It Has Always Been You
"Here is your order, Gentleman" She placed the tray on the table, alerting the guy who was engrossed on his mobile.
"Arjun?" She exclaimed in shocked disbelief unable to believe the scenario happening in front of her. Infact it is not any scene but very much real, the guy who had haunted her dreams so long was actually sitting on the chair, that too here in a foreign land. Is this another brutal game of destiny?
"Dr. Anya Gupta?? What a surprise! You are here? WOW! Can't believe this! What are you doing here as a waitress? And when did you come to San Francisco? Anya? Excuse me! Dr. Anya Gupta! Hellooo!" He finally completed his series of questions at one go; waving his both the hands to bring her out of abstraction.
"Heyyy! Arjun! Hi! I can't believe this! Be seated." Quickly coming back to earth, she indicated the chair while he gave her the 'Not before you' look.
After sitting on the chair opposite to him, Anya confirmed this definitely as one of the cruel game of destiny. How much she wanted to run away from him! As if Shimla was not enough, now in San Francisco? And this round table seating arrangement reminded her of something else.
Anya Gupta, a successful obstetrician always had only one weakness in her entire life and that is the man sitting opposite her. The distraction', she concluded about him years ago. As her first real crush in school, her world would start and end with Arjun Verma. Her thoughts went back to schooldays, where once she sat across from him in this same manner, and instead of food tray there was a chess board.
It was another rainy day in Shimla, and as usual their Physical Training hour was disrupted. However, their Trainer cheered the pupils with the announcement of indoor games. And chess was the main attraction that day. Whoever competed in the match returned to their places within minutes as the opponent was none other the National Level Chess Player Arjun, the pride of St. Peters school. The whole class gave up the idea and engrossed themselves in other indoor activities like table tennis. And that was when Anya decided to try her hand in the board game and adjusted the chair to sit while focusing on the eight-by-eight grid. She tactically moved every piece with full concentration and finally she did the unbelievable. She won the match by attacking the king, leaving no chance for Arjun, but to accept his defeat, leaving everyone in shock. But her happiness was not in winning the match but in those minutes she sat across him. It was an achievement for her. Only she knows how she managed to survive those forty five minutes having the whole class witnessing the nail biting match.
"Anya? Back to the earth?" Arjun snapped his fingers to get her attention.
"Sorry. What were you asking?" Anya replied, mentally pushing her thoughts aside.
"Ermm.. I asked you many things, first being what are you doing here in this restaurant, in this city? I thought you are a physician, in India." Arjun again asked in surprise.
"Uh.. Yes I am. Actually, this is my Aunt's restaurant and I am just helping her here."
"Cool! It is so pleasant to see you in SF." He replied sipping the coffee he ordered.
"And what are you doing here?" She asked him finally.
"Well, I was craving for some good Desi food and checked for the best Indian Restaurant in this locality and here I am."
"No. I meant your visit to US. Any work or holidaying?"
"I wish. But definitely, not for a vacation! I'm here for a business deal. It's kind of an amalgamation with an organization here. Hopefully it will be finalized before Halloween or at least by Thanksgiving public holidays, so that we will be able to export goods here for the Christmas vacations or early next year. So every day I'm attending two-three meetings with the firms here and numerous video-conferences with Dad to update the details. When required I travel to other places in California. And my team will do the rest of the work." He sighed explaining the structure of his work to Anya.
"Phew! That's really a tiring one. Totally a business man in action, eh?" She smiled.
"Yes, Totally. A busy man! And what about you, Doctor?"
"Actually, my cousin is expecting her first child and besides my Bua just went through a surgery. So I took three months off from the hospital and came here to take care of them. But, here they are not letting me do anything. My brother-in-law takes complete care of everything. So I came here to the restaurant today. I feel so bored without work."
"So, a Doctor is missing her action, eh?"
They spoke for another few minutes but soon the customers started to pour in and they had no other option but to end their conversation.
Later that night, sleep was the last thing to reach Anya. She had a tough time trying to forget her meet with Arjun. But it won't go at all. Her thoughts went down the memory lane remembering all those events happened in Shimla years ago. Anya sure had a crazy crush on Arjun since her 8th grade. Initially she rubbed it off as a teenage infatuation. As the years moved on, her infatuation started to grow into unknown feelings. Something made her realize that, Arjun is not just a mere crush anymore. Though she tried to focus on her studies and maintained the topper stature in class, He was always a distraction for her and she was totally obsessed with him. She remembered her saving all those school magazines which had his photographs, back in her Shimla bedroom. And those exam halls, she always looked forward to them just for a crazy reason. Having both their names starting with A, and being his previous number on roll, she always sat on the front bench. Like every time he used to copy the answers from her, she had absolutely no complaints in displaying the answer sheets. It felt good. Since Anya was a topper and Arjun being the school player, no one doubted them.
After getting into the medical school, she tried a lot to forget him and move on. She even tried dating the guys from the university but it never crossed more than one dinner date. She compared every guy with Arjun, thus the relationships ended up as quickly as it formed; it never lasted more than one week. Although he was always in her thoughts she never let the sadness of missing him take over her. After years' concentration, when she was all set in her career and fully focused in her job, she met him last year again in her friend's wedding.
After eight years of schooling, she had hoped all her crazy teenage hormones will be gone. But it became worst than before. After seeing him as the man he has become, she was left breathless. A young business tycoon managing his father's empire and getting the "Young Entrepreneur of the Year" was no joke. If all that was not enough, the destiny had to play a cunning game and make her meet him again today after a year. From Shimla to San Francisco! What an improvement!
In the next two weeks, Anya met Arjun more often than she would imagine. Since it was fall, the colour and fallen off autumn leaves, gave a beautiful vision to human eyes. It totally added a romantic touch to the whole atmosphere. Anya and Arjun bonded quickly and ended up visiting many places and beaches in the city together. Her favorite was the drive with him across the Golden Gate Bridge. They hung out a lot and he became a regular customer to her Aunt's restaurant, visiting it every evening after his work. Anya finally friend zoned her feelings and tried to maintain a composed stature around him.
---
"So, are you in a relationship? Do you have any boyfriend?" Arjun asked curiously looking at Anya, who was busy adding pepper to her soup.
"No. Why?" She asked and continued her work.
"Just asking" He shrugged his shoulders and concentrated on his food.
"And you?" She asked him with a curious look on her face as well.
"Me? I have many boyfriends." He laughed.
"I meant girl friend." She replied sternly not encouraging his lame joke.
"Nope."
"Liar. I won't buy it."
"Why so?"
"Umm... 'Cause you always had a huge girls' bandwagon back in school. Even in our class, girls were crazy about you." She replied, quickly regretting what she said.
"Really? Who were they?"
"That, I cannot tell you. It's a girls' secret. Well, umm.. forget it. Forget that we have ever discussed this."
"Ahh.. Now who is lying here?"
"Not me." She said and when he gave her a not convincing look, she had no other go but to reveal a little. "Ohkaayy.. There was this girl named Preeti who studied with us for only six months. She had a huge crush on you. Enough?"
"That South Indian girl? She was hot man. If I had known before..."
"Stop right there. She is married and a mother of 3 year old now. And that was just a stupid crush. Now, she might not even remember you."
Damn! Anya clearly knew that she was blabbering now. She has breached the rules of friendship of revealing someone's secret to someone without seeking that someone's permission. She remembered how Preeti, her bench mate and friend, had a big crush on Arjun. Since they were backbenchers, they had a fair chance to stare at him across the classroom without getting caught. They used to notice his every action. Like partners in crime! One second, wasn't it supposed to be Preeti who was doing the staring business? Fortunately, No! Preeti was that awakening factor in her life. When Preeti left the school coz of her father's infamous transfer, Anya realized that whatever she feels for Arjun cannot be considered as a crazy crush anymore. Mainly it was during the flood camp in Himachal Pradesh. St. Peters' final year students joined together to help the victims of the flood in the nearby villages. They volunteered in a medical camp and that is when she saw the other side of Arjun, the generous side, the aiding side, the humanitarian side. No one would have believed that this bratty son of one of the richest tycoons' in India would come out and serve the needy in the muddy and sloppy hill side, as if that hefty amount of donation by him wasn't the huge thing. How he shrugged it off as nothing and focused only on work, when he almost slipped in elevation point. From then, nothing could stop Anya. Slowly, day by day, Anya fell so deep for him. And now She knew that this time she fell even more for him and cannot retrieve out of this intense feeling. Maybe that is the reason; she couldn't come out this distraction.
"H-e-l-l-o-ooo" He stressed out every letter, waving his hands to get her attention.
"What do you think about all the time, doctor? I asked you something. Never mind! Half the time you live in your own off world" He shrugged, sipping the coffee.
"Uh Nothing. What did you ask?" She replied, fiddling with the hem of her shrug.
"I asked is there any other girl off the record? You know, the girls."
It's me idiot, Open your freaking eyes and see. "No. None! Don't consider yourself as some heartthrob please." She snapped and looked at the other side of restaurant.
"Damn!" Anya shrieked and lowered her head to hide herself, but the damage was already done.
"Anya, what are you doing here? Am I missing something?" Nisha, Anya's cousin asked curiously looking between Arjun and Anya.
"Hi!" Arjun greeted the pregnant woman and an American guy standing next to her.
"Arjun..She is Nisha Didi, my cousin and he is George, my brother-in-law. Didi and George, he is Arjun, my friend.."
"Boyfriend, Anya. I'm Anya's boyfriend, Arjun. Glad to meet you both. Please join us." He greeted with a warm smile leaving the other three totally shocked.
"Arjun, behave yourself! Didi, he is kidding. Please sit down." She ushered, giving an angry stare at Arjun.
"Oh come on! What's there to hide, sweetheart?"
"Oh My God! Is this true Anya?" Nisha exclaimed and looked at her husband to see the surprise reflecting on his face as well.
"There is nothing, didi. Arjun, I'll kill you." Anya muttered with anxiety clearly written on her face.
"Ouch. Why do I feel that I am on the process of getting dumped by my girlfriend? Do you see any storm coming?" Arjun, with a painful face asked George and Nisha, who were suppressing their laughs; totally enjoying the scene unfolding in front of them.
"What the hell! I'm warning you the last time Arjun." Anya gritted her teeth and glared at him.
"Yes. Stop bothering my sister, Mister. And what's the proof that you are her boyfriend? Tell us your love story and we will believe you then." Nisha was enjoying every single moment of this.
"Yeah. Tell us your story. Then we will decide." George too joined his wife.
"George, there is no story at all. And Arjun, Go to hell. I'm leaving." Anya stood up in her place, ready to leave when Arjun stopped by holding her hands.
"Wait, until I finish my story darling and then we shall leave together."Anya sat down in haste and looked totally disinterested on the prank he was playing.
"Dude, you haven't started the story yet to finish it!" Nisha corrected Arjun while Anya looked at the other side, not want to hear any cooked up stories.
"Well, actually we were classmates in school. She was that topper of our class, who would put down everyone in grades. And yeah, our Class Monitor and head girl too. Phew! Too many posts..."
"Stop! This sounds more like the description of Anya and less of any love story" Nisha complained, not liking the pace of the story.
"That's pregnant woman's mood swings for you. Don't mind." George added, beckoning Arjun to continue with his story.
"Oops! Okay. Where was I? Yes, she was the popular girl in school but a level headed one. Though she was around the class all time, I first noticed her closely when she came out and challenged to beat me in chess. Though, initially she moved her pieces totally in wrong directions, I couldn't see her lose the match, I couldn't afford to see her walking away from me. I dodged the game as much I could and when I saw her happy face at winning the match, it really paid off. That smile made my day."
Anya's heart thudded wildly in her chest as she waited to hear the rest of his shocking revelations. "Not only that. She was an angel in disguise for me in the examination halls and always a helping one. She is so selfless; she tended, cared, and embraced everyone in the "Evacuee Medical Camp" with love and affection. And that is when I realized, I haven't only totally fallen for her, but the respect I had for her grew by leaps and bounds. She is entirely a god sent angel to this earth, FOR ME."
"Awww.. how sweet!" Nisha sighed and held George's hand lovingly. "But I never wanted to divert her from her aspirations. I completely adored her dreams. Hence I stayed away from her and let her live her dream. But when I saw her last year, as a bridesmaid in our classmate's wedding, I realized how much I missed her in my life. I felt very happy seeing her as one of the successful doctor in Shimla. But destiny had different plans and played a lovely game with us again. Again, we met last month in this same restaurant in San Francisco, which is still completely unbelievable and out of the box. And this time, I cannot miss the opportunity. I have wasted a lot of chances already."
"Wow, too many leaps of years' in the story. But, something is missing. Oh wait! Confession! You skipped that part. Why there is no confession scene in the story yet? When did you confess to your girlfriend?" Nisha asked raising her eyebrows.
"It's because, you are directly going to witness the original proposal scene now." Arjun completed, rising to his feet moving the chair aside and knelt down while George smiled, Nisha gasped aloud, and Anya was totally lost in the moment with her eyes wide and never leaving Arjun.
"Will you marry me, Dr. Anya Gupta? I love you very much. It Has Always Been You In My Life, Then, Now And Will Be Forever." Arjun declared holding Anya's hands and suddenly everyone in the restaurant clapped encouraging Anya to reply. Anya couldn't hear those loud "awwws" anymore, for that matter even the claps. All she can hear was her heart beating and reverberating in her ears. This was most important moment in her life, for which she was waiting from forever. And when she heard "IT" finally, she couldn't bring herself to reply. She looked at the sincerity in Arjun's eyes, which was now anticipating her response. She contemplated in her mind, not knowing how to start with her answer.
And she did reply him, in the most understandable language in the world, the language of love; she finally kissed him to convey her answer.
"It Has Always Been You for Me Too, Arjun." She said and hugged him and closed all the gaps between them.
"I know!" was all his reply and held her closer to him, not willing to let her go anytime sooner, cherishing every moment of their togetherness.

~ What the character reads in her diary.

Naina
She placed a bunch of assorted carnations on the marble stone and got up to leave. Theautumn leaves had started to wither away, giving way to a rather chilly start of winter. The gloomy and dark skies had hidden away the natural sun light, as blankets of clouds fell upon the Melbourne skies.
Kicking the fallen leaves as she went, the 25rd year old tried to keep her wild, curly tresses at bay under the cool breeze of autumn. Though not many people possessed the ability to see past the flawless and well rehearsed pretence, Ruchi brushed her hands over her wet eyes as quickly as she could, preventing her facade from moistening.
Finding a warm and secluded spot in the state library, Ruchi found her diary and flicked it open to a book marked page.
Ruchi gazed at their favourite photo. A boy and a girl sat at a random beach with balloons covering their identities, lost in each other.
She leaned in, her hand shaking uncontrollably. She wanted to stop, she wanted to scream, but most importantly, she wanted to shove some logic in his mind.
To not make her do this, to not make her a culprit of murder. Of his murder, though his eyes urged her to continue.
Despite the urgency of the situation, his eyes held a certain source of calm. Not the calm before a storm, just a deadly calm, which was proving to be silently supporting her in her deed.
The calm in his eyes was offering the doctor in the making, a form of conformation almost like signing a consent form.
With shaking arms and eyes shut close, she somehow managed to pull the mask off his tiny nose. Feeling a tug on her arm, she slowly opened her moist eyes to see the sight that would be with her forever.
A warm smile and tousled hair.
And those eyes.
Eyes that held gratitude
Pulling herself out of the reverie, Ruchi wiped her, now not stopping, tears as she fished for tissues in her over sized bag.
Every few weeks, Ruchi would place a bouquet of assorted carnations on the door step of his new home, But today she had finally gotten the courage to read her diary.
Her diary, pages which recounted their moments together. Those same moments which never fail to haunt her day and night, memories that prick her conscience every day and night.
She folded her legs under her and smiled wryly.
Memories: Fuel yet burn. These are the footprints of the heart, which can never be erased. Fuel yet burn.
"Watch where you are going! God has been so kind to you that instead of two, He has given you four eyes. Appreciate it alright!" Ruchi said with a temper, as she got down to gather her books from the floor. It had already proven to be a hectic day for her and such commotions she didn't need.
"God has given me four eyes, but He very clearly forgot to tell you to stop and think before you talk. Oh! I forgot Madam Ruchi does not think before she speaks. Ego problems, I guess" Ruchi looked up to see Siddhanth smirking like he had just won a major argument.
"Siddanth go away!"
"No I won't!"
"Fine then, be the end of my wrath" Ruchi said showcasing all her teeth in an aggressive manner.
"For a university student, you sure are as immature as hell Ruchi. Now if you don't mind" Siddanth said offering to carry Ruchi's textbooks for her.
"Do you think I am some kind of poor and dependent woman Siddanth. Mind your own business and let me carry my books"
"You and anger seem to be the best of friends recently!"
"No, not recently four eyes. We have been best of friends since as far as I can remember! You got a problem with that?"
"Why would I have a problem with Ms Egotistical?" Siddanth said as he "accidently" walked in to Ruchi, making her books fall to the floor. Yet Again.
Smiling meekly Siddanth just shrugged his shoulders and started to walk away from his Madam Egotistical, who fumed in anger instead.
Smiling sadly at their antics, Ruchi continued to flick through the pages in her diary, until another page caught her eye.
These small moments with you, I shall always treasure. These small moments with you, who needs an "I love you"?
"What are you doing here Ruchi?" Siddanth said exasperated as he opened the door to find Ruchi standing shrugging her shoulders in response. Completely ignoring Ruchi's existence, Siddanth walked back to the cough to start rote learning for his exams again.
"Pfft!" Ruchi snorted as she snapped close the textbook and threw it on the table. Sitting on his lap, Ruchi ran her fingers through Siddanth's wavy, thick hair.
"Someone is clearly in a very romantic mood" Siddanth's deep chuckle filled the air around them.
"Not romantic, No, Never. More of an urm you know" Ruchi winked at Siddanth's shocked face, before leaning in to seal his lips with hers.
"You have become bad Ruchi. Do you want me to fail tomorrow's finals?" Siddanth chuckled at Ruchi's disappointed look.
"Well, when in Rome, do as the Romans! Just like they say Siddanth" Ruchi pulled a face and got off from Siddanth's lap and started to walk to the kitchen.
"Excuse me Miss Shah but who gave you the permission to leave huh?" Siddanth caught up with Ruchi, blocking Ruchi in between the kitchen top and himself.
"I don't need permission Mr Banerjee, I am my own person" Ruchi smirked with an air of arrogance.
"Ms I-am-my-own-person, how about some ice cream for the stress I am about to go through tomorrow?" Siddanth snaked his arms around Ruchi's waist while Ruchi just narrowed her eyes at his actions.
"Just two minutes ago, someone wasn't interested, then why now? Let me go, I am actually really hungry" Ruchi pouted while wriggling her nose.
"If I leave you someday, only then will you ever value my presence." Siddanth said in Ruchi's mockery.
"Yeah right! And why would you leave me? Even I don't know why I am with a four eyes like you! If only I had waited for a better model" Ruchi pulled out her tongue.
"One day you will realise Ms Egotistical with encyclopaedias for thighs, till then let me just satiate your hunger" Siddanth said while pulling Ruchi to his hips and closing the gap between their lips.
Pulling away from Siddanth and faking anger Ruchi said, "Encyclopaedias for thighs? You want me to start four eyes?"
"Abhi nah jao chod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahi" Siddanth crooned as Ruchi rolled her eyes at his melodramatic tendencies to pacify her.
Ruchi chuckled at the memory.
Who knew what Siddanth had said out of mockery, would someday turn in to a bitter truth? The bitter truth that Ruchi had never wanted to face nor comprehend.
The independent doctor in the making had started to slowly but surely fall for the nerdy yet compassionate lawyer. Slowly but surely Ruchi too was getting consumed in her love for Siddanth, after all, love is unconquerable right?
Little had she known that her perfect little paradise was on the verge of self destruction. The bubble which Ruchi had rigged up just for her and Siddanth was about to break. Ruchi was about to be introduced to her reality.
As Ruchi continued to flick the pages of the diary, another page caught her eyes.
Courage young heart, at times all you need to do is close your eyes, take a deep breath and open them again. The world seems a whole lot simpler this way.
"What are you hiding from me Siddanth?" Ruchi said catching up to Siddanth, who was walking rather rapidly in front of her.
"There is nothing to hide Ms Egotistical!" Siddanth said with his flawless smile.
"You lawyers think you can get away with little white lies? Well you are forgetting that you are talking to a doctor here, Mr Lawyer! We too are trained to pick through all the unnecessary details!" Ruchi tried to smirk with her retort, yet worry was clearly prominent in her tone.
"I am not hiding anything Ruchi! I promise" Siddanth said cupping her cheeks, yet his eyes had given him away long ago.
Ignoring his tired and expressionless eyes, Ruchi smiled and just nodded.
"I should have known long ago." Ruchi said to herself as she closed her eyes in dismal. If only had he told her beforehand, had he not trusted her enough? To this date, this question still irked Ruchi. It still irked her that she was somehow not worthy enough of the truth, no matter how bitter it was.
Coming to the last page she had written on, Ruchi touched the tear filled page which held only one line.
I hate you.
"Where is he? How could he do this to me Michael! Who the hell does he think he is? Where is he?" Ruchi had just thrown Siddanth's file away from her eyes and was bellowing orders at a common friends' of theirs.
"Ruchi, I need you to calm down. Siddanth's wouldn't have wanted it this way!"
"Then what way did he want it Michael? For me to find out at his funeral? He told me he was going for a conference for f**k's sake!" Ruchi's eyes blazed anger.
"Ruchi, I need to get you to the hospital room now" Michael said pulling a reluctant Ruchi along with him.
The car ride for Ruchi had been a blur, just like her mind. As the sun set, giving way to a much cloudier and stormier night sky, Ruchi's mind too reflected over the storm that was brewing in her heart.
The want to scream in to the void was eating Ruchi alive. Never in her darkest nightmares had she thought that life would be so cruel by throwing in this ultimatum.
Walking as rapidly as her tiny legs would carry her weight, Ruchi's eyes never stopped leaking their own story. Her tears had completely given away what her heart had wanted to emote. Peeking in through the window on the door, Ruchi saw a lifeless body of a person in pain.
A person she didn't know.
Siddanth had never told Ruchi about his treatment, instead he had told her he was going to attend an important law conference instead.
Walking in as slowly as she could, Ruchi no longer could see Siddanth sleeping in front of her. Instead Ruchi saw a tired man with a sullen face, his skin quite yellow and eyes quite hollow. The man's weakness was evident, as several needles pricked his arms.
A skeleton on the verge of afterlife.
The pungent smell of the hospital room was adding to Ruchi's increasing nausea.
Even though training to be a doctor, Ruchi was never prepared for the sight in front of her, that too especially of someone she loves so much.
Especially of someone she loves too much.
"Ruchi, he wants you to remove his mask" Ruchi heard a voice behind her.
"Are you mad? No! He will be fine! I will be with him! The best doctors will treat him, he will fine! No cancer has been incurable, he will be fine" Ruchi said without a pause in her erratic breaths.
"You are a doctor yourself Ruchi, who are you trying to convince?"
"I can't do this"
Ruchi touched Siddanth's face, his eyes lay emotionless expect for just one plea.
"I can't Siddanth. I am sorry" Ruchi's feet gave away at the sight of Siddanth's pain of being so close yet so far.
The pain of being stuck in the pendulum in between.
"You will have to Ruchi! It's either now or later and you know how painful it is later on. This is not murder Ruchi, it's just urm assistance"
"You are a doctor right? How can you ever advice anyone the notion of death over life?" Ruchi's eyes blazing with an unspoken fire.
The fire to save an innocent life.
"Sometimes you just have to trust your heart Ruchi. I will give you a few minutes" The doctor said with his tone losing its distinct aura of professionalism.
"Why are you making me do this? Do you hate me this much? I promise not to call you four eyes again, just don't make me do this."
Gaining no response from Siddanth's body, Ruchi continued, "Don't you want to live Siddanth? For me? For your family and friends? For your career? Don't you want to live for the sake of living?"
"It's time Ruchi" The doctor had come back, this time with Siddanth's family and their friends in tow.
She leaned in, her hand shaking uncontrollably as she turned off the life support and pulled off the oxygen mask from his tiny nose.
And for the first time since Ruchi had walked in to his room, Siddanth held emotion in his eyes. His eyes held inexplicable emotions that Ruchi could never comprehend.
Some things are just better left buried, as Siddanth's eyes filled up with moisture and his lips curved into a satisfied smile.
"I love you four eyes" Ruchi whispered into Siddanth's ear.
Leaning in for their last kiss, Ruchi closed her eyes and tried to pour all her love for Siddanth, yet he stayed motionless under the pressure of her lips.
Ruchi started to flick the pages of her diary, as if she was looking for an answer. An answer to her question, but even she was unaware of what the question actually was.
Staring at a rather thick page, Ruchi just stared on to the blank page, her mind reflecting the paper brilliantly.
"I love codes, partially the reason I want to become a lawyer. I want to crack the unknown" Siddanth eyes sparkled with child-like enthusiasm, giving away his zeal.
"If you like cracking codes, then you must like setting codes as well?"
"You bet!"
Ruchi's eyes widened in shock, as she started to pull the two pages of paper apart as gently as she could, not wanting to tear the carefully glued edges of the paper. For that moment in time, Ruchi had forgotten it to be a piece of paper and instead held the paper so gently as if it was someone's beating heart.
What was the point of living a half life that was about to end anyways Ruchi? I couldn't put you or my family through the pain of watching me in pain. I love you Miss Egotistical. Not the ideal way to say it, but there you go. I love and trust you with my life Ruchi and that too quite literally.
I don't really know what else to say, you know how bad I am at writing birthday wishes. Well this isn't a birthday wish, but the same deal really. Take care of yourself and eat your Iron tablets on time, otherwise I will haunt you in your sleep. Imagine a four eyed ghost? Now that is a sight to behold. Can I be Gerald Butler and say "PS: I love you".
PS: I am sexier, just saying.
As she read his writing for the nth time, Ruchi couldn't help but chuckle at Siddanth's idiotic nature. But at the same time, Ruchi couldn't stop her tears from flowing either.
For the first time in months, Ruchi no longer felt sadness. No longer did she feel the need to curse herself, nor cry herself to sleep. She no longer felt the need to feel burdened under his memories. No. In that moment of time, she had learned to live with his memories instead.
Ruchi fished out a pen and wrote on the same page, "You gave me a forever within the numbered days"

Embracing the Change
The date was September 21st, this date held a lot of importance to anyone who was going back to school. It was the day when all the children would feel nervous, excited or just happy to be at school again and start the term afresh with friends. On this day at 7 O'clock in the morning, Sunaina stood with a hot cup of coffee, preparing herself for the first day of school. She still had some time left before the mayhem would begin, so took this as the perfect opportunity for herself to take her coffee and sit outside on her porch. She couldn't believe her eyes. She thought her brain was playing some kind of trick as she looked at the view of her neighborhood. She thought it looked like some beautiful oil painting, the kind she could stare at all day without being bored. There was a cool breeze that found its way onto Sunaina's skin and she immediately pulled her hands near her body and at that moment she knew that it was no painting but in fact this was reality. It finally was autumn! She considered autumn as the favorite time of the year and she loved the view from her porch. She looked at the ground and found dry yellow-orange leaves everywhere. She stepped on some leaves and the sound of the leaves crunching was like melody to her ears. Everything looked and felt stunning to her and for her autumn symbolized new beginnings. It's the time when the new school term begins and there are so many festivities like Halloween and Thanksgiving Day. For her it was the perfect season. She took a sip of her coffee and wished that the time could just stop for a while, she was excited for the new school term but she was also quite nervous because of the new challenges.
Her train of thoughts was interrupted by a distant sound of laughter becoming louder and louder. She blinked her eyes to focus on her surroundings again and saw three girls walking by in their school uniform with perfectly tied hair and their bags slung carelessly on their shoulders. As they passed by her house, she couldn't help but overhear them. They were expressing happiness on going back to school. Sunaina felt a pang of jealousy deep down as she watched those girls walking to school with so much enthusiasm and this primed her mind for her back to school memories. She could still remember every minute detail of her school life and how she used to panic before going to the new term every single time. A big smile spread on her face as she was thinking about all this after a long time. She remembered everything as if she had just graduated from high school only yesterday. Sunaina recalled how her mother on the first day of school would make her favorite blueberry pancakes with chocolate milk as her mother always believed that after the long holidays only chocolate milk could give her energy to go through the first day without feeling tired. For her, the best part about going back to school was that she could start afresh and just like the autumn for her symbolized new beginnings; for her first day at school meant new experiences, new teachers, some new friends along with the old ones and a brand new attitude to go with the new books. She laughed at the memories of how she used to be so excited to go back to school that she would take her mother along to the mall to get all the supplies needed. One of her favorite back to schoolmemory was of the week before the school started and how she always used to clean her cupboard, arrange her books, and get her uniform dry cleaned. She also recollected the feeling of nervousness as she walked the hallway of her school after several months and that feeling got replaced with excitement on meeting her friends and chatting about one's summer activities.
One back to school memory that she always treasured was the last time she knew she was going back to school that is when she stepped in 12th grade. She knew this was the last year and she remembered everything about that day including her feeling nostalgic. She used to complain a lot about her studies but she knew from her older sister's experience that school life is that time in a person's life that never comes back. She had seen that her sister hardly kept in touch with her school friends and that she would always talk about her teachers and her sports group whenever she got the opportunity. Sunaina had decided that in the last year, she would enjoy each day and imprint those memories into her mind. She particularly remembered on the first day itself she had signed to volunteer for the drama club, she showed interest for the environmental activities, and also forced her friends to take part because she believed that no matter what she did, if she had her friends, there would be double the fun. Sunaina grinned broadly because what she had wanted to achieve then was very much successful because till today she remembered all those events clearly and just last month she was browsing through the photo album where she collected maximum of school pictures. Every time she looked at those pictures she never stopped feeling sentimental and shed some tears of both happiness and sadness.
Her walk down the memory lane got interrupted by a scream in the house. She looked down at her coffee which had gone cold and sighed knowing very well that the day has officially begun for her. "Mom, get back inside we are getting late," Sunaina's 8 year old daughter, Sama, screamed. Sunaina rushed to her room to calm her daughter who was panicking due to her first day. She entered Sama's room and smiled at how lovely her daughter was looking in the school uniform.
"Sama, you are looking lovely and I don't want you to worry, you have 30 more minutes before the bus comes."
"But Mom I cannot find my shoes and Dhruv is not ready yet".
"Your shoes are outside, near the door and I am going to help your brother now".
Sunaina was smiling ear to ear now; she missed this early morning of rushing around the house to get her kids ready for school. Holidays are great but for some reason she also feels very elated on seeing her kids going back to school and how she can run around with them every morning and meet the tight schedule so that they don't miss their bus.
"Mom, I need your help. Come here fast, I cannot find my socks", Dhruv, her 10 year old son screamed from his room.
Sunaina rushed there and saw what a big mess Dhruv had made and said, "Dhruv, your room is so messy. How will you find your socks? You have to clean your room after you come back from school".
"I will do that mom but I cannot find my socks. My teacher is so strict. I have to wear those socks only that is provided along with the uniform"
Sunaina chuckled, remembering the times she used to hunt for her socks too when she was small and how scared she used to be from her teachers, how she misses those days when wearing the correct shoes and socks were the only big responsibilities she used to face.
Breaking away from her thoughts Sunaina guided Dhruv to the laundry room where he kept his socks the night before so that it could get dry.
She rushed to the kitchen to pack their lunchboxes, and wondered about how times have changed yet how similar they are. She is surprised at times that her kids are not very nervous to go back to school as they already know which teachers they are going to get and they met most of their friends during the summer camps. She reminisced about how for her going back to school everything was new she didn't know who her teachers would be and that she hardly used to talk to her friends during the summer.
But one thing hasn't changed at all and her kids remind her of her childhood, of how she also used to be very excited to be at school and how she was flooded with homework and studies. As her kids came down all ready she felt proud looking at them and felt nostalgic about how big they have become. Sama and Dhruv expressed happiness on eating blueberry pancakes at which Sunaina told them that their grandmother started this ritual every first day of the school "Your grandmother used to feed me these pancakes and I ate them happily as if they were my good-luck charms and so I am continuing this ritual with you two also."
Just in time the bus honked and the kids rushed outside as Sunaina waved them goodbye. She couldn't help but feel jealous again only because of the reason that she wanted to be in that bus and be a young child again, she wanted to be a teenager and walk to school with her friends not worrying about the world. But all Sunaina Malik could do was stand on her porch and watch the big yellow bus hurriedly move from one street to the next. She knew she had no time to think about all this because her day also begins from here just like the kids had to go back to school she also has to go back to work. She rushed inside and quickly got ready as she knew her colleague Rachel would be on time to pick her up. One good thing of being a professor in a university was that it also meant a three month long holiday just like the kids.
And right on time she heard a car honk and she walked outside locking behind an empty house that would according to her now rest in peace till the afternoon after the busy morning. She preferred to ride in silence but Rachel was chatting non-stop about the next term's agenda and how they would have to set the assignments for the students. Sunaina smiled at Rachel and told her to relax as it was the first day and this day is meant to be enjoyed both for the professors and the students.
After a short journey they reached their destination and every time Sunaina saw the university she never failed to admire its architecture and it seemed to her that today the building was looking more welcoming than ever. With the clear blue sky as the background and the red-yellow trees around the campus the university was looking very magnificent. She walked towards the entrance and noticed many students walking past her, some excited and some nervous. She smiled and realized that just like her small kids were experiencing their first day back to school, these young adults were also experiencing their first day. As she walked up the stairs to teach her first class she felt excited, she always liked the first day of university. It meant a new beginning for her and the students, of how they would introduce themselves and how she would describe to them that university life is almost similar to school so that they could feel comfortable. She loved teaching psychology especially to the new students because whenever she talked of something new or described something that is very natural to human behavior that each and every individual experiences she loved looking at her student's faces that reflected nothing but eagerness and a certain desire to learn more. That's why she loves taking the first day lecture for the new students because it somehow reminds her of herself in school and college and of how she used to be so excited to gain new knowledge and just learn more and more from her teachers.
After she was done for the day at the university, she went back home with Rachel to be greeted by Sama and Dhruv. As soon as they saw her step inside the house they immediately started telling their first day stories. Sunaina loved this part. She loved hearing the good and bad stories about the first day from her kids.
"Mom, there is new kid in my class he seems to be very mean", Dhruv started.
"Mom, I tried out for the juniors badminton team I think I might get in", Sama said while interrupting Dhruv.
"Kids I want to hear your stories but first tell me if you enjoyed your first day back to school and did the pancakes work their charm"
"Yes"! They both screamed at the same time and hugged Sunaina.
"Good now both of you have to change and I am going to prepare my very special autumn drink".
The kids ran upstairs leaving a mess behind with their shoes thrown near the door and their bags thrown on the sofa. Sunaina sighed but she didn't complain because she loved all this and was missing this for a very long time. With these thoughts going around her mind she set out for the kitchen to prepare her favorite autumn punch, one of the reasons why she loves autumn so much has got to do with this punch. She loves the tangy flavor that the apple-cranberry juice brings to the drink along with ginger ale. She does wonder though who named it the autumn punch maybe it had something to do with the colour - the punch takes a red-orange colour that compliments the autumn leaves.
Just as she put the jar of the drink in the fridge for it to chill, she heard the doorbell ring. She looked at the clock and she knew who it was. Dhruv opened the door and welcomed his aunt and her best friend Tara along with her two sons Tanuj and Meher. As soon as Tara came inside she could smell the aroma from her homemade Butternut Squash and Feta muffins which were her specialty. The kids went out to play and both Sunaina and Tara set the table with the punch and the muffins outside on the porch.
"I knew you would make the punch that's why I brought these muffins"
"Yep and the same way I knew that you would be here just like every year celebrating the first day of school"
Both of them laughed at this and recalled how Tara had started this ritual of spending the first back to school day together so they could talk about old times and hear their kids' stories together.
"Just today morning I was thinking that how I wish I could also go to school again"
"Sunaina, I am just so happy to be here I cannot think of being a teenager again" Tara joked.
They both sipped the punch and ate the muffins where the feta cheese would melt in their mouths with every bite and look at their children playing and recollecting their school memories of how they used to do everything together whether it was sports or studies. Sunaina considered herself very lucky that even after all these years she still was in touch with her friend and they both could enjoy new experiences.
"You know Sunaina we cannot go back to old times again that's now how life works"
"I agree with you but I cannot help feel this way sometimes"
"I understand but we those lucky ones that are experiencing those back to school events again with our kids"
Sunaina knew her friend was right and she knew it that she would not have it any other way, she was happy being a mother, a wife, a friend, and a professor. The cool breeze started doing its round again and with the breeze hitting her face she felt more rejuvenated and thought to herself that this was yet another new beginning and just like the autumn symbolized the start of the end this first day of school was the start and the end would also be near. Sunaina Malik wanted to turn the clock around and wanted to experience her back to school times once again but all she could do is treasure the memories and make new ones with her kids and experience back to school again as a mother instead of a student.

What my heart desires
She was drowning; the waves of sadness and remorse that engulfed her was truly overwhelming to her. It crushed her spirit, and what made it even worse was the helplessness. There was nothing that she could do to make the pain go away, the pain she herself had brought into their lives - or rather, into his and her lives...
****
The doorbell ring was deafening...
"Am coming...no need to press down the doorbell."
Isha skipped down the stairs and pulled open the door..."Aaa..."
So startled was she at the sight in front her that she stumbled backwards with a scream...and it took her a moment to find her bearings...
Aryan found her reaction so hilarious that he started laughing at her, clutching his stomach. Isha was now embarrassed and angry. She started pulling his hair and punching him.
"Awww...Isha...stop it...you are spoiling my costume...stop it."Isha wasn't ready to listen...
"Costume...?..You look like a freak. What is with all this meat part thinghy hanging out...ewww..."
By now she was panting from the struggle with Aryan and he had jumped to safety behind her couch.
"Oh! How I wish I had taken a video of your reaction..."
"Aryan...." Isha started moving towards him...
"Hey! Stop right there. Peace. No video. OK? Now calm down."
"Aryan! What the heck are you wearing?"
"What..?...this is my costume - for tomorrow night's University Halloween ball...I was just doing a dry run. From your reaction, I think this one's going to be a super hit."
"Costume...? And this? You look like a freak show. And why is this thing reaching only your knees. Did the butcher run out of meat - for full trousers?"
"Isha. Don't tell me you don't recognize this...it is THE meat dress...worn by Lady gaga...of course, how would you know? Your pop icon is John Lennon and your favorite band is Fleetwood Mac."
"Well...that's cos their music is timeless...and soulful. Not like the electronic junk that is sold as songs today."
Aryan just stuck his tongue out and headed into the kitchen. Isha usually had some yummy Caesar salad and that's what his target was.
"Isha...where is the salad...?"
"I did not get time to cook today...I just finished prepping for my seminar...how about we go out and grab a bite...."
"OK. But I can't walk into Pizza'n'Pasta like this. We'll drive back to my place, I will change and then we'll go from there."
"Yeah right. Otherwise people there might use the meat from this horrible costume as topping."
"Haha, very funny...now quit wasting time and come..."
"Why hurry? It's only 7 pm...Goooddd..."
Isha sat looking out of the window as Aryan drove through the roads strewn with autumn leaves. She let her gaze take in all the Halloween decorations in the houses they passed by, the jack-o-lanterns glowing in the darkness of the fall night.
*****
Isha was brought out of her reminiscing by loud honking...she had almost stepped out of the sidewalk. Quickly regaining her composure, she sighed. Halloween this year was long gone; without Aryan and his creepy costumes, without his laughs and his silliness that had once irritated her to the core and cheered her up like no one else could. Gone were those days, gone was his presence in her life.
She found tears starting to form in her eyes, they couldn't be stopped and sobs were starting to rise up from deep within her throat. She sat down on one of the benches, idly gazing at the traffic. A young couple walked hand in hand on the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road. They reached the door step of the house right across from where she was sitting and stood there for a while. The girl was indicating towards the door, maybe it was time for her to go in. The guy nodded his head and moved backwards, but at the last minute the girl pulled him back and gave a quick peck on the cheek.
Clearly their first kiss, Isha discerned that from the way the girl stood there for a moment bowing her head in shyness. The girl climbed the few steps to the door in a hurry and disappeared inside. And the guy smiled and he too walked away, playfully dribbling away a soda can.
First kiss. Her lips curved into a ghost of a smile. She too had been shy. In fact, she remembered every little detail of it. It was on Thanksgiving Day, last year.
*****
She had thought of spending it alone at her place, at the house share she had rented for her University studies. Her housemates had left to spend the holidays with their families. But Isha did not have anywhere to go. It was her first Thanksgiving. Her immediate family, or what was left of it, was back in India - her uncle and his family. She had lost her parents at a young age and if not for her academic prowess, she would have had to live an ordinary life; one that did not involve a scholarship to a reputed U.S university.
Aryan had invited Isha and some other friends for dinner at his house. He had everything that she ever wished for - a loving mother, a doting dad, and a pestering yet cute younger sister. And they did not just have a house, they had a home that was filled with warmth and love. She had thoroughly enjoyed that weekend. The dinner had been sumptuous and when she had tasted the turkey, it had felt like instant nirvana. Aryan's mom was an awesome cook.
As everyone settled in for the night, Isha and Aryan stood at the patio, sipping red wine.
"Thanks Aryan. Thank you so much. I...I really enjoyed this weekend."
"Anytime Isha...by the way, just a thank you...? Nothing more...?"
He let the question hang and moved a little closer to her, sliding his hands over the banister of the patio.
Isha looked at him wide-eyed. She knew what he was hinting at, in fact it was him who had put a small wrench in her enjoying the evening to the fullest; his glances, the way his eyes had swept over her again and again, taking in her pretty floral dress clad form - she had noticed all of those. Earlier at the dinner, when he requested her to pass the broccoli gravy, she was sure that the finger grazing that followed was not fully accidental.
She lowered her eyes and kept her eyes fixed on the small locket that hung around Aryan's neck...his parents' initials.
"Look at me."
Aryan tipped her face up with a finger below her chin...she glanced into his warm brown eyes, the light reflected from the red wine giving it an altogether deeper shade. Or was it just the light? Before she could zero in on the answer, Aryan had bridged the distance between them. And then fireworks exploded in her heart, like the ones she had seen on the Fourth of July...bright and colorful. She was taken in by it, the colors swirled around and engulfed her. It was like magic and Aryan was the one doing this to her. It seemed all that he wanted to emote was displayed in that one gesture - care, affection, tenderness... and love...??
Isha's train of thoughts came to a halt. Aryan sensed the slight pause and he stepped back.
As he turned to go back to his room, Isha grabbed his arm while her eyes were trained on the banister, not having the courage to meet his. Aryan looked at her standing with her head bowed...his Isha. Before she took another breath, he had taken her in a bear hug, spreading warmth that reached right through to her soul... covering her from the slight chill that had spread through the night air.
****
The warmth was gone. It was the start of winter and there was no one by her side as the darkness had started to deepen. Dusk had given way to night. Isha made her way to the nearby park, treading along the narrow cobblestone path sprinkled with a light snow shower. The maple leaves of autumn were beginning to get mushy after mixing with the snow.
Maple leaves - Aryan always adored them. Isha used to pull his leg saying he must've been born in Canada and not in the U.S and he used to laugh it off. For their first and last Christmas together as a couple, Isha had bought him a sweater with a maple leaf motif on the chest. He had loved it and she remembered the way his eyes had shone as he had tried it on.
But a few days later - after a friendship that had lasted over two years and a courtship only four months along, Aryan had got an internship opportunity in the West Coast. Isha had urged him to take it up, but Aryan was reluctant...he did not want to leave her alone. Their discussions slowly turned into a mild disagreement and then into a full blown argument. Isha had accused him of being short sighted. She had hated the thought that he would let go of the golden opportunity just to be with her and Aryan had accused her of trying to deliberately create distance between them. Finally, with neither giving up, they parted that night.
As Isha continued with the internship at a company nearby the university, Aryan had gone off to West Coast without even saying goodbye. She got to know from some friends that he did visit his home every couple of months. But that's all she knew...he had not called her and every minute they had spent apart was torturous. Aryan was her friend ever since she had started university. In a land where she knew not a soul, he was a true friend and a companion - who shared her dreams, aspirations, joys and sorrows. She felt she had not done full justice to their relationship. Maybe she shouldn't have forced him to go. But then, she could never be selfish.
She had wanted him to go, but in the end, come back to her...take her in his arms...and promise her that their time apart was over...that he was going to be by her side...always. She had wanted him to understand that that was what her heart desired. But it was not meant to be. She had realized that from every moment that had ticked away without his phone call or messages. And now she wanted nothing but to free her heart from the shackles of loss it was bound with...seemingly for eternity.
She tightened the cardigan around her, as if in a desperate attempt to protect herself from the harsh reality of the world. Walking through the park, she turned left to take the shortcut. It was not a well-lit area of the park and her friends had advised against it. But she always took it on her way back from the internship. And today was the last day of it. Aryan too would have finished his internship by now. Sighing, she stepped onto the soft grass. That's when her gaze fell on small lights, blinking like fireflies in the darkness. Her eyebrows furrowed as she had never earlier seen fireflies in the park.
As she walked closer, she realized what those lights really were...candles...tea lights, her favorites.
And it seemed that they spelled out something. She moved in closer to discern what it was.
She was startled by a familiar voice and a strumming of a guitar...
"I don't wanna know the reasons why
Love keeps right on walking down that line
I don't wanna stand between you and love
Honey, I just want you to feel fine
Finally baby
The truth has come down now
Take a listen to your spirit
It's crying out loud
Try to believe
Oh you say you love me but you don't know
You got me rocking and a-reeling
Oh, oh, yeah, ah, ah, ah
I don't wanna know the reasons why
Love keeps right on walking down that line
I don't wanna stand between you and love
Honey, I just want you to feel fine"
"So...do you like it...? Oh wait...You haven't read it fully yet, have you..?."
Her gaze moved from his face to the candles...numerous ones lit up to convey something. She finally read what they formed...
Sorry
Aryan had done it. For her...
Her heart was now ruling over her body and the rainbow of emotions - hope, anguish, relief, euphoria, all evoked by his deep yet playful voice and the sweet gesture, manifested in the form of tears. They wet her cheeks and ran down her face...
"Aryan..." She whispered...and Aryan took the first step in eliminating the distance that had come to be between them - both physical and emotional. He took firm long strides towards her and took her in his arms, just like old times.
This is where he belonged...and this is where she belonged too. He was an idiot not to realize how unselfish she had been. She must've suffered too. How cruel of him to not have contacted her even once. It had taken him a while to realize his mistake, and even longer to come up with a way to apologize. The die-hard old school romantic that she was, he knew it would take a simple yet genuinely heartfelt gesture for her to realize how sorry he truly was.
Isha was sobbing as Aryan patted her back, soothing her, assuring her that he will be by her side always...and Isha finally felt content. She clung to him, hugging him back tight.
"It's OK Isha. Everything will be alright. I am back and I promise that we will always be together. I missed you so much..I will never ever do this leave you alone...I love you Isha..."
"I...I love you too...Aryan.."
As Aryan sensed her tears subsiding, he decided to get out of the freezing park...
"Hush...no more tears...Now come on, let's just get out of this place and grab dinner."
"Aryan...it's not even 8..."
"Yeah. But I had skipped lunch today...cos of all the nervousness and the excitement."
"You...and nervous? I don't believe it..."
"What...I had to learn this song lyrics...damn Fleetwood Mac...your favorite artist should've been Justin Bieber...I could just say Baby Baby...like 10 times...and song done."
Isha giggled..."Thanks Aryan...I know you don't really like my kinda music, but this song is one of my favorites. And now I guess it will be my most favorite...cos, you sang it to me."
Aryan just stood there with a smirk, happy and a little proud too that he was able to bring a smile on his beloved's face.
"OK. Let's go. But before that, need to blow out these tea lights and take them with us. I don't think the authorities would want the whole park burnt down by morning. Come..."
Isha carried some tea lights and Aryan carried the rest along with the guitar case slung over his shoulder.
"By the way, mom has asked me to bring you along for Thanksgiving..."
Isha looked at Aryan questioningly.
"I think she knows", Aryan confirmed.
"So...what to do you think? Should I come?" Isha's eyes locked with his, expectantly.
"Oh well...up to you...", Aryan said cheekily and started sprinting away...
"You...stop right there...." Isha chased him and caught up with him at her doorstep. Aryan put down the things in his hands and held her by the shoulders. Gazing into her eyes, he said...
"I want you to come...because I want to make it as memorable as last year...its my favorite Thanksgiving tradition..."
He gave her a wink and a smile and then swooped down to take her lips, taking her away into a world where it was just him and her...together...forever...
