Bachchan family meets cancer patients

Hyderabad, July 28: The whole Bachchan family was at the Kamineni Hospital to lend support to the cancer patients.

The Superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, along with son Abhishek and daughter in-law Aishwarya came to meet cancer patients at the hospital where they were shooting for Ram Gopal Varma's sequel to 'Sarkar'.

"I don't smoke, nor do I chew tobacco. Globally, I am told cancer-affected patients by the year 2020 would number about 20 million, with 70 per cent of them from the developing world," he said.

"At this impromptu get-together, let us talk about the fight. I am here only for the film but when the hospital management sent word, asking if I could speak against cancer, I saw no reason why I should not," he said.

The star family reeled out statistics aimed at giving the audience an idea of the damage that cancer was wreaking.

Big B was welcomed with a bouquet by a six year-old girl treated for cancer of the lymph node.

Awh..how sweet of them!!

Abhishek Bachchan's fitness secrets - He hates the gym!
Posted on Thursday, July 26, 2007 (EST)
The only problem Abhishek has with building biceps and abs like hunks Hrithik and John, both of whom he admires, is that he will need to spend long hours in the gym and that is not what he wishes to do. He prefers eating out to sweating out.

26 July 2007 (Sawf News) - The only problem Abhishek has with building biceps and abs like hunks Hrithik and John, both of whom he admires, is that he will need to spend long hours in the gym and that is not what he wishes to do. He prefers eating out to sweating out.

For decades Bollywood films relied on a tiresome mix of romance, drama, comedy and action to draw largely rural audiences to the theaters. These days, however, box office returns are predicated by a film's performance in multiplexes, which are frequented by viewers brought up on Hollywood action films.

Not surprisingly, Bollywood filmmakers are increasingly relying on the action genre to ensure box office success and prefer hunks to a chocolate cream hero.

Abhishek, who sees the writing on the wall and is set to appear in two action film – Drona and Mission Istanbul, knows he needs to hit the gym regularly.

"Earlier, it wasn't a must for an actor to have a 6-pack abs but now it is. We need to look visually presentable," he told TOI

"I'm the only actor who has been able to maintain a one-pack for eight years," he added jokingly.

Speaking about his current fitness state he says, "I like to fool myself that I workout. But I do cardio and weights as and when I am required to. At present I'm suffering in the gym," he says with self deprecating humor.

"I really need to be pushed to work out."

Abhishek prefers roles like the one he did in Guru, that required him to put on 11 kilos.

"I enjoyed putting on those many kilos but didn't know that it would be so difficult to lose all that weight."

Fortunately for Abhishek he need not leave his house to seek inspiration for his workout because dad Amitabh is as much into it as John and Salman.

"Forget about the younger actors, my dad is one great example of a fitness freak. He hits the gym everyday from 5.30 am to 8 am. He is so fit. I wish I could be like him," Abhishek says.

'Amitabh is not the right choice as Gabbar'
Sapana Patil Poojary
Friday, July 27, 2007 21:37 IST

Film writer Salim Khan's contribution to Hindi cinema has been incomparable. Paired with writer Javed Akhtar, the duo as Salim-Javed has delivered some of the biggest hits till date including 'Don' and 'Sholay'.

Their films were such a rage that even the new breed of film-makers hasn't been able to resist the idea of remaking them.

While Salim awaits the release of the remake of 'Sholay', he shares his views on 'originality' and the trend that has gripped the clichd and idea-deficient Bollywood - remaking films.

He says, "Remaking and rehashing has been done for years. We never claimed that 'Sholay' was an original movie. I am not saying we have copied it. But it had many influences.

One sees films and reads books and gets ideas. As a writer, I have tried to give it something that will add to its value. We do make films on other films and books. Sometimes we take a few scenes; sometimes the full film."

Interestingly, Salim says even he has never been original. "Everything is influenced by something or the other. I am not original either; several influences have worked on me to make me," he says.

But there is something else too that Salim feels strongly about - the new face of 'Sholay'. He says, "One is killing its vastness by bringing the story into the city.

Secondly, Amitabh Bachchan as Gabbar is not the right choice as he has a positive image. I can respect Ram Gopal Varma's point of view if people accept Amitabh as Gabbar and prove me wrong." Salim adds that he sees Ajay Devgan as the ideal choice for the role as 'he has developed into a fine actor."

Once a very busy man, these days Salim is not writing any films. "I need three months of isolation and concentration to write a script'.

Since Salim is sure he is going to see the remake, he says, "Comparison with the first version is inevitable. I felt the same when I went to see the new 'Don'. But, I personally feel that the remake of 'Sholay' doesn't deserve the hype it is getting."

Abhishek Bachchan's fitness secrets

Guest Editor Abhishek Bachchan on how he keeps his body and soul in shape. For the body, he works out and for the soul, he remains positive and happy.

Exercising and keeping oneself fit can be quite a daunting task. And for a self-confessed foodie like actor Abhishek Bachchan, it surely is one. "I love junk food. I love eating frankies at a store in front of my house in Bandra," he says.

And what about burning the calories after consuming the carbs? "I like to fool myself that I workout. But I do cardio and weights as and when I am required to. At present I'm suffering in the gym," he humours, making a face. "I really need to be pushed to work out."

But the actor agrees that in his field it's a must to look fit and presentable. "Earlier, it wasn't a must for an actor to have a 6-pack ab but now it is. We need to look visually presentable," he says and adds laughingly, "I'm the only actor who has been able to maintain a one-pack for eight years."

Abhishek recollects how during the making of Guru he was asked to put on 11 kilos to suit the character he was playing. "I enjoyed putting on those many kilos but didn't know that it would be so difficult to lose all that weight."

Although not a fitness freak, he hopes that one day he will get inspired to hit the gym religiously.

And what does he have to say about actors like John Abraham, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan who are praised for their physique? "Oh I really appreciate them and the way they maintain themselves. Look at John and even Duggu (Hrithik), he works out everyday. Even if he has been working till 10 in the night, he sees to it that he takes time out to workout. I also admire Shah Rukh and now I heard that even Aamir Khan is toning his muscles. Salman Khan too has such a fab body."

Closer home he admires his dad Amitabh Bachchan. "Forget about the younger actors, my dad is one great example of a fitness freak. He hits the gym everyday from 5.30 am to 8 am. He is so fit. I wish I could be like him."

So, does Abhishek have a personal trainer? "No I don't. But my father has one and so I piggy-back on him. But it's a good idea, I think I need to hire a personal trainer."

Well, that's what the actor does for his body but what about his soul? "Nobody can tell you how to keep the soul fit. You just need to remain positive and happy."
