressed in matching costumes again, as a man and bride. Instead of the usual trick-or-treating, there was an exchange of rings, vows were made and a lifetime sealed with a kiss.

They were now blessed with a daughter who was a spitting image of her mother's innocence and had her father's unruly charm. Being married felt different, they had their shares of ups and downs and nasty fights but in the end, it was their unflinching faith in each other and boundless love that triumphed over everything.

Leaves crackle under their feet, as they make their way to the next house on the street. Their little one is all smiles, and trots up the steps as soon as her father put her down. They watch on proudly, when she knocks on the door, trying to stump their neighbours with her identity.

He wraps an arm around his wife who had a content smile tugging at her lips.

"She makes the cutest butterfly ever.", Aanya exclaimed and turned to her husband. She saw her happiness mirrored in his eyes and in that instant, fell in love with him all over again.

Aarav picks up his daughter, when she jumps and skips towards them, with her mouthful of corn candies.

"Shouldn't you be fluttering, Aru?" he asks her while wiping her mouth with a tissue.

She starts giggling, folds her arms close to her body in an impression of the bright coloured wings attached to her back, as her shoulders shake.

He hears his wife's laugh and tosses their daughter in the air, before cocooning her in his arms again.

Aanya stops next to him when little Aru hops across their neighbour's garden. She pops a few candies into her mouth and feeds him a couple.

"So, what do you have to say about her costume, my love?", she waggles her brows at him and leans into his open embrace.

Grinning, he wraps his arms around her and presses a kiss to her forehead, "Way better than my Ninja turtle.."

---

He is sixty-nine and she was sixty-six..

He sits at the edge of the lake, scribbling in his wife's personal diary. Although it was cold and windy outside, he had the sudden urge to take a stroll along the graveyard where his beloved was now put to rest.

A gust of wind blew against the leaves lying on the ground, rustling them and piling them onto one another. He picks up a pale brown leaf among the hundreds of red and yellow ones.

His life had come in full circle and now Sixty Halloweens and Thanksgivings later, he understood the leaves better than ever..

They start out as fresh, green foliage drenched with drops of dew, and then fade to warm hues of yellow, red and orange as they pass through life, filling lives with colours, but they're dying from within. And when they can give no more, they wither away into a dark brown and are reunited with the earth, before the start of winter. The warm soil absorbs them into itself and shelters their innocence deep in its womb..

Aarav still wakes up every day with an urge to feel his love, but she's out of his reach, just like the dead fluttering leaves..

Her death had devastated him once, but he soon realised that she would never be too far away from him.. She was right beside him, for it's her season. She loved the Fall..

He loses himself in the whipping of the wind and the crunch of leaves, because he knows she would always be around, watching over him.

He loves the her as much as he did back then.. Like autumn leaves..

Is it that it's over or do birds still sing for you?
Float down
Like autumn leaves

Hush now
Close your eyes before the sleep
And you're miles away
And yesterday you were here with me..

Touch down
Like a seven four seven
Stay out and we'll live forever now..

Moving On

'I do',Vowed Sam,the love of my life.

Everything about today was flawless.A huge tent had been erected in the backyard, providing a canopy for the enormous guest attending the wedding. The once plain and gloomy backyard had been beautified with an abundance of white and pink flowers and knotted ribbons.Fairy lights hung upon the graceful green trees lining the backyard.

Building up mental images of my Sam and myself, dressed in our respective wedding attires on our very own wedding had been my ultimate fantasy.

Everything was perfect.Except...I was not the bride.

The utterance of those binding words finally sealed Sam and Emily's love in a more secure bond of marriage.Sam held his wife's hand securely to his as they were handed through the crowd, passed from embrace to embrace, everyone expressing words of congratulations to them.Sam was attired in a light grey morning suit.Emily was clad in a gorgeous designer wedding dress which was a classic, nipped in at the waist for shape and falling in Flour folds at her satin-clad feet. She wasn't wearing a veil, her hair had been piled up and topped with magnificent sapphire and diamond tiara.Matching drop earrings sparkled with every movement she made.

'Nilopher?'

I turned to my side when I heard jas gently call my name.Jas,one of my friends had also studied in the same school along with Sam and myself.Jas was far too perceptive, having a faint knowledge about my feelings.

'Are you okay?',Jas asked, her voice laced with concern.

'Yeah',I lied as I flashed her my most convincing smile.

She gave my hand a gentle squeeze and then scurried away.Sighing,my eyes riveted back to Sam.His entire face was so full of life. His eyes were the most marvelously bright as he gazed at his wife with admiration.I'd been mistaken about his feelings, secretly hoping he mirrored my same feelings. But,I was just his best friend.

Tears were beginning to well in my eyes and my heart gave a not-so-gentle squeeze of its own.Just then,Sam briefly tore his eyes away from emily, his gaze swiveling around. As soon as our eyes locked across the backyard,a flicker of smile passed across his face and he fluttered forward, shouldering his way through the guests.

My insides were a flutter, but what mattered the most was my outer persona.Scooping in a quick breath I tried to pull myself together.

'Nilopher,Can you believe it?I am already married!',Sam gushed, embracing me warmly.

Hugging him briefly for a second I pulled back and nodded my head profusely, not trusting my voice.

He cocked his head slightly to one side as he studied my face.'You're crying?',he asked in a surprised tone.

I shook my head from side to side, gulping down my tears and managed to summon up a smile though my insides were hurting.

'I am just so happy for you',I murmured,my voice thick with emotion. It wasn't a lie.I was truly happy for him.

'Just weeks ago I had met Emily at a coffee shop. You know,I was never the one to believe in love at first sight. But,I guess Emily is everything I have wished for',he spoke in a soft adorning tone.

'Emily is truly great',I agreed.She was a fun-loving girl,extremely sweet and adorable.

'Sam!'

We distinctively heard his mother's call.He smiled apologetically.I gave him a playful punch on his arm and added,'Go bridegroom, you're needed'.

He took a step forward, placing a quick peck on my cheeks and then whirled around and strode towards his family.

'It's time',I murmured to myself.I need to let him go.A spurt of tears blurred my vision as I looked at Sam for one last time. His brown eyes. The bend in his nose, the mole on his right cheek and the small scar on his chin. All the tiny imperfections that made him beautiful.

I took a step back, instantly feeling a dull dragging sense of loss.I swallowed, trying to dislodge the sudden lump in my throat.I could feel some gnawing feeling surfacing, something I knew I was not ready to face yet.Without wasting another second,I turned around and made my way towards the gate.

As soon as I had stepped inside my apartment,I slammed the door shut.I crushed down feeling the smooth wooden floor beneath my knees, and then the palms of my hand, and then it was pressed against the skin on my cheeks. Finally, the harsh, gnawing pain I had fought at Sam's wedding crushed me in a deliberating wave, jarring my senses, leaving me weak and isolated.

Sobs escaped my lips, and huge tears rolled down my cheeks.'Why me?',I wailed,my heart clenched painfully.

Why wasn't my life a fairy tale? Why wasn't I entitled to happy endings?I hadn't done any wrong nor had I wished any pain to be inflicted on others. Then, why am I being punished?

I don't know how long I lay lifeless. My eyes were sore from all the crying,my head ached and my whole body felt stiff.I tried to scramble to my feet, failing a few times.Whimpering,I finally managed to stagger to my room.I quietly climbed into my bed and lay against the pillow.

A month rolled by.

The faint light woke me up.Dull gray light, the familiar light of an overcast morning filtered through the glass window, spreading a faint light through my entire room.

I forced myself to a sitting position.I pulled my knees up,wrapped my arms around them and then put my chin on my knees.

For one whole month,I cried.Cried till I couldn't breathe, cried till I could fall asleep, cried at the hopelessness of my situation, cried knowing it was over, cried till the realization hit me that we were never meant to be.Now I've gone for too long, living like I'm not alive.I had been wallowing in sadness and self pity, the pain pushing me into a deep darkness of seemingly bottomless chasm.

But,last night sudden realization dawned upon me.Realization of finding a balance between darkness and light. And,that realization was like a rope of light led down into the dark pit.

I knew there is no remedy to my pain than to begin from the point of absolute darkness.Drawing in a deep breath,I crawled out of the bed.

I scrambled into a jeans and T-shirt and then raked a comb through my hair, pulling it in a tight ponytail. Not caring to glance at my reflection in the mirror and ignoring the mess my apartment was in,I strode towards the kitchen and gulped down a glass of orange juice and then headed towards the door.

I hadn't stepped out for one whole month.A ripple of unease spread through me as I pushed open the front door.Hesitation rose within me as I stood outside the door debating internally whether to embrace something unknown and new or return back to the familiar darkness I had learned to depend upon.Deciding against it,I locked my front door, pushing my key in my pant pocket and trudged down the stairs.A sane and small part of me knew it wasn't healthy to slump in dejection.

It felt weird as I dawdled through the sidewalk.A cool wind began to blow making a low, mumbled crackling sound causing the movement of dried leaves along the pavement. My eyes strayed to a small girl whose hands flew up to her skirt which swayed and rustled due to the impact of the wind.An old man walking ahead of me was struggling to keep his hat intact .

Autumn was the my favorite season of the year but right now it just felt unusual and unsettling.I strolled aimlessly wondering why God had not granted the only love I had longed for. What was destiny's plan for me?

It seemed like I had walked for quiet sometime now.My feet slowed down as I noticed the much too familiar surroundings. The same trees lining the sidewalk, the familiar red walls and the strong sense of familiarity in the air around me.

My feet halted as I now stood before the magnificent black gate of my school building. The lane was deserted, nor was there a student visible.I realized it was Sunday. As I stared back at the huge building in front of me I felt an unknown mesmeric pull towards it.My feet moved forward without a conscious thought.

The guard at the gate arose from his chair as his face lit instantly,a hint of recognition flickered through his eyes.He pressed a button.Very slowly, with a loud creaking of rusty hinges, the great iron gates of the school began to swing open.

I slid inside and was instantly greeted with the guard's warm smile. He had grown more old over the years. His skin was soft and withered, bent into a thousand tiny creases resembling a dried apricot. His white hair were growing thin but,he still managed to retain the youthful brightness in his eyes,

'Nilopher!',he acknowledged my presence, giving me a beaming smile.

My eyes opened wide with shock.'You remember?'

'I am not likely to forget the naughtiest girl who'd main a was to spread happiness everywhere she goes'.

I sighed for the days gone by.

'How are you?',he queried.

'I am fine',I mumbled with a forced smile.

He gazed at me intently for a few moments and then he lifted his hand running it affectionately through my hair.'When things seem at their worst, their are about to start improving',he said with a feeling.

'I ll just have a look around',I mumbled softly with a forced smile.

He smiled and nodded his head.

My legs moved slower and slower as my eyes took in the whole place. The ornamental fountain still stood in the middle of grassland from which a few jets of water pumped into the air.Everything was pretty much the same be it the long corridors, wooden chairs, playground and the large field connected to it.Here I am back to school, the place I cherished the most.

My heart felt like it was going to swell up and burst through my chest as I strode towards the field, the place Sam and I use to hangout the most.

My whole body went numb,I couldn't feel anything below my neck as a host of memories rushed through my mind.

'Sam what are you doing!',I asked with irritation as he busied himself with an autumn leaf, scribbling something on it.

'I am just writing a few lines. You do know it's like a tradition in our school to write a few lines on the fallen leaves'

I rolled my eyes at him.'I think everyone needs to grow up'

'I think it's a nice concept.',he argued mildly.

Sighing in defeat I held out my hand and asked him to show what he had written.Reluctantly,he handed the leaf to me whilst reciting the words loudly.

'If I am alone, she'd be my shadow
If I am weepy,she'd be a shoulder.
If I wanted a hug,she'd be a teddy,
Anything I wanted her to do,without a doubt she'd be ready.
Her jokes make me laugh till my face turns blue
What I'd done without Nilopher,I have no clue
But,just to be together forever,I'd like to stick our bodies with magic glue'

A smile tugged at my lips.I turned towards him and ruffled his hair.'That's cute but promise me you'd never think of becoming a poet or a writer'.

'It wasn't that bad',he grumbled, his lower lip protruding in a sulky pout.

I nodded my head in agreement.'You're right it was not bad.It was very very very bad!',I teased and started guffawing at him.

'Your dead',he said in a warning tone as he lunged towards me.

My eyes popped up wide with alarm and I wasted no time in turning on my heels and running for my life, our laughter echoing through the field as he chased me.

Another stray memory flashed across my mind . Halloween was celebrated at school.I stood in the middle of the field attired in a black cloak and pointed hat, carrying a broomstick depicting the character of a witch.

When suddenly out of nowhere,'Boo!'cried a ghost face mask which is based on the scream painting by Edward Munch.

I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that it was Sam disguised behind the mask.

Sticking out my tongue at Sam I started giggling.'I am not that easy to scare,Sam'.

'Hey,how did you know it's me?',he complained in a grumpy tone.

I gave a dismissive shrug whilst I dropped my eye in a wink.'Call it my evil magic powers'.

Instead of taking part in the various Halloween activities we engaged ourselves in taking pictures of each other.

'Let me remove this mask for a few seconds',muttered Sam as he proceeded to remove his mask.

Chewing on my lower lip briefly for a second I then let out high pitched, piercing scream.

'What's wrong?',he queried in an anxious voice.

'Gosh! You gave me a scare,Sam.Your face is much scarier than that mask'.

'Ha,ha ha.Very funny!',he retorted.

I got a fit of giggles.'You should have seen your face.'

He rolled his eyes.'That joke was in a very bad taste'.

Another memory surfaced at the true front of my mind.Though, thanksgiving was an annual national holiday we'd always manage to sneak inside our school and celebrate this auspicious day with our group of friends in our own way.

Sam,jas and myself along with our other group of friends sat around in a circle.Instead of the traditional turkey we'd manage to get a full tub of chicken wings and a few sandwiches .Clasping each other's palms we closed our eyes praying for the well being of our friends and asking a special wish .

'Dear God,please let all of Sam's wishes come true',I prayed silently.

A few moments later, very slowly my eyes flew open.Looking around,I sighed as I noticed my friends had already binged on food.

Sam was chewing a mouthful of sandwich. Not able to suppress my curiosity I bent forward and whispered into his ears.'What did you ask for?'

He chuckled.'I asked for us to always remain best friends'.

There was a big whoosh of the air snapping me back to reality.

I blinked my eyes twice,my knees were knocking and breath was escaping my lips in puffs. Why had I always tried to find hiding meanings behind his words? The memories which I had cherished the most now did nothing but leave behind pain and sadness.Spotting a wooden chair I staggered forward and quietly slumped down onto the chair.

I watched autumn leaves fluttering to the ground, reminding me of nature's cycle which mirrored my own life.Autumn is a time for letting go and releasing things that have been a burden.

Sam is a closed door.It took a lot of hurt, tears, pain, distress and agony to get to the other side and accept that Sam and my feelings for him is a book which should be already closed, ended, and tossed into a drawer. And,I knew moving on should first start with a goodbye.

Drifting my eyes closed and inhaling deeply I let it go.I felt right as I freed myself of that heavy weight that had been crushing me since long.

I finally felt free.

A wind began to blow and an autumn leaf blew into my face.My hands flew up as I pulled the leaf off my face.Just when I was about to throw the leaf away,my eyes fell on words written on the leaf.

'Don't loose hope when your plan's go astray or your wishes remain unfulfilled.Always remember,The All Mighty has planned much better things for you'

A shiver ran down my spine.

As I stared at those words I had an intuitive conviction that there was a sense of righteousness in those words.

'Nilopher?'

My head flew up and my eyes locked with a pair of green eyes.An attractive looking man clad in a blue faded jeans and white T shirt with strong rough hewn features stared back at me in rampant surprise.

'Do I know you?',I queried ,confused.

He let out a chuckle and sank down on the bench besides me.'Do you remember the fat kid who always tried to impress you by cracking the silliest of jokes?'

My brows pinched together as my mind reeled, trying to recall anyone that suit his description. As I gazed his face, sudden recognition dawned upon my face.

'Chris!',I exploded in surprise.

'Yes'

He had changed drastically, his face had lost his roundness, making his cheeks and face look prominent and attractive.

'What are you doing here at school?'

'I was just passing by and I felt a strong urge to come here.I am glad I followed my instincts',he answered in a soft tone.

I just gazed at him blankly.

'I though I'd never meet you',He mumbled and then sighed.'How's Sam,jas and everyone else?'

'Sam got married..'

'Oh,so you both got married?',he concluded in a shocked and sad tone.

My throat tightened.Apparently,he was mistaken.'No.He got married to Emily, the girl he met at a coffee shop and fell in love with.'

'Oh,so I still got a chance to impress and win the heart of the only girl I have ever loved',he teased making me roll my eyes at him.It was in his nature,he flirted endlessly with me and had a happy knack of making people like him.

'When are you ever going to be serious',I chided mildly.

'I am serious'.he said, staring at me with a strange intensity.I gasped, tearing my eyes away from his smoldering gaze.

'Chris?'I managed to whisper.

He let out a chuckle.'I could also try a hand at acting.Being the owner of a fashion house is boring as hell'

Smacking his head I sighed in relief.

'Someone lost a lot of weight?',I teased.

He grinned wolfishly.'I hit the gym, lost a couple of pounds.Figured, girls don't really like chubby men'.

'Hey,you were cute back then'

He shook his head in wonderment.'Only you use to find me cute and hilarious'.

I heaved a sigh.

'Hey,Nilopher?Do you know the difference between a calendar and me?',He asked in an animated tone.

My brows pinched together as I chewed on my lips reflectively, thinking of a possible answer,my mind coming up with nothing.

'The calendar has dates !'.

I giggled quietly. The sound took me by surprise. Then I started laughing, actually laughing. The joke wasn't hilarious, the way he told it was funny.

He smiled looking at me and for the first time I felt happy.

'So,now that we have met after years I'd like to stay in touch. That much, that you'd get fed up of me'

'I think I'll manage as long as you make me laugh'.

He chuckled and rose, tall and lithe.

'Want to grab a cup of coffee?',He asked as he held out his hand in front of me.
