Ten years on air and the popular detective series CID is still going strong on Sony retaining its position in the top five shows of the channel. Not surprisingly, director BP Singh is ecstatic and has planned some big initiatives around the show in its tenth year...
Apart from the reality shows like Antakshari and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, yours is the only show in its genre to finish a decade on air. Surely, it wasn't easy...
Oh, it's been a hard stuggle day and night. All credit goes to the writers who have consistently given me new stories to tell. Sridhar Raghavan was writing the show initially and after six years he opted out and graduated to scripting for films. Sriram Raghavan who's scripted and directed Ek Haseena Thi and Rajat who's written Taxi No 9211 have all contributed to CID before films happened to them. Now I have a young team of writers churning out new ideas, I even sit with them and brainstorm.
Is any of your story based on a real incident?
No, it's completely fiction. However, the treatment I give to the story makes it look real. Sony has given me the freedom to shoot it the way I want and most of the time I use real crowd and action. Even the forensic scenes are close to reality and that is the USP of the show. For viewers, it's suspension of disbelief.
Shivaji Satam as ACP Pradyuman has been solving cases unrelentlessly. How do you view his success?
Shivaji and I have been together for 22 years. Before CID, I had directed a Marathi detective series Ek Shunya Shunya and he was a cop in that. We share a relationship that goes beyond the actor/director. Though he's been playing the part brilliantly for ten years now, he has matured as an actor. Like old wine he's very good and at the same time he still retains a freshness. A director's actor, he likes to be told what is to be done and then interprets it in his own way. As a senior, he earns a lot of repect from his colleagues and he is the one who keeps the unit close like a family.
Even his aides Daya and Aditya have been with you since the inception of the show. Haven't they?
Daya has been with me right from day one. Aditya stepped into Ashutosh Gowarikar's shoes nine years ago and since then has been a part of the show. I remember requesting Aditya who had just done Satya to come into the show when Ashutosh wanted to leave for making Lagaan. The last episode of Ashutosh was so good that it got me the Best Serial award. Coming to Aditya, he had made it clear then, that he will do it only for six months. It's stretcted to nine years. These actors have given part of their lives to the show and I am really fortunate to have such a unit.
What are your plans for the show now that it's in its tenth year?
The celebrations will be on through different activities in the coming months. There will be a drastic change in the magnitude of the show besides the name which is now CID Most Wanted. We will be having more of outdoor locations (the episode aired on August 10 was shot in 13 locations). We have spotted two locations in Kerala and Delhi where we will be shooting soon. There will be huge action, of course, under permissible limits because it's a family show . Two new faces have been introduced, Megha Gupta as inspector Devyana, Shraadha Musale as a forensic doctor and a new-male cop(O wow thats exciting 😊 ) will also join the force. Most importantly, we are trying to organise an international conference on preventive forensic science for which we are collaborating with the Centre of Forensics. We are not experts on the subject but through our show we have made people aware of the importance and role of forensic evidence in solving a case. Now we want to take it further with a conference which is being scheduled on January 20, 2008 the day CID completes 10 years.
Looking back, which have been your memorable episodes so far?
There have been many but one of my best episodes has been the one shot in Jodhpur. Technically it was mind-blowing. It was about this guy who comes to Jodhpur railway station, gives rice to a passenger in the train and asks him to deliver it to ACP Pradyuman. He dies before the man can ask anything. Pradyuman is baffled by the bag and much to his amazement discovers a message written on the grains of rice asking him to meet somebody near the windmills. Jaisalmer has 100 windmills and it was terrific shooting amidst that. Also, the place has unique houses, all painted in blue and close to each other. I called for a chase sequence on the rooftop and canned it from the Miramgar fort. It was shot like a film. The other unforgettable episode is the one that I shot in 111 minutes in a single take and almost till the end one didn't know who the culprit was. It has entered the Guiness Book of World Records.
Luv Daisy!!
