Best Actress 2004

The year has been interesting for the typical Bollywood heroine. She has experimented. A lot. Most of the women in our list of top actresses of 2004 have run through a great selection of different roles, and the response to our poll shows that you, our readers, applauded this variance. Here are the five best actresses of 2004, chosen by rediff.com readers worldwide. 5. Sushmita Sen Sush turned normally rational males into pools of gibbering mush, and most of the country's women into cattily envious shrews.

When Shah Rukh Khan's overwhelmed arms kept rising up to welcome the stunning Miss Chandni, every man in the audience could relate.

The woman is gorgeous! She was seen this year in the experimental Paisa Vasool, as a strong woman with guts; in Main Hoon Na as the irresistible Chandni, making saris uber-cool; and earned well-deserved acting plaudits in stylistic horror flick Vaastu Shastra.

4. Aishwarya Rai This year, our most-hyped actress went international. Her Cannes connection has become a thing of regularity, and 2004 saw her first English film, as well as a Madame Tussaud's waxwork. Not bad at all.

Ash had a year of halves: she looked incredible in Bride & Prejudice, but couldn't act; looked scarily depressing in Raincoat, and performed extremely well; her Khakee did fairly well at the box-office; and her Kyon! Ho Gaya Na..., with boyfriend Vivek Oberoi, sank without a trace.

3. Kareena Kapoor Kareena, as she coyly but unashamedly confessed to on Karan Johar's deliciously infamous Coffee With Karan chat show, is now Bollywood's highest paid actress! (Well, she didn't actually yell that out, but did admit her paycheck is greater than Rani Mukerji's, which essentially says it all!)

The glamorous Kapoor girl did rather well this year, with an eclectic selection of directors -- Mani Ratnam's Yuva; Govind Nihalani's Dev, where her singing a song was the highlight of a tiresome film; Ken Ghosh's Fida, with a bad-girl act; Priyadarshan's Hulchul; Abbas-Mastan's Aitraaz; and finally, Sudhir Mishra's Chameli, where she got critical applause for a powerful performance.

2. Preity Zinta Her dazzling smile is accompanied by irresistible dimples and a laugh to die for! Preity's had a bubbly year, doing a couple of rather fun-to-do films and topping everything off with a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime role in a Yash Chopra epic! In 2004, she starred opposite Hrithik Roshan in Lakshya; opposite Salman Khan in Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha; opposite now-politician Govinda in Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karen; and, finally, opposite box-office supremo Shah Rukh Khan in Veer-Zaara.

1. Rani Mukerji It's been a steady climb, and this year Rani has been diverse enough to star in two of the year's biggest box-office hits, and even get a tremendous critical reception in her one release that flopped! Picking her roles with extreme caution, Rani's roster included a brilliant performance in Mani Ratnam's Yuva; complete Bollywood masti in Kunal Kohli's smash hit Hum Tum; and all the best bits of dialogue in Yash Chopra's blockbuster Veer-Zaara. Quality, not quantity. Indeed, Rani. Well played.

hmm...that is a tough one and even though Kareena Kapoor is
a bleeep! My vote goes to her. If Shilpa Shetty was on the list, I
would have voted for her. She did a fantastic job in Phir
Milenge.

My vote goes to Preity and then Rani. You're right Neha---Urmila doesn't get enough credit for her work. She has turned out great performances in "Bhoot," "Pinjar," and "Ek Hasina Thi" and has been critically acclaimed too, but she never seems to make the popular categories for best actress 😕
