How do we define or rate good music as? By the album sales/singers/composers/critics reviews/legend's remarks/sleek videos/star value of song/national awards/international acclaim or any other factor like ethnicity or record company.

Everyone has their own preference for choosing an album or song over others. So how we arrive at whats better than the other? Can there be a acceptable criteria? And where do we place folk songs?

So lets share our views. 😊

good music is music which is universally liked (in most cases) and this should translate into a large number of albums/records being sold...good music doesn't necessarily top the charts i feel though it should...

I agree as each one's idea and defination is diffrent from other. mostly the top songs on chart are short lived as they are liked bcos they are fast and trendy. They come and go and yes ppl do by cds on the basis of popularity as they become famous for time being. They may be sold in mass number at the moment. But does that mean it is a good music?

for me What is good music is that I like to hear again and again and never ever get bored of it It should be calming and melodius. Music of my choice may be very boring and slow to others.

Age plays big part in the decision. Older ppl will tend to go for more melodius and calming music. vs the younger generation will go for more trendy, noisy, modern remix kind of songs and albums.

So true top 10 is not necessarily a good music to some at the same time music that does nto make it to any chart can not be classified as bad music.

Folk music per se may be only popular for that area, but the songs made from folk music some times bcecome very popular as we have tons of songs made from folk music the exampe may be

daiya re daiya chadh gayo papai bichua

or who can forget the song morni baga ma bole adhi raat ma

or song from bhojpuri

nain lad jaihe to manva ma kasak hoi re gayi or dhundho dhundho re sajna from movie ganga jamuna

I think for different people it means differently. It may start from one thing but in the end it's combination of many things. For me it has to either start from good lyrics or may be music then lyrics have to be at least average. For me it does not matter who sings, who composes... as long as I can humm the lyrics in front of the family and it appeals to my ears or lyrics are very good & it's OK that's good music in my definition. Good music is what appeals to ears in the end...

One defines 'Good Music' according to his/her own perceptions.Given the fact that there are countless possibilities of perceptions, its highly difficult to organize and list out a specific set of criteria which endorse 'Good music'. However,we just can't let away with the above explanation and convince ourselves that no such criteria can be found.Atleast it does not happen in this pragmatic world. So,what is the answer...?
The technical solution is : Sampling.
Putting this in day-day language,we take a sample of population who are representative of the entire crowd, take a survey of them and list out the most-frequently cited criteria. These are reasonably acceptable across the entire gamut of music-lovers.
I shall list some of those:
1.Melody is a very important factor. While most popular songs may be short-lived,melody is always alive.Acc to dictionary, melody is "A pleasing succession or arrangement of sounds.".
2.Time of song creation . In olden days, lyrics were the foremost criteria in judging how good a song is. Now,with so many new instruments, music was never this important as now€€the lyrics factor decreased drastically.People now look for fresh, upbeat music with little/less concern for lyrics. This may change again in the future.
3.Novelty.Any song which oozes novelty and something which is innovative has always been given a special consideration by the audience.
4.Word of mouth. This is the main advertising vehicle as far as songs are concerned. We don€™t see a lot of commercials but a mere word of mouth wherein ppl pass on a message that a particular song is good. For eg: last week we went to a grocery store where some foot-tapping number was being played. We immediately inquired the shop-owner abt the songs€.He said they were from Partner€€Bahut log pooch rahe hain€ 😊 😊 .We immediately bought that CD.
Conclusion: This reflects in a net increase in sales of the same. These net sales are very good indicators indeed.
5. Folk songs always take a very special place in the genre of songs€..ofcourse they are very ethnic-based. Nowadays we have a lot of folk songs mixed up with upbeat music so that people from any ethnic background are able to enjoy their flavor. A difficult task for the creators, yet the audience enjoys it.Good that they are being popularized some way or other.

And I can write ceaselessly€€but will give a break now. Will come up again if I have something new to offer.

good music cant be defined guys....
as beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.. i feel that music lies in the ears of the listener.. šŸ˜›
hi/her taste is wat matters.. waise any genre can be good in its own part...it has a seperate appeal..
personally apeaking.... imm a singer so ill try to look at the finer details of the song.. i mean the sur ..sargam.. n notes .. were they different.. was it sung in the best possible way or not..
but taking into consideration the larger perspective.... any music is good if it suits wat ur ears wanna listen to...
simple example - HR ke songs are a rage with .. many ppl.. but many dont even bother to play them ..sunna to door ki baat
altaf raja- many say that bakwaas songs hote hai ..rone dhone wale.. but just for reminder.. tum to thehre pardesi was the largest selling album....
