'I almost said no to Chak De..' There seems to be something about Bangalore girls and Shah Rukh Khan. Deepika Padukone's making her Bollywood debut in Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om opposite SRK, and so is Anaitha Nair, who's part of the all-girl hockey team that the Badshaah coaches in Chak De India .And now there's Arya Menon, another one of the girls in the Chak De ... squad. When asked whether what we're hearing from other young stars about Shah Rukh is true - that he's the most secure actor in B- town and is great with new kids on the block in Bollywood - Arya is quick to affirm this."Oh yeah! He's awesome with newcomers. He gave us all useful tips and pointers and was very sweet. We'd all get hugs and he made us feel very at home," she says.Arya adds that SRK is very observant of all the actors' comfort levels on the sets."If we felt uncomfortable, he'd notice it, even if he was a kilometre away. He's got a good eye for that sort of thing. He made the effort of putting us at ease even if he wasn't in the frame. I'm told a lot of big stars don't do that."
But it wasn't all about hob-nobbing with SRK. Since they were working on a sports film, the girls had to train really hard before filming started."We'd get up at 5 am and train for six-seven hours," recalls Arya. And because all the girls were newcomers, they had to attend acting workshops and Hindi classes.
"The Hindi classes were for people like me whose Hindi wasn't too good," she says.
And to think that Arya almost never went to try out for the part."I got a message on my phone saying there were auditions being held for a sports movie. I wasn't interested, but I kept telling all my classmates to go," she says. It was only after the assistant director, who came to Bangalore for the auditions, persuaded Arya to try out for the part that she went."I thought, 'What the heck?' and went ahead. I even forgot about it until I found out that I got the part. It was a total surprise," she laughs.
And even though her father, Anil Menon, was a producer, it didn't earn her any brownie points during the audition."He stopped producing films five or six years ago anyway," she says, "so that didn't have anything to do with my decision to try out for the movie. I got some offers for south films before Chak De ..., but I'm a Mass Communication student and thought I'd do something more behind-the-scenes."But now she says she sees things differently and is seriously considering taking up some offers.
Will she do what other Bangalore girls have done - fly off to Mumbai because there are better opportunities? "People have told me to move there full-time because I'll get better opportunities, but I'm not sure yet. This is all still pretty new to me," she says.
YRF and UTV clash at the box office? If the release dates stick to the plan, the much awaited battle of two supreme production houses may eventually be a reality.
Yes, August 10 could be the date when films coming from Yash Raj Films and UTV could be clashing at the box office. These are CHAK DE INDIA and THE BLUE UMBRELLA.
While the date for CHAK DE INDIA has been finalized way in advance (as is the trend with all YRF films now), one still awaits confirmation on the final release date for THE BLUE UMBRELLA.
Incidentally both the films are different like chalk and cheese when it comes to scale, grandeur and set up. While CHAK DE INDIA is of course going to be all hyped up due to coming together of YRF and Shahrukh Khan, THE BLUE UMBRELLA is a long-time-ready-for-release flick by Vishal Bhardwaj which has Pankaj Kapoor as the only notable face.
Now one waits to see if this clash ultimately turns out to be a reality.
