Salman Khan unveils wax figure at Madame Tussauds

Surrounded by fans, Bollywood actor Salman Khan unveiled his wax figure at Madame Tussauds here Tuesday.

Salman beat nine other Indian mega stars - including Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan, Lata Mangeshkar and Abhishek Bachchan, to win a place at the world famous waxworks museum after a public poll conducted last summer.

Salman's statue stands in a special Bollywood section alongside those of three other Mumbai greats - Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan.

The museum hopes the installation of the new statue, reflecting Salman's popularity in the West, will attract many more South Asian and British Asian visitors.

The heartthrob actor was measured and photographed by expert sculptors in Mumbai last October to kick-start painstaking work on his wax double. He personally chose and donated clothes for the figure to wear.

Salman, who has starred in over 55 films since his 1988 debut film Biwi Ho To Aisi made it to the central London attraction after beating off competition from Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar, Kajol, Lata Mangeshkar, Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham.

More than 10,000 people voted in the poll to choose the "Next Bollywood Star" conducted last August.

Ben Lovett of Madame Tussauds said recently: "The Asian market is critical to our attraction and our association with Bollywood, particularly the launch of Shah Rukh Khan, has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Asians, from both the UK and abroad, visiting and enjoying Madame Tussauds. We hope to build upon this exciting relationship with the unveiling of Salman."

Your opinion pls on this... 😛

Salman beats Lata Mangeshkar to get waxed as a statue at Madame Tussauds 😕

Question is:

What should be the criteria of selecting celebrities to get a wax statue? Does it hold any honorary signifcance at all, if any? If yes, who else would you want to see cast in wax in the same museum?

😃 yeah ...cheers at salman statue 😃

I guess the criterion should be popularity. and since it is a statue, then physical beauty is significant too. 😃

quite an honour, definately 😃
i think madhuri's replica should follow. 😃

I guess its an honor to be immortalized in wax and be placed along with other achievers in the field...

But basing it just on popularity is not fair at all.. I think your achievements need to speak for you and leaving the decision on public voting would only lead to more popular faces finding a place there rather than the more deserving...

Since the museum honors personalities from all fields, physical attributes should not matter at all too...

Personally, I think many deserving Indians have not found a place there, and hence the place is just getting crowded by more popular film personalities!

I thought his statue would have been bare chested 😆 but the statue is wearing a black vest. Well Salman is good looking, and he surely deserves a place in there. He is next to Ash but Big B will surely keep an eye 😆 😆

Well I would be happy if people from different fields were there as well, cos it's just celebrities and they are voted based on their popularity. Salman surely is popular... but I think we need to look beyond Bollywood too 😛

i think Salman should have desi authorities put up his putla in India as well. that would be the right honorable patriotic thing to do. 😛 ever thought of all the foreign exchange that could be earned from star-crazy NRIs? 😉 😆

also, given that this is just a product for the "show-room", they have to go for the popular mass-merchandise stuff. the old fellas wearing dhotis and gandhi topis wouldn't sell. putla banana hai toh pehle body banao. 😆

I think even more than popularity, what played a major role here is visibility. Everyone in the list had been popular at one time or the other. But what made the difference is visibility of the brand. Madhuri and Kajol have not been very visible recently. Lataji rarely made any public appearance starting from 1990s. And the likes of John Abraham are too new to actually make an impact on the memory of the public, especially throughout the deifferent segments of the population. But Salman has been there for a long time for everyone to know him and still he is very much active in the film and glamour world and grabs headlines. So, if we compare all the products, Salman is the most visible and wins hands down. Afterall, all of us have a short memory and none of us will bother enough to go back in history, rack our brain and come up with some name who made the most significant contributions, especially for a trivial vote like this.

Ek aur example humare colonial slavish mindset ka.

I remember when Mr.Bachchan was going to be included in Madam Tussauds, I thought it was a great thing. He surely is star of the millenium and deserving. Aishwarya Rai with the fame she got in and outside India too seemed deserving but when SRK was included I had doubts and then thought he is rightly deserving too with a humble path similar to Mr.Bachchan's and not associated to any film family, made it to this level by sheer hardwork.

But this time when the popularity voting started and Salman was selected I finally thought...who cares😆! Go ahead and put a waxed Zayed Khan too. Anyways it has lost its meaning just like Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

hmmm...good marketing strategy. looks like they are now including stars based on popularity to rake in moolah from the indian community/tourists. lot more wld like to see salman than lata jee in that museum.
