Chak De India promo song rocks

Before Jhoom Barabar Jhoom begins, a specially shot promo song of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Chak De India, is shown in cinema halls. This Shimin Amin (Ab Tak Chappan) directed Yash Raj film has a hockey theme and the promotional song, partly sung by King Khan himself, is getting great response from the audience.

SRK plays a hockey coach of a ladies team and in the music video he is shown introducing 13 of his team gals one at a time. His introduction of them is intercepted by dialogues from each one of them about what they are and what they mean. Shot in a black and dingy hockey team dressing room, the song packs a punch with its no-nonsense attitude thrown in good measure and innovative editing style.

The hockey team is shown preparing for the World Cup and has girls (mostly newcomers) who come from various parts of India. The captain of the team, played by model turned actress, Vidya Malavade, is introduced as a house wife who is balancing her sports career with her family. Also introduced from the team are two girls from the North East, a dare devil sardarni, a champion with a weak heart, a bindaas babe who likes being naughty amongst others. As SRK finishes introducing all the girls, calling each one as Chak 2…Chak 3 and so on till Chak 13, the girls together at the end introduce him as Chak 1 – Kabir Khan their coach.

The brainchild of Aditya Chopra, this is the first time a Bollywood film's first promo is shot like a music video and shown in full length before the television promos are aired. The film is set for an August 10 release and is scheduled for a grand premiere in London on August 9th.

SRK introduces each girl from his 16-member hockey team of 'Chak De India' and the team intermittently warns "Ek hockey dungi rakhke!"

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 18, 2007 - 10:06 IST

After releasing a snippet of a promo, Yash Raj Films have come up with a full-fledged music video of Chak De! India. The video has Shah Rukh Khan who plays Kabir Khan, the coach of a women hockey team, and his team of 14 ambitious girls.

The video is an extension of the initially released promo which introduces the theme of the film. The video has Shah Rukh introduce and describe briefly each and every player. What gave vibes of a clumsy rap in the promo is however continued with panache by Shah Rukh thanks to the rap seeming a suitable way of introducing the girls.

Chak 2, Chak 3 goes Kabir Khan numbering each of his players he is introducing with a short description. Comes first – Priti Sabarwal – born in the UK. Then is Komal Chautala who is the fastest dribbler of the team. Bindiya Naik is one of the senior members of the team and is stubborn.

Chak 5. Vidya Sharma. She is the captain and goalkeeper of the team. She is also a housewife adept in handling both the roles of her life. This role is essayed by the only known face in the team – Vidya Malvade. Then comes Balbir Kaur who is the "Kumbhakaran" of the team. She sleeps a lot but when awake she can make mincemeat out of everybody.

Naughty Aliya Bose and the dominating Gunjan Lakhani are the senior members of the team. Rani is the queen of the backfield, Suimui unlike her name is quite sensible and then there is Andhra's Nethra Reddy and Gul Iqbal There are two north Indians – Molly and Mary – who normally keep to themselves and yet are the life of the team. Only fourteen players are described though there are two more in the team. After Shah Rukh speaks about a particular person, that person says something about herself with a killing attitude and intermittently the team warns "Ek hockey dungi rakhke!"

Thus introduces Shah Rukh 'Kabir' Khan his players and they oblige in the end by introducing their courageous and go-getting coach and by saying that it is their story of triumph and endeavor.

The video is simple and doesn't try anything out of the box for the concept of introducing the girls. The girls are good-looking, well-built and worth the deep search undertaken to find them. The girls are seen clad in smart blue uniforms. The music is a winner. It definitely has the spirit and attitude which is a reflection of the film. Shah Rukh's voice fits in the song and has the passion while introducing the girls. He is suave and looks promising for the role of a coach.

The video is not likely to be aired on television soon. It already is being screened in cinema theatres. Overseas consumers can purchase in the digital format from the producer's website. With the hype and hope surrounding the film, the video speaks volumes about what can be expected from the film. To sum it up, a sample is a representative of the whole. So only time will tell if the video stands true to its promise.

No issues: Alvira Khan

Yash Raj Films seems to have bid adieu to stock favourite names Raj, Rahul and Simran.

Now, the production house has begun picking up character names from within the film fraternity.

For example, Preity Zinta is called Alvira Khan (also the name of Salman Khan's sister) in the recently released Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, while SRK is called Kabir Khan (also the name of Kabul Express's director) in the upcoming film Chak De.

No problemo

Alvira Khan is not aware she has a namesake in JBJ. She says, "I haven't seen the film, but it's not like I have an issue with it," she says.

It's cool: Kabir Khan

On the other hand, Kabir Khan says he was aware Shah Rukh Khan would be called Kabir Khan in Chak De. "I'm associated with Yash Raj, so I know. I couldn't help smiling when I first learnt about it. It's a thrill, no doubt, though a childish one!" he quips.

Kabir says that most character names are picked from one's filmmakers/ writers meet in their everyday lives. "One tends to use names one knows and likes.

Like my brother-in-law Vijay Ganesh Acharya (who is directing his debut film for Yash Raj, called Tashan), who called John Abraham's character in Dhoom as Kabir," he adds.

Would he be perturbed if his name were used for a negative character? "It wouldn't be me if even a rapist or murderer was called Kabir Khan. There are many people with such a name in this world!" says Kabir.

Alvira laughs, "I don't have a copyright on my name!"

Neetu Chandra misses being SRK's gal

Losing Out: Neetu Chandra

If all had gone well, Garam Masala actress Neetu Chandra would have starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Raj Films' upcoming venture, Chak De.

Neetu was the first choice for the role, but later Yash Raj Films and director Shimit Amin decided to cast Vidya Malavade.

Plot lost

The film sees Shah Rukh playing an ageing hockey coach who takes a motley group of girls to the pinnacle of world hockey.

Neetu was supposed to essay the role of a Sikh girl who is keen to join the hockey team but does not get the approval of her parents.

Says a source from Yash Raj, "Neetu met Shimit a couple of times and everything seemed to be going well. Suddenly, one day she was told that she was being replaced by Vidya."

When contacted, Neetu admits that she had auditioned for Chak De and Shimit was considering her for the role. "But after the release of Traffic Signal, the makers felt that I deserved a bigger role. There are eleven girls in the film and every girl has almost an equal role," she says.

Bright gal

Neetu says she understands Shimit's need for a fresh face. "Shimit is a great guy. He is decent and very professional. I understand his perspective and subsequent change of mind. He said he would like to work with me in the future. I look forward to it," she says.

Asked if she regrets missing the opportunity to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Neetu says, "I'm not feeling bad. I am optimistic. I've worked very hard and I'm sure there'll be a next time."

Meanwhile, Neetu has signed a three-film contract with Ashtavinayak Films. "Also, I am doing a film to be produced by Anupam Kher," she signs off.

Promos of SRK's movie pulled off theatres

Promos of Chak De, produced by Yash Chopra's production house, will be drawn from cinema halls from all over India. The movie has Shah Rukh Khan playing coach to a girls' hockey team. According to a source, "The promo is not getting a good response from the public, Yash Chopra's production house is very sensitive towards audiences responses. They have been sending teams to various cinema halls to gauge the reaction which isn't positive. Therefore they might withdraw it by this weekend."

Manoj Desai, owner of a multiplex, said, "I haven't got any official intimation from them, but I have removed the promos as the public is hooting while the eight-minute promo is played before the film. As it is Jhoom Barabar Jhoom has not met with good response. I don't want the public to run away from my theatre." Another a cinema manager said, "A team from the production house did come to our theatre for a survey to know what the people think of the promo. But we haven't been informed about the withdrawal so we are still running it. If they ask us we will take it off."

However another trade expert informs, "I don't know if they will issue an official notification, they may request exhibitors to withdraw the promos from the theatres as they don't the audience to lose interest in the film even before its release."

Fans eagerly waiting for SRK's Chak De! India and Om Shanti Om

By Deepak Kumar Mohanty
New Delhi

June 19: Bollywood Badshah Shahrukh Khan with his last release in August 2006, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, really doesn't bid goodbye. Shahrukh is back in news and this time for the buzz of his forthcoming films. Two of his most awaited films, Yash Raj's ChakDe! India and Farah Khan's OmShantiOm are set to be released sometime in the later half of this year.

Theatrical promos for Chak De! India have been released a week back. Based on the life of a hockey coach and how he took the job to coach 16 overlooked girls for this most neglected National Game of India.

This film is directed by Shimit Amin, once an assistant of Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) and the director of AbTakChhappan. It is a bit different from the earlier films under Yash Raj production as it is not a family drama. The film instead addresses the role of women through sports and focuses on one of the most ignored game of India, the National game. This is one of the new things that the story line is going to present.

Yash Raj Films have intended to premier the movie on August 9, at Somerset House in London. The premiere of Chak De! India is a part of the Film4 Summer Screen programmes that is being celebrated from a long time to mark the relationship between India and UK and the impact of Indian culture on London's life. The film will be released worldwide on Aug 10, this year.

Om Shanti Om produced by Shahrukh Khan himself and directed by Farah Khan is also ready for the release. Shahrukh Khan and ace ramp model Deepika Padukone are in the lead roles. Reportedly the story line is based on reincarnation. A large number of well known Bollywood actors have performed in the film as guest appearances including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutta, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi. With good composition coming from Vishal and Shekhar, the music of the film is expected to attract a larger audience.

After the Bachchan family drama it is time for Shahrukh Khan to rock'n'roll. The fever of SRK's fans seems rising with the releasing date coming closer. These are not the only things to put Khan in news, as last week he was in London for a charity show with painter M.F Husain. Whatever the reasons but it is good news for his fans that he is coming with two different movies that hopefully will highlight good performances.
