Hi everyone. I had written this story a while back. It is a short story based on the movie "Vivah" but adapted to KYPH characters. Here, the guy falls in love with the girl's sister instead of the girl who his parents have selected for him. I hope u all like it

PART 1:

This story is a story based on two of our favorite families: the Sharma's and the Khanna's

THE SHARMA FAMILY:

Suryabhan Sharma and Gayatri are a middle class couple who live in suburbs of Mumbai. Suryabhan is a manager in a local garments factory and Gayatri is a homemaker. They have one daughter, Mishti Sharma and also have a niece, Kripa, who lives with them since she was 5 years old. Kripa was Gayatri's sister's daughter but came to live with her mausi and mausa after her parent's tragic death. Mishti is now 24 years old and Kripa is 21. They have grown up as sisters but have totally different personalities. Mishti is a "go-getter", she has always excelled in whatever she does. She was always an "A+" student, studied in the most prestigious boarding school of India and is now working at a Multinational company in a managing role. She is on fast track to becoming a senior member of her team. She is a hard worker and a "perfectionist". She is very elegant and a charming person. The word "impossible" or "defeat" does not exist in her dictionary. She can do anything to achieve her goals…….anything!!

Kripa is a sweet little petite girl, who has never met a stranger in her life. She is very chirpy, helpful and always has a smile on her face. She can be a little dreamy; she thinks and acts with her heart most of the time. She is closest to her mausi and shares her inner most thoughts with her. She is in awe of Mishti and her achievements and will do anything to please her sister. Mishti is aware of this fact and can take Kripa for granted at times. Suryabhan is overtly biased towards his brilliant daughter. Kripa, who has an inclination towards the fine arts like singing and writing, does not meet Suryabhan's approval of a successful person. Kripa has tried her best to please him but he has at best remained an uncle to her rather than a father figure.

THE KHANNA FAMILY

The Khanna's are well off with Dilip Khanna being a successful industrialist. He has two sons, Nishant, 28 years old, the older one who is married to Kanan and Angad, 25 years old, the younger son. Nishant is just like his dad- very straightforward and honest person. They are both dedicated to their family business but are very open minded people. They are aware of their status but have respect for everyone, rich or poor. Angad, who has just returned from the US after completing his MBA from a top-notch program, is all set to join the business. He used to live a flamboyant life style till he found his niche as a business student. In high school and college, he was always surrounded by girls but recently has sobered quite a bit. Dilip Khanna was very pleased to see this change in his son and said to his wife, Naina " Lagta hai ab Angad ke liye bhi ladki dekh kete hain….he looks ready to settle down now"

"Pehle ussey tho poonch lo….kahin koyi ladki ho uski nazar mein…" she said

"You are right Naina…..you are always right…" he smiled and went to Angad's room.
Angad was busy with his laptop trying to catch up with some work. Angad had recently been hired by a prestigious consulting firm in Mumbai and he wanted to do his best at his new job. He would join the family business after 2-3 years of "real world experience"

"Angad…beta….hum soch rahey the…ki tumhari shaadi karwa dein…" Dilip sat down on Angad's bed

"Hmm…hmm…kya kaha aapney" Angad was busy crunching some numbers on his spreadsheet.

"Well…beta…if you have any girlfriends….tho bataa do…warna ek achcha rishta aaya hai…" Dilip was direct and did not waste anytime.

Angad stopped what he was doing, " Dad…jaisa aap theek samjhey….maine ab ladkiyon ko date karna chhod diya hai….koyi dhang ki ladki nahin milti….may be arranged marriage is the way to go…just like bhaiyya and you…" Angad smiled and resumed his work.

SHARMA's RESIDENCE

Mishti and Kripa are going over several bio-datas and photographs of several prospective grooms.

"Hmm…Kripa…yeh dekho…Naa….too chiknaa!…" Mishti showed a photo to Kripa and they both started laughing.

"Didi…yeh dekho…." Kripa handed her a biodata and a photograph

"Hmm…dekhney mein tho theek thaak hai…parr qualification…zero….mujhsey kabhi zyaada nahin kamaa paayega….and you know…I need someone I can look upto…." Mishti rejected another one.

"Didi….shaadi ussi sey karni chahiye jissey aap apna dil de baithe…..dimaag sey tho aur kaam hothe hain…" Kripa said as she was surveying the different photos.

"Kripa…..main tumhari tarah nahin hoon…..I use my brain and logic in every decision I make……" Mishti replied.

'KRIPA!!" Gayatri called for Kripa to help her in the kitchen. Kripa was always willing to help out with chores at home. Mishti always had an excuse- earlier it used to be studies and now work. Suryabhan discouraged Mishti from "wasting" her time in household chores, "naukar kiss liye hain….meri beti tho jahan jaayegi raaj karegi…."

Mishti liked the next "proposal"- it was Angad Khanna's- " dekhney mein bhi achcha hai…aur A1 qualifications….looks like CEO material….I think he will be a suitable groom…."

Mishti informed her parents and the Sharma's and Khanna's decided to set up a meeting at the Sharma's for the boy and girl to meet. Kripa had not seen the photo and was unaware of the boy's name too.

Next day, everyone at the Sharma's residence was ready to welcome the Khanna's. They were aware of the Khanna's stature in society and they made sure they went out of their way to do "khatirdaari".

Kripa was ready in a pretty pink churidaar and hanging out in the balcony to get a glimpse of her future "jijajee". She spotted a little bird in their front yard-she looked like she was injured and trying her best to fly. Kripa, tender hearted that she was, went downstairs to the bird's rescue. She picked up the injured bird with both her hands and walked towards the house, holding and talking gently to the bird. She did not notice that the Khanna's- Dilip, Naina, Nishant, Kanan and Angad were also approaching the house. She kept walking and accidently bumped into a tall figure……they both bumped hard into each other as the tall 6 foot figure, Angad was also not aware of her coming in…..Angad fell down with Kripa on top of him; the bird slipped out of her hand…..their eyes met and they were locked in that position for a few minutes till Nishant rescued the bird and helped Kripa get up on her feet. Kripa felt embarrassed and did not realize what had happened. She ran inside the house while her mausi and mausa ji welcomed their guests. Kripa shut the door to her room and ran the events of the past 10 minutes in her mind… "wo kaun tha…..Angad Khanna???…..I don't believe it…" her face turned red as she remembered her school days…..specially that one special moment ……she could never forget that one moment which changed her life forever…..

PART 2:

Kripa's heart was still pounding as she recalled her high school days, when Mishti knocked on her door, "KRIPA! Chalo mere saath neechey chalo…."

Kripa opened the door and saw Mishti standing outside wearing a green saree. Kripa forgot her tension and gave Mishti a big smile and hugged her, "Didi…you look so beautiful…."

"Thanks Kripa…..aaj mama ke kehney parr saree pahen lee hai….but I don't think I can carry it for too long…..it is so uncomfortable!" Mishti said

"Oh…didi…you look so pretty…chalo let's go down" Kripa put her arm around Mishti as the walked downstairs.

Angad looked up and saw Mishti being accompanied by the same girl who had bumped into him just a few minutes ago. The girl looked really familiar and he kept staring at her rather than Mishti, "isse kahan dekha hai?….she looks so familiar…."

Angad's thoughts were soon interrupted by his family members and Suryabhan, "beta….US mein kaun sey shahar mein the aap?" Angad got involved in small talk with the rest of the family as he saw Kripa leave for the kitchen. His thoughts were still trying to figure out where he had seen Mishti's sister?

Kripa soon came back with a servant and served everyone tea and snacks. When she came close to Angad, her face got flushed again and she offered him the tea without trying to have any eye contact with him. Angad, however, stared at her face trying to recognize her.

Kripa found a comfortable corner next to Kanan. Kanan seemed like a friendly person; Kripa became her natural chirpy self as she chatted with her. Angad and Mishti found a lot of common things to talk about, mainly related to the world of business and the stock market.

Gayatri was very pleased with Angad. He seemed to have his head over his shoulders and was extremely respectful to everyone. She did however notice that every so often Angad would glance at Kripa with the corner of his eyes. She smiled to herself, as she was aware that her niece was definitely the prettier of the two girls, even though her husband and daughter thought otherwise.

Gayatri finally said, "Arre…Mishti…beta tum aur Angad chaho to oopar terrace parr jaakar batein karr sakthey ho….hum logon ke beech saari batein nahin karr paaogey.."

Naina agreed, "bilkul theek kaha aapney Mrs Sharma…jaao Angad beta….aap log jaao"

Angad and Mishti went upstairs. Kripa got up to clear the coffee table and saw them walking upstairs. She was happy for Mishti as she knew Angad was a very bright person; he was the Head boy at their school and equally good at academics, sports and theater….she remembered all those practices they had for their annual day school play….she was in 9th grade and he was in 12th…..she was the lead singer and he was the main actor on the play….and then one day something happened…..her heart started pounding again but was soon rescued by Gayatri's voice, "Beta…Kripa…fridge mein sey mithai ley aana….ho sakegaa tho aaj hi rokni karr lengey.."

"Achcha mausi….." Kripa obeyed.

When Angad and Mishti came back downstairs, they found Nishant and Kripa busy talking to Kripa.

"OH…St Joseph?…..Main aur Angad bhi wahin ke padhey hain….tum tho bachchi hogi jab maine high school khatam kiya tha…." Nishant smiled at Kripa

Kanan joked, "No Nishant….tum tho paida bhi nahin huye hogey…." They all laughed.

"Oh…tho aap sab ek hi school sey hain…..main tho Dehradun mein boarding mein thi….I think mama-papa always wanted me to have the best education…." Mishti said proudly.

Suryabhan also joined them, "Mishti has always been at the top of her class, whether school or college…..she is the best…aap logon ko itni bright bahu kahin nahin mileygi…." He was beaming at his daughter's achievements.

"Papa….aap bhi …." Mishti hugged her father.

Angad was still lost in his thoughts but when he heard his school's name, "Oh….now it makes sense….so you were also at St Joseph's….you are Kripa Sharma?….the singer of our school…" he was standing in front of Kripa.

Kripa lowered her eyes and was not sure what else Angad remembered.

Kanan joined them, "Kripa…phir tho ek gaana sunaana padhega…after all tumhari bahen ki shaadi ki baat ho rahi hai…"

Gayatri placed her hand on Kripa's back and reassured her, "gaa do beti….Mishti ke liye hi sahi…"

Everyone sat down to listen to Kripa. Kripa looked at Mishti, "yeh gaana ek puraana gaana hai. Meri didi ke liye aaj bahut sunhara din hai….yeh gaana unkey liye…"

"aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai" from "guide"

Angad was mesmerized by her voice. She had definitely come a long way since her school days…she was always a good singer but her voice had really matured now and it sounded really melodious. He got up and congratulated Kripa, "Kripa…..this was a perfect song for your sister….you are really a good singer." Kripa thanked him softly and walked away to the kitchen. Angad's eyes followed her till Naina interrupted, "ab hum chaltey hain…"

The families then decided to go ahead with the "roka" ceremony which is kind of a commitment to the marriage before any formal engagement.

After everyone left, Kripa and Mishti went upstairs. Kripa asked, "Didi…tho pasand aaya aapko?" she had a naughty smile on her face.

"Kripa….naa pasand aaney waali kya baat thi…he is well educated, well respected and an intelligent man….I think we have so much in common…hum kabhi ek doosre sey bore nahin hongey…." Mishti smiled and wished Kripa a goodnight.

Kripa felt a pang of disappointment; she felt guilty, as she ought to be happy for her sister. She went back to her room and remembered that evening….

FLASHBACK:

All the students were returning from the school auditorium in the evening after a long practice for their annual day play. Kripa was in a hurry to leave as Suryabhan, who was waiting to pick her up outside, would get upset if she was late. As she was walking, a hand rested on her shoulder, "Hey…Kripa….you were great today.." She turned around and saw Angad. Kripa was in awe of Angad in high school. He was so good looking and so talented….all the girls tried to get his attention. Kripa would also steal glances at him during their practices.

Angad was standing very close to her. She could smell the chewing gum in his breathe.
"Kripa….you are a good girl….do you like me?" he had a naughty look on his face as he was aware of his affect on girls.

"A…A..Angad…I am sorry….mere uncle bahar wait karr rahe hain…." She hesitated and was scared to death at his question.

She looked up and saw his face inches away from hers, he came closer and kissed her lips and then said, "Now…decide whether you like me or not…" he smiled mischievously and left her standing there frozen in a state of shock…

Angad never gave her any more attention once the play was over. He soon graduated and she never saw him again till today….

That kiss had changed her life forever…she could still taste his lips to this day…

PRESENT:

Kripa had goosebumps just thinking about that evening. Why was she not able to forget that kiss yet?….he was soon going to be her brother-in-law…..she had to suppress those thoughts forever!!! She closed her eyes and tried to sleep.

ANGAD's BEDROOM:

Angad lay in bed thinking about the evening. He had dated so many girls in his life but no one had ever stirred his heart yet. Mishti was also one of them…he enjoyed talking to her…just like he would a business acquaintance or a colleague at work…..was she the right life partner he was looking for? May be with time, he would learn to love her just like his father and brother loved their wives now….

He started whistling the "guide" song which Kripa had sung and started smiling as he remembered the "bump and fall" with Kripa from earlier in the evening. He was very perceptive about women and judging by her reactions to his presence, he wondered if there was anything between them in high school…..and dozed off smiling….

PART 3:

NEXT MORNING AT THE KHANNA HOUSEHOLD:

The Khanna's were having breakfast before leaving for work.
Dilip was pouring his tea, "Tho Angad beta…what do you think?…..would you be happy with Mishti?"

Angad just shrugged his shoulders, "It is too early to say dad…"

"Kyon? Ussmey koyi aisi baat hai jo pasand nahin aayi…I think she is beautiful, charming, very well educated….and ambitious girl….hamare parivar ke liye bilkul theek hai…" Dilip was chewing on his toast. The Khanna's were certainly a high achieving family. Their older "bahu" Kanan was also a Phd and a lecturer at a prestigious college. Naina herself was a retired professor in English literature. In fact, Mishti's qualifications were a big attraction for Dilip and Naina as they both valued education over anything else.

Angad kept quiet and then said, "Mom…dad…jaisa aap theek samjhey….aap tho jaante hain college aur school mein maine kayi ladkiyon ko date kiya tha…parr obviously nothing worked….arranged marriage is probably the way to go…" Dilip and Naina had always had a very open relationship with their sons and respected their choices in life, whether it was their love life or career….

Nishant looked at Kanan and smiled, "Angad…trust me….mom dad know the best….kyon Kanan?" he winked at her as Kanan blushed and got up to get her purse as she was getting late for work. "Nishant….tum bhi….let's go now….I will get late for my class…." Nishant, an obedient husband that he was got up without finishing his breakfast, "OK…everyone…see you in the evening" he kissed Naina and picked up his briefcase.

"OH…before you leave Nishant….Mr Sharma ka phone aaya tha….he wants all of us to spend the weekend with their family at their Khandala home….are you and Kanan free?" Dilip asked.

"Sure dad….we would love to come…." Nishant spoke as he left

"I think that would be a good way for both families to get to know each other…." Dilip looked at Angad

"Whatever dad….I am free"

WEEKEND:

The Sharma's had reached their home in Khandala early on Saturday morning and were anxiously waiting for the Khanna's to arrive. Angad was enjoying the natural beauty and greenery from the backseat of the family car on their way to the Sharma's. He took out his binoculars to survey the surroundings. As they were approaching the Sharma residence, Angad focused on their house to get a good look. He spotted Kripa and Mishti on the first floor terrace. His binoculars froze at the sight of Kripa…..Kripa was smiling and watering the plants….she looked so young and innocent in her white salwaar kameez….Angad then looked around to see Mishti busy on a phone call…she was engaged in a serious phone call and had a big frown on her face…..Angad moved his binoculars back to Kripa's serene face and followed her around the terrace…. "iss ladki mein aisi kya baat hai…..main nazrein kyon nahin hataa paata?" Angad asked himself.

They finally arrived and were greeted by Gayatri and Suryabhan at the door. Mishti also came outside and greeted all of them. She looked happy to see Angad…. "Aao..Angad….main tumhein tumhara room dikha doon…."

"Wo beti….abhi Hariram ney uss kamrey ki poori safaayi nahin ki hai….abhi Kripa key room mein samaan rakh do….tumhara kamra bhi abhi saaf nahin hai…." Gayatri said.

Mishti guided Angad with his bag but her cell phone went off again… "Oh..Angad I need to take this call…mere office mein ek important project chal raha hai….I will be there with you….Kripa is in the kitchen….she will show you…" Mishti went to another room to take the call.

Kripa came out of the kitchen and saw Angad standing with his bag. She smiled at him, "Main aapko oopar ley chalti hoon…" She was not as nervous to see him today as she had prepped herself to treat Angad as her "jijajee" only.

Angad followed her up the stairs as Kripa opened the door to her room… "Aap abhi samaan yahin rakh deejiye….aapka room thodi der mein ready ho jaayega…"

"Can I freshen up here also?" he asked as he kept his bag down

"Sure…main neechey jaathi hoon" she turned around to leave. There was a breeze blowing through the open window….her dupatta flew gently with the breeze and caressed his cheek as she was leaving. Angad could smell her fragrance in the dupatta; he tried to touch it but she was gone before he realized it. He smiled and turned around to use the washroom. He looked around at her room. There were a lot of old pictures on the wall….some from school also….there was one with Kripa and a trophy that she had won for a singing contest…..he thought she looked so cute in her pigtails in some of her childhood pictures. He glanced down at the bookshelf and saw 'St Joseph's year book"

He could not resist himself and picked the year book. The year book was from the year Kripa must have graduated from high school….he saw her pictures and then saw a group photo from the annual day play, he had participated in also. He looked closely and saw that someone had drawn a heart around his face and an identical one around Kripa's face. He tried to remember if anything had happened between them but could not recall. He smiled as he closed the book; as he was going to put it back in the shelf, a folded note fell out from the book. He picked it up to replace it inside the book, but got tempted and unfolded it.

He was surprised to read the few lines in the note, "mere school ki sabsey khubsoorat yaad wo hai jo aaj tak maine kissi sey share nahin ki….wo pehla kiss jo aaj tak mere honthon parr mehsoos hotha hai….kaash wo mujhey phir mil jaaye….ussey graduate huye kitney saal ho gaye…na jaane wo kahan hoga…..ussey tho yaad bhi nahin hoga….parr main kabhi nahin bhool payi…..uss kiss ko aur…Angad ko….."

Angad suddenly recalled how he used to love scaring innocent girls by his bold gestures…like hugging them when no one was looking or planting a kiss on their cheeks to surprise them….and yes he remembered how he had kissed one girl on her lips once….that was the boldest thing he ever did but did not try that again in school as he thought he might get into trouble one day…..what made him do that to Kripa….he still did not remember…..but he had the sudden urge to be with her at that moment…

After freshening up, he went down and saw Kripa in the kitchen. She was mixing something in a bowl; both her hands with smeared with butter and flour. The kitchen phone rang, "Uffo….yeh phone bhi naa….Hariram zara phone uthaana…." She looked around for someone to receive the call but there was no one else around. Angad went in and picked up the phone and held it close to her ear.

She nodded in thanks and started talking to someone. As she hung up, she realized Angad was inches away from her, his fingers still holding the phone but touching the skin of her face, she could feel his warm breathe on her face….she turned red and pulled herself away, "Thanks…wo mere haath cake batter mein the…" she lowered her eyes and started mixing the batter again.

Angad just stood there and looked at her, "cake batter?…hmm that is my favorite part …..I have not had that in a while….." He grabbed her hand by her wrist and pulled it close to him; he then licked her fingers off the batter, "indeed it is my favorite part…." He winked at her and turned around to leave, wiping his lips…..

Kripa was stunned and stood there frozen, unable to comprehend what Angad just did to her….
