Her kids My older daughter Priyanka is an engineer. She is in the US doing her higher studies. My younger daughter Vanshikha is also an engineer and will soon join her sister abroad. Time management I started working only after my daughters had grown up. So there was no problem in raising them. Reel v/s real life When my daughter went abroad, the emotions I experienced were exactly the ones that I felt while shooting a bidai scene in a show. At times there are many similarities in enacting a mother's role on TV. But there are differ- ences.. like melodrama and the extreme feelings of expressing love or rejection towards the child. Message to her kids Now, my only aim in life is to see you'll happy. I'm very proud of both of you. Her kids My daughter Khushali has completed her studies. She is working in a play with me. I intend training her to be an actress on stage, later she can move to other mediums. Time management I was always home when she returned from school. I've never missed a single parent-teacher meeting. If my husband Drashan or I had to be away from Mumbai on work, we ensured that one of us remained with her. Reel v/s real life Screen mothers lack a sense of humour. Today's mothers wear western outfits and are working women. On TV, we don't show real mothers. Message to her kids Be extremely positive in life. You have to work very hard to lead the life you want. Nothing is easy. Everything has a price tag, you have to accept that. Her kids My older son Siddharth is in Los Angeles. He'smak- ing visual effects for Hollywood films and television. My younger son is a lawyer. Time management I was working when my sons were young. We were living in a joint family, so I never had problems in looking after them. There was always someone at home with them. I never left them with the maid. Reel v/s real life Screen mothers may not always react to a situation the way a normal mother would. If my sons made a mistake, I'd probably shout at them. In serials, it's contrived and extremely dramatic. Message to her kids For my real and on-screen children – I love you all very much. All my aashirwaads are with you. Her kids My son Sooraj is studying in the 11th standard. My daughter Sana has completed her 12th stan- dard and is now studying for another course. Time management I gave up work completely when my kids were young. I enjoyed sitting at home and looking after them. That phase of my life was a great experience. I resumed working five years ago. Reel v/s real life There are many similarities in real and reel life. The concern a mother has for her children and the relationship they share is often depicted the way it is in real life. Message to her kids Be sincere, punctual and disciplined in life. As told to Yashica

Mihika Verma - Interview

Mihika Verma, who is playing Smriti Irani's younger sister in 'Viruddh', has now managed to grab a role in Vinita Nanda and Raman Kumar's new serial. Although she is now doing the pilot project, she is keeping her fingers crossed. Vinita and Raman are the names behind televisions great serials like 'Tara', their last being 'Miillee'. The yet to be named serial is currently shooting its pilot and brings back this hit duo after more than two years.

We recently spoke to Mihika about her achievement so early in the industry. Being humble, she talks about her experience in the industry so far. Here is the excerpt.

Q: How does it feel to have grabbed a major role in Vinita and Raman's new serial?
A: See I am shooting for the pilot, but I do not know what is going to happen next.

Q: So what is your role like?
A: Actually, I'm instructed not to talk anything about the serial yet and I have already landed myself into much trouble by doing so.

Q: In that case tell us about your experience in Viruddh.
A: It has been a great experience so far. I have learnt so much from the serial! Every time I think I have learnt something, the very next day I realize that there is a lot that I still have to learn.

Q: You are working with senior actors like Vikram Gokhle, Smriti Irani, Sushant Singh, Achint Kaur, Ashwini Kalsekar. How has been your experience with them?
A: I'm lucky that I have got the opportunity to work with such actors, but when such actors are around you, you need to work harder. They know their
job, but I being a non-actor, I really need to work hard to look good in front of them. Moreover, they pamper me a lot and always make sure I'm comfortable.

Q: How much have you learnt from them?
A: A lot. They are so good to me all the time. I have learnt a lot from them. They help a lot with things like voice modulation, eye and face expressions. I get practical knowledge from them. They show me things on the sets and I emote them there itself. So now I know how well or bad I'm doing.

Q: So who are you close to?
A: Actually, I'm close to the production team a lot, the assistant directors and others. I am also close to Karan, who plays my brother. We are like Tom and Jerry. Also I share good vibes with Chetan who is like my elder brother. I'm also fond of Achint, my on screen nani and mother.

Q: Has there been any incident that has got imprinted in your mind?
A: I do not think there are any such incidents, but there are several moments that I cherish. As for example, I had to emote anger, which I cannot do easily, so the director had to keep a cool with me. But at the end of the day, I was appreciated for my efforts, which I really cherish. There are many incidents like this.

Q: Do you identify with your character?
A: Yes, I'm very much like Shreya. I have always been pampered by my father and was also this little rebellious. But I was a little controlled and calmer.

Q: You were a model, what drew you towards acting?
A: I really enjoyed
modeling and I still do. Whenever I walk the ramp, I feel like a queen. But somehow, it was not giving me the complete inner satisfaction that I was looking for. I felt I needed to do something else too. Thus I tried myself in acting and got that satisfaction. But here too I was not getting the kind of roles I identified with. But then Viruddh happened and I took it up.

Q: So are you continuing with you modeling assignments?
A: Oh yes, I'm doing modeling too. Viruddh takes away just 15 days a month and so I do a lot of ramp walks or
hosting shows and even advertisements.

Q: Whom do you like, Smriti as an actor or Smriti as a producer?
A: I would choose Smriti as a person. She is such a good person. She always takes care of me. As an actor she is fabulous and self less. She always tries to but my character forward. As a producer too, she is always keeping us happy.

Q: 'Viruddh' is not getting TRPs as it was expected to. What do you have to say for that?
A: See, I personally do not know much about or believe in TRPs. All that I know is that there are people who come up to me and tell me that we like your show and left some other show to watch Viruddh. We know we all are doing or best and have our own loyal audience. We are sure we are going to do well.

'I'm not worried about Virrudh's low TRPs'

Newcomer Mihika Varma would rather talk about how petrified she was of Vikram Gokhale and Smriti Iraani.

DEEPALI DHINGRA

When Mihika Varma received a call to audition for the role of Smriti Iraani's younger sister in Viruddh, she thought it will be another one of those things where you audition and receive no call back. "I didn't have any formal training in acting, so I was quite surprised when they called me back for another audition and selected me for the role," she says with a smile.

Recalling the first day of the shoot, Mihika says that she was terrified of the idea of shooting with actors like Smriti and Vikram Gokhale. "I was really scared. I won't say that they were not strict with me because I did need to work hard. But they were really patient with me as well," she adds. But the one question that everybody asks Mihika is, how does she find working with Smriti Iraani? "Smriti m'am is superbly patient with me. I'm like her baby," she says.
But recently, there have been rumours that despite the show's good content, Viruddh is not doing well. Considering it's her first project on television, isn't she apprehensive of the show going off air? "See, I would be very apprehensive of that happening if people around me in the show show signs of apprehension. I'm not worried about the show's low TRPs because we're confident of our product," she says firmly. On a philosophical note, Mihika adds that people take time to accept change. "Viruddh is intelligent viewing and it will change the face of television. It's just that it will take some time," she says.

At the moment, the actress is content doing this one show and looking forward to signing some new projects. What about Bollywood? "I am interested in Hindi films but I won't run around producers for a role. I'll wait for them to come to me. I'm in no hurry..." she concludes. Well, 'confidence' can sure be Mihika Varma's middle name!

'I've been doing the same thing for three years'

Small-screen baddie Chetan Hansraj wants to do something different now.
NICOLE DASTUR

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's bad boy Sasha is playing a positive role in his upcoming film Bhram, but he candidly admits that he prefers being the bad guy. Even in Bollywood, where he's trying to make a name for himself ? "Yes, I'd love to play a negative role in a film too. Something like Saif Ali Khan's character in Omkara," he smiles.

Did acting with already established actors Dino Morea and Milind Deora intimidate him? "Not at all. All our roles were clearly etched out, so it was quite cool," says Chetan.

Bollywood's calling, but what about television? Is Chetan willing to quit the small screen for 70mm? "If films work out for me, yes, I'm ready to make the jump. But till then, I can't quit TV. It's difficult to break into Bollywood. But I need to be mentally stimulated to work on TV. I've been doing the same thing for three years now! I want to do different roles, not play run-of-the-mill characters," he says firmly.

Acting apart, there's also something else that gets Chetan's adrenaline pumping. And that's rally racing. Yes, the self-confessed Formula One fan — "I've been following F1 religiously since 10 years now" — also takes part in car rallies. "They are navigational rallies, so speed is not the criteria," he tells us, adding that adventure sports give him a thrill like no other. Guess a movie based on racing would be the ideal match for Chetan!

Games people play

It may be called the small-screen but the TV industry is today a colossal medium, not only promising swelling returns and a deluxe lifestyle but also cross-continent popularity to its actors. No wonder TV actors—be it the ruthless working rota, erratic sleep, nervous breakdowns or endless commuting—are game to sweat it out while the sun smiles. However, most have weaved stress-busting techniques into their routine to help them resist the oppressive work ethic.

Popular 'vamp' Achint Kaur shares, " work out, I've started taking dumbbells to the sets. I also suffer from low blood pressure. So I carry my juices and fruits and regulate my salt intake. In between shots, I read, listen to music and surf the net. Ultimately, it's about mind over matter."

She may be spreading negativity in Zee's 'Kasamh Se', but Roshni Chopra thinks positive. "When 'Kasamh Se' was new, it was so demanding! Today, I make it a point to workout. I stick to a protein diet. I meditate in between the shots, and carry an I-pod and books all the time."

Her co-star in the same show, Ram Kapoor reveals that he has joined a gym because his 'body suffered' due to lack of exercise. "We work for minimum 12 hours. But sometimes it goes up to 18 hours and more," adding, "I don't get enough time for my daughter Siya. But I'm working this hard for her. During 12 hours on the sets, I finish watching a two-hour movie on the DVD. It relaxes me."

Parizad Kolah Marshall, host of 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge' has to stand on her feet all day. "So in between, I shut my eyes for ten minutes and relax. I've to keep encouraging the contestants, which in turn ensures my energy levels are up. However, the comic participants do not allow me to get bored. They are my stress-busters," she claims.

Baddie Akashdeep Saigal says that when people 'jump' out of their cars and shout 'Ansh Gujral!' on spotting him, the grind seems worthwhile. "Playing negative roles sap you. So I sip electral water and meditate." He sums up the spirit that drives the TV work force saying, "Nobody has seen tomorrow, so why crib?"

"It is time for another change in television": Anoop Soni

Anoop Soni has been in this industry for a decade now, but he has still not managed to leave a mark. He has begun his career with films, but then when it did not work for him, he too moved on to television. Here too, he has not be too successful, but has managed to get some good characters.

Currently seen in a Balaji show, Anoop is all set to make a special appearance in Smriti Z. Irani's 'Virrudh'. Anoop says he is not too happy with what he has done till now and aspires for more meaningful roles in good films. Here is the excerpt of his interview.

Tell us something about your character in 'Virrudh'.
I will be playing a special investigation officer called Vikram Agarkar. He is basically an upright, honest and no-nonsense kind of an inspector who will investigate into the attack on Dhirendra Raisinghania.

Is it a cameo?
As far as I know, it is a special appearance, which is not going to last for more than two weeks.

You played a surprising negative role in 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye'. Are there any such chances again? I don't know. This aspect was thought of, but nothing has been decided yet. Maybe if the character gets concrete and substantial, I might just carry on with it.

What made you accept this role?
I am already doing 'Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii'. I find it taxing doing two dailies at a time. Doing 'Virrudh' will also give me the time to concentrate on some other things. Moreover, it is a good show.

So had you being following it?
No, not religiously, but I keep a touch.

You have been seen doing serious kinds of roles, any particular reason for it?
No, I do not think it is so. I have done different kinds of roles in 'I Love You', 'Saaya' and 'Remix'. So, I think that from my side I have a variety, but I guess you ask the producers why I'm not being offered different kinds of roles. You know it happens. As an actor some kind of roles suit you better than the others.

Are you choosy with your roles?
Yes, I'm choosy, but you know serial no have longer life now a days. Thus, I like to do good strong roles.

How has been your experience in the industry so far?
It has been fabulous so far. I have enjoyed a lot.

Do you find any changes in the industry in the past 10 years of being here?
Yes, there have been a lot of changes. In the film industry, only the working style has changed, while television has gone from weekly half-an-hour shows to daily episodes. The working time has increased by five times. But I guess, it is time for another change in television.

What kind of changes?
I think television should become more realistic. Reality shows are good watching and as far as I know television, reality shows will last for a longer time.

Are you happy with the kind of roles that are being offered to you?
No, I am not absolutely happy. You know television is limited and in this limited field whatever I have got is average. But for films I feel that I need some bigger roles.

What kind of roles do you want in films?
I would love to do films like 'The Namesake', 'Metro' and 'Rang De Basanti'. When I see such films, I feel that as an actor I have a lot to learn and a lot to grow. There are so many things that I still have not done.

What is happening in the film front?
I have just finished a film called 'Karkash'. Here too, I'm there in a serious… not exactly serious role, but I play a crude and rude character. Suchitra Pillai is opposite me. The film has been produced and directed by actor Kamal Sadanah. The film is my first lead role in Bollywood and I'm looking forward to it. It is complete now and ready for release, but I still do not know the exact date for its release.

Anoop Soni enters Virrudh

Anoop Soni, who made his entry into the entertainment industry through films, is now struggling to make a mark in the television industry. This actor has been liked in serious roles, especially as that of a police inspector.

Anoop will now be seen as an inspector once again in a television show 'Virrudh', but he has not given up on films. Another actor Kamal Sadnah, has directed and produced a film 'Karkash' and has cast Anoop in the lead.

"I'm excited as this would me my first lead role in films. Suchitra Pillai is cast opposite me," confirms Anoop. Here too he will be playing a 'crude and a rude guy'. 'Karkash' is a 90-minute film based on rural settings. The movie deals with the serious issue of women's empowerment and where they actually stand in a male-dominated society. It's about a young couple that has been married for six months and the problems they face. "Rather than being a commercial cinema, it's more of a realistic one," says the director and producer of this movie, Kamal.

Though this movie is ready now, nothing has been decided about the release date. We do not know if the movie would be accepted by the audience or not, but we hope it does some good for Anoop

Q You have been anchoring shows on television besides doing films. Were you keen on doing serials?

No, I wasn't keen on doing serials simply because I can't connect with any of them though I have nothing against serials. Also time has been a major issue with me. I have been getting offers but I can't work for 20 to 25 days in a month for a show.

Q So what made you change your mind? Did the Virrudh magic work on you? Or are you doing the show because you play an important role opposite Smriti Irani?

Virrudh is definitely a different and classy show. It has a real good star cast of film and television actors. And the show is story-centric. Though it is being made in a television format, it has been treated like a film. When I was offered an important role which requires me to work for only eight days in a month, I couldn't say no to it. I am really excited about working in a multi-character soap.

Q What's your role like?

I am playing Aditya Bhardwaj, an industrialist who is also into social work. Aditya is a long-lost college friend of Vasudha (Smriti) and they meet at a Seva Ashram of which Aditya is a trustee. He starts taking an interest in her life and helps her get over her problems. He motivates her to face setbacks in life and is like a shoulder for her to cry on. But he is also a fun-loving and friendly guy who loves to flirt as well.

Q Will Aditya become Sudha's love interest thus forming a love triangle?

I really don't know. But yes, the character has romantic inclination towards Vasudha.

Q Zaher didn't do all that well. How was the experience of doing the film?

I loved shooting for the film and playing a bad guy. I did the film to enter the Bhatt camp.

Q Which are the films you are doing currently?

I am doing Shaadi Ke Side Effects for Manish Jha's Mumbai 10, which comprises 10 short films. Then I am doing Mukta Arts film called Cycle Kick, which is inspired by Bicycle Thief, where I am playing a young football coach.

Q You anchored the first of its kind sex education show called Dangerous with Kamal Siddhu on Zoom. Were you comfortable hosting the show?

No, I wasn't and neither was Kamal. The first one or two months,I was apprehensive because a show on sex education had never been done before. But we anchored it for nine months ,telling people to practice safe sex, try different positions and explore was quit fun. After Dangerous, I did another show for Zoom called Love Bytes, which dealt with relationship problems.

Q Will you be doing more television shows in future?

I want to explore the medium and will juggle my time between television and films.

99 per cent perspiration

Sameer Kocchar, introduced as Smriti Irani's love angle in Virrudh, sweated it out on the first day of shoot. And we're speaking literally.

Kunal M Shah

Sameer and Smriti Irani in a still from Virrudh

Popular television host Sameer Kocchar is shooting for Smriti Irani's Virrudh and will soon make an appearance in the serial. On the very first day of the shoot, Sameer who has never worked in a fictional show before, got a taste of the rigours of working in a daily soap, since the studio he was working in, had no air-conditioning.

Sameer took more than five hours to complete one scene as during the scene he kept sweating. The perspiration was visible on his face. Sameer says, "I can't tell you how horrible it was. This was the first time I was shooting for a television serial and I was excited that it is not a routine saas-bahu show.

"However, to my misfortune, on the very first day, the director Santram, gave me lengthy, high-voltage dialogues as it was a dramatic scene. The air-conditioners failed that day and I felt as if I was in a steam bath as I had a coat and jacket on. I play this rich, stylish industrialist called Aditya Bhardwaj and that's why I was dressed like this. I had such a lengthy dialogue that after every line, I would sweat and we had to cut the scene. My make up man would wipe sweat off my face after every line. It was one horrifying day and it happened to be my first day on the shoot. I took the entire half day to execute the scene but thankfully the director understood my problem."

Sameer will appear in the show as a childhood friend of Smriti. His character meets hers in her hour of crisis. There is supposed to be a romance angle between him and Smriti.

Virrudh will replace Kyunki: Achint Kaur

Achint Kaur (Vedika from Virrudh) has rated Virrudh as a better serial than Kyunki saying that Kyunki's storyline has stagnated. "I think after a few months Virrudh will replace Kyunki."

About Virrudh, Achint says, "It's nice to be the part of the new show as there is a different story and not the usual saas-bahu track. My role as Vedika in the serial will be positive later but I'm enjoying my role as of now."

Speaking more about her character in the serial, Achint says, "It's a different role and has certain elements which are very contemporary."

Interestingly, Achint replaced two vamp characters on television earlier - Mandira in Kyunki & Pallavi in Kahani Ghar… but it was her role as Mandira that became very famous.

Apart from Virrudh, she is also shooting for Karam Apna Apna on Star Plus.

BOX

Top 5 things you like about Virrudh:

• Unique track
• Great star cast - Vikram Gokhale, Sushant Singh, Smriti Irani
• Different set and location
• Good atmosphere to work production wise
• My character
