"success is built step by step"
The Narayan family. Udit Narayan with Wife Deepa and Son Aditya |
Today you are adulated, but 30 years of that, you were a young boy who rocked the dreams. Tell us your beginnings.
Udit: My father is a farmer and my mother singer. My father wanted that I become doctor or engineer in Nepal. I was perhaps six years old and I had already a dream for the future, to follow the artistic steps of my mother. I listened to the Indian songs with the radio, and I thought of the moment when it would be me whom one would listen to. It is by chance that I took down a purse in classical music with Indian Embassy Scholarship. I then studied in Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in Mumba, but meanwhile I was going to see the producers, begging them to listen to my voice. When Rajesh Roshan proposed to me to sing in his film Unees Bees in 1980 I immediately accepted. Success was not with go. I then was on the waves of Kathmandu Radio Station during eight years. When I interpreted the song Papa Kehte Hain of the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, success followed, I even had my first Filmfare Award for this song.
And since, how do you live this celebrity life?
Udit: I am very happy, proud to see that I have fans and that these long years of sacrifices bore their fruits! Even my first Filmfare Award, I hardly dare to believe that I had it! I thank God for having agreed this blessing...
Deepa: You know, before each concert,Udit is skeptic in front of the crowd which binds itself, it leaves me all the time: "You really believe that they came for me?"
You had to face many difficulties during your course. What did you learn from this experiment?
Udit: (silence) If you want to do something in the life, you must face the difficulties. There are no way outs. Me, I fight since I am five years old. I fight against the strong gales and today I continue.
Deepa: To fight formed part of the life, fortunately that God gave to Udit a "sweet voice"...
Udit: (smiling). In India, you will be able one day to see me travelling by the train or going by foot if I do not have the choice. I am very believing, it is thanks to God that I am there. All that I have today had a price. Success is built step by step!
What made you hold during this combat for the recognition?
Udit: My music, my family... The music it is like a remedy, that gives tonicity, that goes up the moral one. And it is important for everyone to have it in the life. Thanks to it I could sing for the greatest, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan.
Deepa: What also helped Udit, is that his family did everything to shoulder him. I understood very quickly that it was in a universe which could easily make you rock even if are at the top of glory! Today, it is our son ADITYA who springs on the traces of his father!
******************************************
Aditya, you play the piano magnificiently, will you be the next wonder of Bollywood?
Aditya: (laughter) Perhaps. Since I started to sing at three years, I never stopped again! I sang in Akele Hum Akele Tum, and I am also an actor, in Pardes and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai. I make voices of children. I have just entered to the university, I learn the Indian languages, a little French also...
Udit: I am proud of my son. He always supported me and he includes/understands well that the life that I carry out is hard.
Deepa: Aditya only fights for his career. I supervise him sometimes but he does what he wants. he is independent and has the courage of Udit.
Which values will you carry for the remainder of your career?
Udit: (reflexion). To like and respect the others. God sent to us on Earth. We will die one day but for the moment, we have the life. We must be interdependent and divide what we have of good with the others.
